ABSTRACT

Skin diseases are the leading cause of morbidity in children. As children spend most of their time in schools, training teachers on the detection of skin changes and timely referral will prevent or reduce the complications. Hence, we propose a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of training for teachers in the early identification of skin disorders among primary school children in a rural area of southern India. The teachers of government and government-aided schools in the field practice area of Model Rural Health Research Unit, Tirunelveli, will be the intervention group. The same schools in the nearby village will be the control group. The investigators and the National Institute of Epidemiology, ICMR, Chennai will develop and validate the training manual. Using the manual, the principal investiga-tor will train the teachers on identifying and referring skin changes and provide a training manual, model register and referral slip to each teacher. The investigators will review the schools quarterly and collect the number of children identified and referred from both groups before and after the intervention. Thus, the trained teachers will be a resource to achieve the objectives of the school health program, comple-menting the health services.

ABSTRACT

Background: Healthcare professionals are at the receiving end of a large number of violent incidents directed against them. One of the reasons cited is the abysmal levels of communication skills of young qualified doctors. We feel there is an urgent need for training them in this area of behavioral skill. Methods: It was a quantitative interventional study. We measured the communication skills before and after training, by a scale devised for the study and pre validated by peers and piloted as a project. Results: The training is effective in improving their knowledge and communication skills giving them confidence to face the challenges of day to day clinical work in surgical setting. Conclusions: This small training module on consent taking needs to be incorporated in the internship training. Faculty need to be sensitised regarding improvement of communication skills and knowledge of the students by adopting this training module and workplace based assessment for all surgical interns.

ABSTRACT

Background: The mutual trust between doctor and patient, an indispensable part of the healthcare, is weakening day by day. This has resulted in unwanted incidences of violence and attacks on doctors. Communication between doctors and patients is an integral part of the relationship and is one of the major determinants of mutual trust. Apart from the knowledge and skills required to treat a disease, communication skill is an indispensable part of a doctor’s professional life. The resident doctors do not get a chance to learn and implement the communication skills required for the doctor patient relationship. Methods: An interventional study was carried out amongst 377 resident doctors of first to third year, from randomly selected medical colleges of Maharashtra having postgraduate courses in clinical subjects and affiliated to Maharashtra University of Medical Sciences, Nashik, Maharashtra during the period of February 2017 to January 2019. Results: There was significant difference in the pre and post test scores for quantified knowledge in relation to training in communication skills (p<0.0001), and also significant difference in the pre and post test scores for quantified knowledge in relation to basic doctor patient relationship, suggesting that the intervention was effective in improving the communication skills. Conclusions: The study has shown that there was significant difference in the pre and post test scores for quantified knowledge in relation to being doctor, basics of communication skills, doctor patient relationship, communication in special situation, and training in communication skills.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To develop psychosocial skills training module for schizophrenic outpatients. Methods Structured psychosocial skills training program, which were made according to community rehabilitation plan for schizophrenia, featured convenience and well operability. Subjects were 96 of 204 schizorenic outpatients in remission who were randomly assigned to receive psychosocial skills training combined medicine(observation group) or medicine only(control group) and followed up by 24 months. The changes during treatment were evaluated by positive and negative syndrome scale(PANSS), Social Disability Screening Schedule(SDSS) and patients' cognition function were also evaluated longitudinally. Results Relapse rate of control group (37%) is higer than observation group (17.7%, P<0.01). After Last Observation Carried Forward(LOCF), control group showed higer scores than observation group on positive syndrome (8.34±2.04 vs 7.66±0.97), negative syndrome(9.15±1.97 vs 813±1.15), total score (37.64±5.58 vs 34.79±3.64) and Social disability (2.81±1.90 vs 2.07±1.47) (P<0.01); observation group also showed a significant progress on cognition function(P<0.05). Conclusion This trial demonstrated the efficacy of the easy-operating structured psychosocial skill training grogram in preventing relapse and improving social adoptive function for schizophrenia.
