ABSTRACT

Background: Under 5yrs mortality rates among male child is 30 and among female is 26 and overall infant mortality rate 24 per thousand respectively; these are the most vulnerable groups to different morbidity and mortality, and they ought to be fully dependent on parental knowledge and awareness to meet their health needs. Health seeking behavior (HSB) has become a tool for understanding the approach of people towards the health care systems in their respective socio-economic, cultural and demographic circumstances. A Community based Methods: descriptive study among “Tharu” ethnic women with children less than ?ve years of age in Triyuga Municipality, Nepal. Semi- structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic information,, knowledge and current practice regarding health seeking behavior, including awareness and accessibility of health services. Among 406 respondents, 388 of Results: their children were reported ill within last 1 year, with fever accounting for 70%, followed by ARI (65%), diarrhea (6%) and others. Where 52.8% of respondents had appropriate HSB, taking their ill children to hospitals. More than 52% of respondents had hospitals as the ?rst preference for treatment for every morbidity. Except for access to health care facility, there was no signi?cant association of HSB was seen with parent's literacy,income, gender preference. With satisfactory Conclusion: awareness, literacy, and accessibility of health care centers, the HSB among tharu women, for the children morbidity seemed to be satisfactory in comparison to national scenario and other marginalized groups

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: The tribal population in India is considered as one of the vulnerable groups with respect to their achievements in health and other developmental issues. In this context, this mapping review attempted to understand the health profile of the Tharu tribal community residing in the northern State of Uttar Pradesh, India through literature mining. Tharu tribe is one of the indigenous groups living in the Terai plain on the Indo-Nepal border. In 1967, this tribe was documented as a Scheduled Tribe by the Government of India. The present review aimed to map the health-seeking behaviour of the Tharu population and review other factors pertaining to their health such as socioeconomic, developmental, employment, education, etc. Methods: Online data search was carried out on PubMed and Google Scholar using search terms ‘Tharu’ AND ‘India’. In addition, official reports avaibale in public domain and grey literature was also searched. Results: Twenty seven studies including reviews, articles, books/book chapters were evaluated along with 13 reports (including reports from government organizations and grey literature) were retrieved and analyzed. Of the 27 published reports, 16 were found relevant to Tharu tribe in India. A total of 29 (16 articles + 13 reports ) were included in this review. Interpretation & Conclusions: This mapping review highights the health seeking behaviour of the Tharu tribe in India that can help inform future interventions to improve the health status of the Tharu tribe as well as other aspects of their development.

ABSTRACT

Tharus are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nepal making up 6.75 percentage of the total population, and yet oneof the weakest and most marginalized populace. Tharus have unique linguistic and cultural heritages to their credit.Tharus that inhabit Nepal from east to west are composed of various endogamous groups with different culturalpractices and languages. The present study deals with the socio-economic status, demographic characteristics andcultural pattern of the Tharu community living in Fattepur VDC of Bara district. A very little research on theTharus has been done or that the works dealing with Tharu culture are published in very low volumes.The mainaim of the work will be to study the cultural aspect of the Tharus that live in Fattepur VDC of Bara district. Thepoor and minorities are often left by the researchers while they might have a key role in development process. Veryfewer researches have been made on Tharu Community and till now, no research has been made on the TharuCommunity in the specified area. Living in substance land,Tharus are comparatively sidelined and deprived. Inthis context, this study will be very important and helpful to solve their basic problems such as illiteracy, poverty,poor health status, poor land for agricultural production, low socio-economic status, etc.The conceptual frameworkwhich incorporates parts of the theories of frameworks such as religion, clothing style, language, politicalparticipation, and customs and traditions
