ABSTRACT

Three-parent test tube baby technology is important to solve the mitochondrial genetic disease.Once available,it raises greatly ethical controversy such as breaking traditional family values, hitting the religious belief, existing unknown risks, correctly handling the failed embryo,as well as the influence on the social status of the babies.Regarding these controversy,we can discuss it from several aspects.Because the development of ethics is behind the progress of science and technology,we should affirm the value of three-parent test tube baby technology and balance the development of science and technology with respecting the religious beliefs.Strict supervision system and standard application system reflect our respect for life.Incomprehension to the unknown things should become the motivation of our inquiry. We should face up to our fear of three-parent test tube baby technology, and thus to strengthen research and deepen understanding.Based on the above argument, this paper puts forward the ethical principles that should be followed in the development of three-parent test tube baby technology, namely respect, benefit,no harm and justice.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To study the cognitive characteristics of older women about the ethical issues and stipula-tion of test-tube baby technology. Methods:A survey was undertaken with 203 female patients, who were ran-domly selected from three hospitals in Xi′an accepted test-tube baby technology. The basic characteristics and ethical cognition regarding embryos, offspring, and informed consent were included in the questionnaire. Results:Female over 40 had a statistical significant higher score on the cognition of offspring (12. 48 ± 3. 08) and informed consent (13. 27 ± 2. 31) related ethical issues comparing to other age group (P<0. 05). Age, educational status, monthly income were statistically positive related to the scores of the Ethical Cognitive Scale ( P<0 . 05 ) . Conclu-sion:Older women paid more attention to medical risks and policy rules to test-tube baby. And they had a strong aspiration to obtain a child through surrogacy. For older women with low education, low-income, the ethical cog-nition was not ideal, hospitals should pay attention to the use of modern multimedia to help patients better under-stand related ethical issues in test-tube baby.

ABSTRACT

Applying mitochondrial replacement technique to human assisted reproduction could benefit the fam-ilies with mitochondrial diseases and improve clinical outcomes of assisted reproduction in elderly patients. But it may also lead to a series of medical ethics issues such as the standardization and security of this technology, the conflict with the traditional ethical concepts, the determination of informed consent and confidentiality principles, the health development issues of the offspring, and commercial donation of eggs and so on. As for this, the relevant institutions should strictly control the indications when apply this technology, the government should formulate rele-vant laws and regulations. Simultaneously, it is important to strengthen supervision and management of social eth-ics, improve professional ethics of assisted reproductive personnel, and emphasize the correct guiding role of public opinion.

ABSTRACT

By analyzing the physiological and psychological state of the children conceived by different assisted reproduction techniques, studies confirm that the current assisted reproductive technology is safe, and there is no adverse effect on the physiological and psychological state of offspring. However, the high multiple pregnancy rate caused by assisted reproductive technology can affect the growth and psychological state of the children conceived by different assisted reproduction techniques, which is to be resolved.

ABSTRACT

Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of infertile women who terminated treatment after in vitro fertilization (IVF) failure. Methods Using a qualitative research de-sign, 12 subjects were recruited who had experienced IVF failure for many times. Data were collected through deep interviews, and analyzed using interpretive research strategies of phenomenology. Results Informed consent was obtained from each subject. There were four themes of lived experience which emerged from the data: frustration, high pressure, giving up pregnancy, and replaning the future. Conclusions Infertile women who received in vitro fertilization treatment will eventually accept the reality and mark out their future life after experiencing hustrated sense and various pressure by failure treatment.Nurses should give more loving care and persuasion during this process.

ABSTRACT

A phenomenological study was conducted to investigate the experiences of mothers pregnant via in vitro fertilization (IVF). Sample of nine mothers participated. Ten theme clusters emerged when the formulated meanings were organized into categories. During the infertility period, the participants were subject to self- depreciation, envy, anxiety, and depression. It changed their priorities in life from a job-oriented life to one where having a baby was the most important thing. After trying numerous alternative therapies, IVF became their last hope in having a baby. Since the success rate for IVF is low (only 20-30%), the participants for the treatment were overwhelmed with uncertainty, and it led to further anxiety, depression and despair. Success of pregnancy gave them extreme satisfaction, but they became very cautious in their day-to-day life because of their fear of abortion and early delivery. Some were even worried about the side effect of IVF during the pregnancy. Finally, the delivery of the baby gave them relief from the obligation of having a baby. Women did not have any difficulties in rearing a "test tube baby" except in the case of twins. Most women had no ethical difficulty in having a baby by IVF. However they did not wish this information to be revealed to other people. They again turned to IVF to have a son(s) when the resultory child(s) was a daughter(s). This is because of the strong preference for sons in Korean society.

ABSTRACT

Our first test tube baby was born about 9 years ago1 and since then we have done about 127 patients resulting in 37 babies with a multiple pregnancy rate of 40 percent. The primary major risk of IVF that it shares with ovulation induction is the unacceptable rate of multiple pregnancy which is associated with high neonatal and maternal adverse outcomes. In order to reduce this risk, this case series aims to present clinical data of our two recent successful ongoing pregnancies from sequential single embryo transfer relating to improvement of culture media and changes that make embryo transfer more efficient especially when ultrasonographically guided. It is high time that Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (PSREI) create guidelines in the practice of ART and collaborate in the submission of data to international organizations. The balance of risk and benefit is intrinsic to medical practice. Optimization of outcomes of IVF requires minimization of risk while maintaining or improving success rates. The use of single embryo transfer is a step in the right direction for ART in delivering a healthy baby.
