ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the discriminatory capacity of tester lines for tropical corn lines converted to supersweet shrunken (sh2) gene, for the development of hybrids adapted to tropical conditions. Lines were used as female parents in crosses with three testers: open-pollinated mixed variety; supersweet line L4; supersweet commercial hybrid Tropical Plus. Four trials were carried out to evaluate topcrosses in Maringá - PR e Sabáudia - PR, Brazil in the main growing season of 2015/16. The following traits were evaluated: total ear weight (TEW, in kg), commercial ear weight (CEW, in kg) and total soluble solids (TSS, in °Brix). The GCA estimates for TEW and CEW were highest for L4. The lines Balu-114 and UEM-25 were selected based on the effects of g ̂ ifor the traits studied and should be used in the establishment of base populations for the breeding of superior lines. The s ̂ ijvalue for TEW was highest for cross BALU-182 x Tropical, while for CEW was the highest value for cross BALU-94 x Mista.

ABSTRACT

A new device was designed to measure adhesive force and predict whether traditional Chinese medicine extracts would appear hot-melt sticking in spray drying process.Based on the physical property tester as fundamental test platform, the device was fixed with a camera, a temperature and humidity sensor probe and a set of equipment for hot air. This device could simulate the dry environment of spray dryer and analyze the variables of testing solutions' adhesiveness against drying time. To establish and validate a model of predicting hot-melt sticking in spray drying, data was collected by using data mining. The results of this study proved that the device could be used to predict the hot-melt sticking in spray drying based on the adhesive force of materials (testing solutions). In addition, the study also found that the adhesiveness of the hot-melt sticking materials gradually increased with the evaporation of water, while that of non-sticking materials first increased and then rapidly decreased.

ABSTRACT

Sleep deprivation may cause accidents, and it has deteriorating effects on health. A measurement of postural steadiness by a portable and affordable Nintendo Wii Fit balance board can be used to quantify a person's alertness. At work, people are under the influence of their environment—often other people—that may affect their alertness. This work investigates whether sleep deprivation among people is “contagious,” as quantified by sway measures. We measured 21 volunteers' postural steadiness while alert and sleep deprived. During the measurements, a screen placed in front of the participants showed a footage of either alert or sleep-deprived faces. We found a significant difference between the day time and night time steadiness, but found no effect resulting from watching footage of sleep-deprived people. This finding shows that a posturographic sleepiness tester quantifies physiological sleep deprivation, and is insensitive to the influence of social factors.

ABSTRACT

Background: Quantitative measurement of valproate and lithium induced tremor using hand steadiness tester and their comparison in bipolar disorder. Methods: 200 newly diagnosed patients of bipolar disorder were randomly allocated into two equal groups receiving lithium (300mg twice daily) and sodium valproate (500 mg twice daily) after they fulfilled the inclusion / exclusion criteria of the study. 87 patients from Lithium group and 93 from Valproate completed the study. Hand Tremor was assessed quantitatively at 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 weeks using hand steadiness tester. Anxiety level of the study subjects was assessed to be insignificant using a standardized anxiety scale. Final data was assessed after 24 weeks by using Stat Calc and Z test. P value <0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: No significant difference was found in terms of the development and transition of tremor induced by valproate and lithium (p=0.22). However more men developed tremor with lithium when compared with females (p<0.05) and the mean age of patients who developed tremor appeared to be significantly higher in lithium group (54.7±3.9) than valproate (39.6±5.1). Conclusions: Tremor of hands is a common side effect of lithium and valproate treatment. Timely, objective assessment of onset and extent of tremor has always remained a challenge to the clinicians. Hand Steadiness tester is a simple, portable, inexpensive, non-invasive instrument that can be used to ascertain the development and transition of tremor in a quantitative manner. This would guide the clinicians as when to intervene for better management of such tremors.

