ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of paper towel combined with 360° horizontal turning over method on the field of vision, operation time and detection of small lesions before gastroscopy, so as to improve the detection rate of early gastrointestinal cancer. Methods:The outpatients and inpatients who voluntarily accepted gastroscopy in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University from May to October 2020 were enrolled. A prospective randomized controlled study was used. They were divided into the experimental group (paper towel group combined with 360° horizontal turning over) and the control group (routine) according to the random number table. Finally, a total of 948 patients were included, including 487 cases in the experimental group and 461 cases in the control group. The visual field clarity, operation time, rinse times, detection of micro lesions and detection of early cancer of the two groups were compared. Results:The scores of gastric mucosa clarity (fundus, body, antrum and whole stomach) in experimental group were (1.61 ± 0.79), (1.18 ± 0.56), (1.01 ± 0.36), (3.20 ± 0.51) points, which were significantly lower than (2.56 ± 0.82), (2.01 ± 0.65), (1.98 ± 1.10), (5.05 ± 0.89) points in control group. The difference was statistically significant ( t values were 0.02-0.07, all P<0.05). The operation time of the experimental group was (5.91 ± 0.41) min, which was significantly shorter than (6.80 ± 0.72) min of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant ( t=-7.46, P<0.05). The number of flushing in the experimental group was 67 times, accounting for 13.8%, which was significantly lower than 144 times in the control group, accounting for 31.2%, and the difference was statistically significant ( χ2=54.78, P<0.05). The number of microlesions in the experimental group was 398 cases, which was higher than 245 cases in the control group. The difference was statistically significant ( χ2=8.43, P<0.05). For biopsy pathology, the detection of precancerous lesions or early carcinomas in the experimental group (56 cases) was significantly higher than that in the control group (24 cases), and the difference was statistically significant ( χ2=6.45, P<0.05). Conclusions:The application of paper towel combined with 360° horizontal turning over method before gastroscopy can significantly improve the clarity of gastroscope field of vision, shorten the operation time, increase the detection rate of small lesions, and effectively improve the detection rate of early gastrointestinal cancer, which is a simple and practical preoperative preparation method.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Humidity and temperature are fundamental for the balance in the life cycle of living beings and, consequently, for maintaining the well-being of the human population and reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases. Thus, in order to mitigate the impact of climate change, especially in the period when humidity is not the ideal, it is necessary to adopt some assistance measures. The present experimental study aims to elucidate what would be the recommended option to improve the quality of life of the human being and to clarify which resources (air humidifier, bucket of water or wet towel) will be effective to improve the humidity of the air in times of drought and low moisture. Methods The experimental study was carried out with INKBIRD hygrometers allowing the analysis of the variation of air humidity throughout the day. Three forms of treatment were established: humidifier, wet towel and bucket of water. In each room, two hygrometers were placed equidistant from the occupant of the room and their respective treatment that varied between 1m and 2m away from the headboard indoor each room. In addition, two environments were used as controls, one being an external environment and the other an internal closed environment, totaling five rooms for the study. The rooms were monitored between the end of July and the end of August 2019 in Goiania (GO). Results Although assistance measures are used to significantly improve air pollution in times of extreme drought, there was a significant difference between them. The humidifier and a wet towel had 7.50% and 5.71% more humidity in the external relation (external control), respectively, more efficient. The volume of water, however, did not show significant difference (p>0.05) and, therefore, there was no variation. Conclusion The humidifier and the towel are treatments considered more efficient, and that there was a significant effect of distance on humidity. Therefore, 1m of distance is more efficient in increasing and/or maintaining air humidity, inducing improvements in the populations' health.

ABSTRACT

An unusual case of homicide of a 21-year-old man who was smothered with a hot steam towel by his mother and a pastoress in the name of exorcism. Homicidal smothering in adults is rare, but does occur when the victims are not capable of defending themselves in situations such as chronic illness, old age, drug intoxication or when restrained by other people. In this case, distinct facial scalding was a clue to smothering with a hot steam towel.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose was to describe comparative analysis of the surgical outcome of percutaneous K-wire fixation of bony mallet fingers reduced with towel clip and 18-gauge needle. METHODS: We analyzed the bony mallet finger patients with more than twelve months follow-up after percutaneous K-wire fixation. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Eighteen fingers were treated with closed reduction using towel clip and 18 other fingers were treated with closed reduction using 18-gauge needle. RESULTS: Radiographs showed bony union and no subluxation in all cases after K-wire removal. The average extension lag was 2.8degrees/1.9degrees, and range of motion of distal interphalangeal joint was 70.3degrees/75degrees respectively. According to Crawford's criteria, excellent results were obtained in 9/11 fingers, good results in 8/7 fingers, and poor result in 1/0 finger, respectively. CONCLUSION: 18-gauge needle reduction in percutaneous K-wire fixation is considered less invasive and useful method for treatment of bony mallet finger with comparable results with towel clip reduction.

ABSTRACT

Natural ecosystems are directly dependent on beneficial microorganisms present in the rhizosphere for soil health and plant productivity. Soil bacteria were isolated from soil of central and upper Himalayan region with a view to screen/evaluate their Plant growth promoting potential. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) are employed as inoculants for biofertilization, phytostimulation and biocontrol. Dominant morphotypes were picked up from King`s B, CAS, YEMA and Pikovaskaya Agar by employing dilution plating. A total of 55 isolates were evaluated for growth promotion using Paper Towel Assay on lentil and 9 isolates were selected for detailed characterization. In dual plate assay all 9 isolates inhibited Fusarium solani; few isolates were inhibitory towards Ganoderma lividense and Colletotrichum dematium.

ABSTRACT

Amyloidosis is a disorder of protein metabolism characterized by the extracellular deposition of abnormal protein fibrils. We report a case of macular amyloidosis due to nylon towel on his back. A 61-year-old male presented with asymptomatic hyperpigmented macules on the scapulae for 6 years. He had a habit of scrubbing his back for many years with a rough nylon towel while taking a bath. The histologic examination revealed liquefaction degeneration and homogenous eosinophilic deposition in the papillary dermis. In Congo red, amyloid material stained positively and in anti-keratin antibody staining. He had neither clinical nor laboratory evidence of systemic amyloidosis. A diagnosis of friction amyloidosis was made on histological and immunohistopathological findings.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the utility of surgical treatment of clavicle shaft fracture using a percutaneous towel clip reduction and intramedullary fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted for total 16 cases of patients who had no neurovascular injury and a few comminuted bone fragment among patients with clavicle shaft fracture from January 2002 to July 2003. The method of operation was percutaneous towel clip reduction and intramedullary fixation. The clinical and radiological results were evaluated. RESULTS: Radiologically, 15 cases showed bone unions and the average time was 9.1 weeks. According to Kang's criteria clinically, there were 14 cases which were more than an excellence. One case substituted open reduction and nailing fixation due to a medial migration of K-wire and re- displacement of fracture even in 1 week. However, there wasn't any other major complication. CONCLUSION: Due to its having no additional injury to soft tissues, no scar formations, and its short operation time, percutaneous towel clip reduction and intramedullary fixation will be very useful as one of the treatments of clavicular shaft fracture if it follows correct surgical indications.
