ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a tool that is already part of our reality, and this is an opportunity to understand how it can be useful in interacting with patients and providing valuable information about orthodontics. Objective: This study evaluated the accuracy of ChatGPT in providing accurate and quality information to answer questions on Clear aligners, Temporary anchorage devices and Digital imaging in orthodontics. Methods: forty-five questions and answers were generated by the ChatGPT 4.0, and analyzed separately by five orthodontists. The evaluators independently rated the quality of information provided on a Likert scale, in which higher scores indicated greater quality of information (1 = very poor; 2 = poor; 3 = acceptable; 4 = good; 5 = very good). The Kruskal-Wallis H test (p< 0.05) and post-hoc pairwise comparisons with the Bonferroni correction were performed. Results: From the 225 evaluations of the five different evaluators, 11 (4.9%) were considered as very poor, 4 (1.8%) as poor, and 15 (6.7%) as acceptable. The majority were considered as good [34 (15,1%)] and very good [161 (71.6%)]. Regarding evaluators' scores, a slight agreement was perceived, with Fleiss's Kappa equal to 0.004. Conclusions: ChatGPT has proven effective in providing quality answers related to clear aligners, temporary anchorage devices, and digital imaging within the context of interest of orthodontics.

ABSTRACT

Management of patients with congenitally missing mandibular second premolars continues to challenge clinicians to find the best treatment options. The Orthodontist must make the proper decision at the appropriate time regarding management of the edentulous space. If space is left for an eventual prosthetic replacement, the clinician should try to create the exact amount of space required and leave the alveolar ridge in an ideal condition for the future restoration. If the space is to be closed orthodontically, detrimental changes to the occlusion and facial profile must be prevented. Therefore, the correct decision must be made at the appropriate time. This paper presents a case report of a congenitally missing lower left second premolar where molar protraction with orthodontic temporary anchorage device has been done.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we measured the cortical bone thickness in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas using computed tomography in order to evaluate the suitability of these areas for application of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and to suggest a clinical guide for TADs. METHODS: The buccal and lingual cortical bone thickness was measured in 15 men and 15 women. Bone thickness was measured 4 mm apical to the interdental cementoenamel junction between the mandibular canine and the 2nd molar using the transaxial slices in computed tomography images. RESULTS: The cortical bone in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas was thicker in men than in women. In men, the mandibular lingual cortical bone was thicker than the buccal cortical bone, except between the 1st and 2nd molars on both sides. In women, the mandibular lingual cortical bone was thicker in all regions when compared to the buccal cortical bone. The mandibular buccal cortical bone thickness increased from the canine to the molars. The mandibular lingual cortical bone was thickest between the 1st and 2nd premolars, followed by the areas between the canine and 1st premolar, between the 2nd premolar and 1st molar, and between the 1st molar and 2nd molar. CONCLUSIONS: There is sufficient cortical bone for TAD applications in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas. This provides the basis and guidelines for the clinical use of TADs in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas.

ABSTRACT

Introduction and Objetive: Anchorage management is essential for successful fi xed orthodontic treatment; however there is no consensus about the effectiveness of skeletal anchorage for anterior teeth retraction. The aim of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of skeletal anchorage forspace closure in the maxillary arch. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed in PubMed, Cochrane, Lilacs, Scielo databases. Controlled clinical trials were included, where skeletal anchorage was used for space closure. Three reviewers examined the abstracts and full texts to determine fulfi llment of the inclusion and exclusion criteria independently in a data extraction form. Results: 324 papers, out of which 316 were excluded after the evaluation of title and abstract of the eight initially selected trials. Only three trials met the inclusion criteria.A meta-analysis was performed with a random effects method for the mesial movement of upper molars in which the temporary skeletal anchorage devices showed to be more signifi cantly moreeffective in controlling anchorage -2,7 mm (-4,10,-1,33 CI 95%) when compared to the conventionalanchorage control methods. Conclusions: Temporary skeletal anchorage seems to be more effective in controlling the movement of molars during mesial space closure, when compared to the conventional orthodontic anchorage although evidence in the literature is limited.
