ABSTRACT

Testacean traditional Chinese medicine (TTCM), derived from the outer shell of sea or freshwater mollusks, is a special and important category of Chinese medicinal materials. To ensure the effective use of TTCM, a comparative identification study was performed on five commonly-used testacean drugs, including Haliotidis Concha, Arcae Concha, Meretricis Concha, Ostreae Concha and Margaritifera Concha (Shijueming, Walengzi, Geqiao, Muli and Zhenzhumu in Chinese, respectively). Typical morphological photographs of the crude drugs were acquired, and the key microscopic characteristics of the derived powders under normal light microscope and polarized light microscope were summarized. The major results can be concluded as follows: (1) the original species involved in the five TTCMs could be distinguished by their respective interspecies morphological characteristics; (2) the key identification characteristics of the five powdered crude drugs were mainly crystal fragments, with the fragment features under both normal light and polarized light microscope providing powerful points for differentiating the five commonly-used testacean drugs. This study demonstrated that it is feasible to provide authentication for these five kinds of TTCMs by the combination of morphology with microscopy.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To observe the effects of Oysters, Abalone shel , Concha arcae, Mother-of-pearl, Concha cypraeae, Clamshel , these six testacean TCM on the goiter rats. [Method] 72 healthy SD rats were randomly divided into nine groups:normal group, model group, positive group and six testacean TCM groups. Rats were given daily propylthiouracil (0.15 g·kg-1), continuous modeling for 10d, weighing thyroid wet weight, assaying T3, T4 and TSH contents in serum by ELISA, observing the morphological changes of thyroid under light microscope. [Result] Rats in the model group compared with normal group in-creased the relative weight of thyroid, reduced the content of T3,T4, and there was a significant difference( P<0.01), thyroid fol icular epithelial cellhyperplasia was obvious;compared with the model group, Oysters and Clamshel group made the content of T3,T4 in rat rebound, and there was a significant difference (P<0.05);Oyster and Clamshel group’s thyroid fol icular cellhyperplasia were not obvious, while the hyperplasia had different levels for the other 4 kinds of testacean TCM. [Conclusion] Oysters and Clamshel were better to improve the thyroid function of the goiter model rats.

ABSTRACT

An evaluation was made of the effect of temporal variations on an assembly of Testaceae in several water bodies located in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. A sampling point was selected at each study site, where 4 samplings were collected per season, considering the climatic conditions of the dry and rainy periods. The findings revealed 80 infrageneric taxa, 05 families and 12 genera. Pearson's correlation between the second axis of the DCA and the first axis of the PCA was significant, even after applying Bonferroni's correction for multiple significance tests (r = 0.683; p = 0.014). Thus, the temporal variation of the limnological data, which showed higher values of turbidity, total solids, color and temperature for the rainy period and higher concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus during the dry season, was significantly correlated with the biotic data. The second axis of the PCA indicated that the variables remained unchanged during the seasonal periods under study.