ABSTRACT

Maize crops in Brazil have a wide diversity of management systems. There is a large contingent of family agriculture, which uses little or no agricultural inputs, compared to the rural enterprise which uses the most modern production systems. This difference in the management systems is particularly noticeable in relation to consumption of fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones. Therefore it is necessary to obtain plants with efficient nitrogen (N) use that also respond to applied nitrogen. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of S0:1 progenies, in top crosses, under two nitrogen levels and select the best ones based on responsiveness and efficiency. Sixty seven S0:1 progenies from populations of single cross hybrids were crossed with two testers (T1 - single cross hybrid; T2 - population per se). A hundred and thirty four hybrid progenies plus ten controls were evaluated in two field trials with different levels of nitrogen (one with average levels - 50 kg ha-1 of N - and the other with low levels of nitrogen - 25 kg ha-1 of N) in a 12 x 12 triple lattice design. It is possible to identify and to select progenies from commercial single cross hybrids that are efficient and responsive to nitrogen application. The non-additive effect was as important as the additive effect for grain yield under different nitrogen levels.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical performance of mini-screws during insertion into artificial bone with use of the driving torque tester (Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea), as well as testing of Pull-out Strength (POS). METHODS: Experimental bone blocks with different cortical bone thickness were used as specimens. Three modules of commercially available drill-free type mini-screws (Type A; pure cylindrical type, Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea, Type B; partially cylindrical type, Jeil Medical, Seoul, Korea, Type C; combination type of cylindrical and tapered portions, Ortholution, Seoul, Korea), were used. RESULTS: Difference in the cortical bone thickness had little effect on the maximum insertion torque (MIT) in Type A mini-screws. But in Type B and C, MIT increased as the cortical bone thickness increased. MIT of Type C was highest in all situations, then Type B and Type A in order. Type C showed lower POS than Type A or B in all situations. There were statistically significant correlations between cortical bone thickness and MIT, and POS for each type of the mini-screws. CONCLUSION: Since different screw designs showed different insertion torques with increases in cortical bone thickness, the best suitable screw design should be selected according to the different cortical thicknesses at the implant sites

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate the time of latency and duration of two types of levobupivacaine 0.5%: plain and with epinephrine 1:200.000, in maxillary infiltrative anesthesia. The infiltration anesthesias were perfomed in the vestibule in the upper caninine chosen at random by the volunteer in a triple-blind study. The chosen tooth was anesthetized with both anesthetic solution in two sessions with a minimum interval of 48 hours. The time of latency and duration of pulpar anesthesia were analysed by eletric pulp tester (Analytic Technology, USA) and the soft tissue duration was noted by the volunteer. The results showed statistical significant difference (p < 0.05) when there was vasoconstrictor addition in time of pulpar (p = 0.0004) and soft tissue (p = 0.0019) anesthesia; however, no significant difference was obtained in latency period (p = 0.6547). It was concluded that both solutions were effective in obtaining anesthesia for hard and soft tissues and the addition of 1:200.000 epinephrine prolonged the duration of anesthesia .

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: For a long time, many of denture base acrylic resins have been used for edentulous and partial edentulous patients because of easy manipulation and good mechanical properties, but its esthetic aspect has not been commented enough. Denture base acrylic resins also has caused esthetic problems due to discoloration or staining as in esthetic restoration. Many researches and reports have treated the problems and accomplished esthetic improvement. But these researches and reports dealt with general food colors or beverages, not with fermented foods. PURPOSE: This study is designed to assess what fermented foods, such as soy sauce, gochujang, and toenjang that many of Koreans have taken in, influence on the color and hardness variation of denture base acrylic resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the procedure, twelve disks per 4 denture base acrylic resins were fabricated with a thickness of 2mm and 16mm in diameter. Each seven specimen were measured for discoloration with spectrophotometer, while the others, five specimen, for surface hardness change with Barcol hardness tester, over time. Each 12 specimen were immersed into the 4 beakers of fermented foods(soy sauces, gochujangs, toenjangs, deionized water), and L*, a*, and b* values were measured for the color difference(_E*), on the 1st, 7th, and 28th day with spectrophotometer, with the measurement of surface hardness change. Each data observed was processed statistically. RESULTS: The findings are as follows; Discoloration 1. All of denture base resins was not influenced by the kind of fermented foods, except for QC20. 2. Soy sauce and red pepper paste caused more change for denture base resins than deionized water and soy bean paste, except for Perform. 3. Most significant change was shown in Lucitone199., whereas Perform. results in the least change for all immersed solution, with no statistical significance. Hardness change 1. Barcol hardness values in deposited specimens have been changed low degree, but with significant statistical change according to the kind of food and duration. 2. Lucitone199. has significantly lower Barcol hardness value than others do. CONCLUSION: Based on the above results, it suggests that the habitual intake of fermented foods is not helpful for the color stability of denture base acrylic resins because Soy sauce and red pepper paste mainly caused discoloration and surface hardness change. Particularly Lucitone199. shows specific discoloration and low surface hardness values. Therefore, it is recommended giving caution patients with denture of Lucitone199. especially against the habitual intake of fermented foods like soy sauce and red pepper paste.

