ABSTRACT

With the use of a strategic pairing of planting time and macronutrients, tomatillo growth and yield can be boosted. Due to their complementing effects, the ideal combination of different planting times and macronutrients may significantly boost tomatillo growth and yield. The experiment was set by taking two treatment factors. Our treatment factors were: (1) Planting time (three time’s viz. T1 = 02 November, T2 = 12 November, and T3 = 22 November); and (2) Macro nutrients (four levels viz. F0 = N0P0K0 Kg/ha, F1 = N200P60K100 Kg/ha, F2= N250P90K120Kg/ha, F3 = N300P120K140 Kg/ha). The two factors experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In case of planting time, the sharp increase of fruits per plant (37.06), fruit weight (42.7 g), yield per plant ( 2.04 kg) and per hectare ( 85.06 t) were obtained from T3 (22 November). In case of macronutrients, the maximum number of fruits per plant (47.26), fruit weight ( 48.47 g), yield per plant ( 2.75 kg) and per hectare ( 114.59 t) were obtained from F1 (N200P60K100 Kg/ha). Combined effect (T3F1) had improved the number of fruits per plant (49.66), fruit weight ( 55.64 g), yield per plant ( 2.94 kg) and per hectare ( 122.84 t), vitamin C content (25.92 mg) and noted from T1F0 (02 November with N0P0K0Kg/ha) treatment combination that minimum number of fruits per plant (14.0), fruit weight ( 24.69 g), yield per plant ( 0.5 kg) and per hectare ( 20.85 t), vitamin C content (16.63 mg). So, the T3F1 treatment combination appeared to be the best for achieving the higher growth and yield of tomatillo.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Physalis ixocarpa Brot. (tomatillo or Husk tomato) is one of the five major vegetables cultivated in Mexico, but its yield in the field is low. However, greenhouse crops and the enhancement in plant density can promote an increase in yield per area. The aim of this research was to evaluate: yield, water consumption and water use efficiency of variety husk tomato 'Diamante'. The experiment was conducted under field and greenhouse conditions, during the two crop cycles (autumn-winter and spring-summer), with different planting densities (1.5, 2 and 3 plants m-2), in complete random blocks and three replications. The yield was influenced by the planting density and environments. In both environments, the planting density, with 3 plants m-2 increased yield 32 %, and 25% in water use efficiency (WUE). In greenhouse increased 32% yield m-2 and the WUE it was 18.1 kg m-3 while in the field was 16.4 kg m-3. Crop cycle spring-summer produced differences of 27% in plant length and 15% in stem diameter, probably due to the temperature that was 4 ºC higher with respect to autumn-winter.

ABSTRACT

Solanum crispum Ruiz & Pav. (S. crispum) is a southern South American native plant that is usually used in traditional medicine for the treatment of symptoms associated with both, acute and chronic ailments. Enema and infusion of leaves and stems are used to treat fever, headache, inflammation and hypertension. In this study, we aim to assess the vasoactive effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of S. crispum on isolated rat aorta rings. The hydroalcoholic extract of S. crispum induced a vasodilatory effect (42.6 +/- 4.1 percent) in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine (0.1 μM). The aortic relaxation was largely endothelium-dependent and mediated by nitric oxide (NO). The endothelium- and NO-dependence was demonstrated by a drastic fall in the dilatation induced by the extract when the endothelium was removed (10.6 +/- 2.3 percent) and when nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was inhibited (12.3 +/- 2.5 percent) by nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). This result supports the popular use of S. crispum in the treatment of hypertension that may be due, at least in part, to the vasodilator effect of one o more compounds present in their leaves and stems. Further studies should be performed to clarify this phenomenon.

Solanum crispum Ruiz & Pav.

ABSTRACT

During seed development the humidity content decreases while germinability increases, a process known as acquisition of tolerance to desiccation. However, this process is not well known in seeds of Physalis ixocarpa. The effect of three drying methods in the physiological quality (germination and vigor) and sugar content of seeds of P. ixocarpa cv Chapingo was evaluated at different development stages. Seeds were extracted at six fruit development stages (28, 35, 42, 49, 56 and 63 days after flowering, DDF) and exposed to three types of drying: forced air at 25ºC or at room temperature, and a control consisting in planting the seeds inmediately. In all development stages, both drying treatments elevated germination up to 42% (P £ 0.05) over the control. The emergency rate (seed vigor) increased on average from 7 seedlings per day at 28 DDF to 18 seedlings per day at 42 DDF, independent of the drying method, which means that these drying methods affected germinability instead of seed vigor. In all the treatments, saccharose and rafinose contents increased during seed development, whereas monosaccharides contents (glucose, fructuose and sorbitol) were not related to the drying treatments.
