ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#Metabolic syndrome is a complex medical condition that has become an alarming epidemic, but an effective therapy for this disease is still lacking. The use of the herbal formula Huangqisan (HQS) to treat diabetes is documented in the Chinese medical literature as early as 1117 A.D.; however, its therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms remain elusive.@*METHODS@#To investigate the beneficial effects of HQS on metabolic disorders, high-fat diet-induced obesity (DIO), leptin receptor dysfunction (db/db) and low-density lipoprotein receptor-knockout (LDLR@*RESULTS@#HQS lowered body weight, fasting blood glucose and serum lipid levels and improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in DIO mice and db/db mice (P < 0.05). HQS also blocked atherosclerotic plaque formation in LDLR@*CONCLUSION@#HQS is effective for reversing metabolic disorder and has the potential to be used as therapy for metabolic syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Objective To systemically evaluate the clinical therapeutic effect and safety of traditional Chinese medicine on Kawasaki disease. Methods Through retrieval of the reports in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI), VIP database, Wanfang database by computer, the correlative articles of clinically randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in China during the period from 1990 to 2013 were collected, and their quality evaluation was made. All the articles were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, in which interventions were traditional Chinese medicine therapy and conventional western treatment. The articles selected were assessed with the software of RevMan 5.2. Results There were 212 articles searched out, but only 13 articles, 656 children with Kawasaki disease were conformed to the inclusion criteria. The Meta analysis indicated that the total effective rate in the traditional Chinese medicine group was superior to the group treated with western medicine. The difference in the curative effects between the two groups had notable significance [odds ratio (OR) = 3.58, 95%confidence interval (95%CI) was 2.16-5.93, test for overall effect Z=4.94, P<0.000 01]. No difference was seen in the curative effect of improving coronary artery changes between the traditional Chinese medicine group and western medicine control group (OR=2.03, 95%CI was 0.74-5.62, test for overall effect Z=1.37, P=0.17). Conclusion The clinical therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine on Kawasaki disease is superior to that treated by western medicine.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the psychological characteristics of personality of the nine constitutions in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),so as to enrich and develop the theory related with constitution in TCM.MethodsFrom May 2009 to June 2009,540 college students from two universities in Beijing were investigated by cross-sectional survey.Cluster sampling method was adopted and the constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire(CCMQ) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Short Scale for Chinese (EPQ-RSC) was used. Results ①In extraversion-introversion dimension,Gentleness type had the highest score(56.52 ± 8.48) and Qi-depression type had the lowest score (45.88 ± 11.13 ).The scores of seven pathological constitutions (Qi-deficiency type,Yang-deficiency type,Phlegm-wetness type,Wet-heat type,Blood-stasis type,Qi-depression type and Special diathesis type) were significantly lower than the score of Gentleness type(P<0.01 ).In neuroticism dimension,Qi-de-pression type had the highest score (59.31 ± 9.70) and Gentleness type had the lowest score (44.08 ± 8.55 ).There were significant differences (P < 0.01 )between the score of Gentleness type and the scores of Qi-deficiency type,Yin-deficiency type,Wet-heat type,Blood-stasis type and Qi-depression type.In psychoticism dimension, there were no significant differences between the score of Gentleness type and the scores of eight pathological constitutions.② Gentleness type was used as control, multivariate logistic regression analysis of psychological characteristics of personality of the eight pathological constitutions showed that the extraversion-introversion dimension was the meaningful relation factor of Qi-deficiency type,Yang-deficiency type,Phlegm-wetness type,Wet-heat type,Blood-stasis type,Qi-depression type and Special diathesis type. The neuroticism dimension was the meaningful relation factor of Qi-deficiency type,Yin-deficiency type,Phlegm-wetness type,Wet-heat type,Blood-stasis type,Qidepression type and Special diathesis type.ConclusionPeople with nine different constitutional types in TCM have shown corresponding psychological characteristics of personality. This study illustrates that nine constitutions in TCM are related to psychological characteristics of personality.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In the paper, the principle of determining similarity of chromatographic fingerprints of TCM has been introduced. Methods: In the chromatographic fingerprint analysis of TCM, the whole fluctuation of the chemical composition of TCM products could be estimated by the comparison between their chromatographic fingerprints. Two methods, which determine the similarity between chromatographic fingerprints using peaks area or data points of chromatogram, have been investigated by the simulation and experiments. Results: The results both suggest that compared with the method for determining similarity using data points, the method using peaks area is more robust and its calculating results is more reliable. Conclusion: Peaks area method is more suitable for chromatographic fingerprint of TCM.

ABSTRACT

The karyotype of cassia tora L., a commonly used Chinese medicine capable of improving cyesight, was analyzed in this paper. The results show that the number of the chromosomes of Cassia tora L. is 2n=26. Of pairs homologous chromosomes, the fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth and eleveth pairs are submedian kinetochoral, while others have median kinetorchores. The long arms of the fifth pair have secondary constriction The absolute length of the chromosomes ranges from 2.14 to 3.48 microns. The relative length is from 5.9% to 9.5%. The karyotype of Cassia tora L. can be expressed in the following formula: k (2n) = 26= 16 m+8sm+2sm (sc). These results provide more critical criteria for identiding Cassia tora L. on the chromosomal level.
