Diccionario histórico-toponímico de la Isla del Coco, Costa Rica / Historic-Toponymic dictionary for Isla del Coco, Costa Rica

Many names have been used for the different places of Isla del Coco, and some have changed over time. Studying different historic sources, seventy-six names of the main topographic features were collected for Isla del Coco National Park, Costa Rica. These names could be grouped in four main categories: those associated with the British traveler’s visitations, the ones related with the republican period of Costa Rica and those linked with the island’s terrestrial and marine flora and fauna. The methodology used allowed the proper documentation of seventy-one names. This methodology and the publication of this dictionary intend to generate a feedback regarding the naming of topographic characters of Isla del Coco.

Se recolectaron de distintas fuentes documentales los nombres de setenta y seis topónimos correspondientes a los principales accidentes topográficos del Parque Nacional Isla del Coco, Costa Rica. Estos se pueden agrupar en cuatro grupos principales, como son aquellos pertenecientes a las visitas de navegantes británicos, la vida republicana en Costa Rica y aquellos de la flora y fauna, tanto terrestre como marina. La metodología empleada ha permitido identificar setenta y uno de estos topónimos. Conceptualmente, el dinamismo del abordaje metodológico y la divulgación de sus resultados sugieren tener implícito un proceso de retroalimentación.

O espaço iluminado no tempo volteador (Grande sertão: veredas)

COMO geógrafo, o autor propõe-se a focalizar na obra prima Grande sertão: veredas de João Guimarães Rosa, sondando a veracidade espacial (geográfica) na descrição das paisagens e no uso da toponímia, constatando a excelência na primeira, enquanto, na segunda, algumas vezes ela é iluminada por uma simbologia metafísica. Além disso, a veracidade temporal (histórica) na narrativa da personagem central – Riobaldo –, em vez de obedecer a uma seqüência cronológica linear, ela volteia segundo o fluxo da memória do narrador.

AS A geographer, the autor proposees to focus the geographic aspects involved in the masterpiece Grande sertão: veredas by João Guimarães Rosa, allaying the spatial veracity (geography) of the described landscapes and the toponymy, thus ascertaining the excellence of the first aspect, while the second is, sometimes, enlightened by a metaphysical simbology. Moreover, in addition to that, the temporal veracity (History) in the narrative of the central character – Riobaldo – instead of obeying a linear and chronological, flyies about in circles at the mercy of the narrator's memory flow.