ABSTRACT

Use of electric pulp testing elicits painful response in vital teeth. In this study, we examined the excessive time from pain feeling to stimulation disconnection in clinical situation. D626D (Parkell Inc., USA.) scan type electric pulp tester was used in total of 23 young healthy individuals. Each of the right central incisors and first premolars were used as testing teeth. Stimulation disconnection was achieved by EMG in anterior belly of digastric muscle, finger span, and voice and the excessive stimulation time over the sensory threshold was recorded. As a result, we found that the short responses before the stimulation disconnection appeared following order; EMG, finger span, and voice. The EMG disconnection is suggested to be used to reduce the excessive stimulus time in electric pulp testing.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We observed the nature of ipsilateral weakness, not hemiplegic side after stroke. And we studied correlation between ipsilateral weakness and neurologic recovery of hemiplegia. METHOD: This study was prospective, follow-up clinical trial. Ipsilateral motor power was checked serially in 20 subjects using Nicholas Manual Muscle Tester (NMMT) (shoulder abduction, wrist extension, hip flexion, ankle dorsiflexion). The subjects are first attacked hemiplegic stroke patients. Other outcome measures are Mini-mental Status Examination (MMSE) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). We studied correlations between motor power recovery in ipsilateral limbs and recovery of neurologic impairment in hemiplegic limbs of stroke patients through SPSS 7.0 program. RESULTS: Ipsilateral motor power in early stage stroke patients is significantly low compared with that of normal subject except ankle dorsiflexion (p<0.05). Comparing ipsilateral proximal with distal limbs power in pre and post multidisciplinary rehabilitation program, upper proximal part recovered faster than the distal part, but which was not statistically significant. Recovery of ipsilateral upper proximal and distal limb weakness is associated with neurologic recovery in hemiplegic side. CONCLUSION: After the stroke, ipsilateral upper limb motor weakness does occur and which follows similar neurologic recovery pattern to the hemiplegic side. Ipsilateral cortical and subcortical tracts take effect on the neurologic recovery of contalateral side.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the knee extension force of healthy Korean adults by using a hand-held dynamometer and evaulate the relationship of knee extension force between each decade. METHOD: One hundred and twenty healthy subjects (60 males, 60 females) between the ages of 20 and 79 years were tested for knee extension force by using Nicholas Manual Muscle Tester (MMT). Data were analyzed for means, standard deviations, test-retest reliability and correlation with variables by using the SPSS(R) software package. RESULTS: The mean value of the knee extension force was 25.9 +/- 5.8 kg in the males and 16.5 +/- 4.1 kg in the females. Significant difference between each decade was found in the males but not in the females. The knee extension force of the males was stastically correlated with all of variables, i.e., age, weight and height, but the knee extension force of the females, was correlated only with weight. Intratester correlation coefficients were high for the Nicholas MMT to measure the knee extension force for healthy adults. Also the difference between the dominant and nondominant side for the knee extensor force was not significant, stastically. CONCLUSION: This MMT may be useful to quickly and objectively evaluate force in the clinical setting.
