ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the influence of ultra-shortwave (USW) irradiation on infarct volume and Ca2+-ATPase (SPCA) secretion after brain ischemia and reperfusion. Methods Eighty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a sham operation group (n=8),a model group (n=36) and a USW group (n=36).The animal model of middle cerebral artery ischemia and reperfusion (MCAO/R) was established using the suture method in the rats of the model and USW groups, while the sham operation group was given the same operation but without inserting the thread plug. One day,3 days and 7 days after the intervention,12 rats were sacrificed and the infarct volumes and SPCA1 protein expression were measured using 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining and western blotting. Results No white infarcted tissue was found in the sham operation group. In the model and USW groups the volume of infarcted tissue decreased with time.Significantly less infarcted volume was observed in the USW group compared to the model group at each time point. The SPCA1 levels in the brain tissue were lower than in the sham operation group after one and 3 days of USW treatment, but they were significantly lower in the model group as well.As time went by,the average SPCA1 level increased significantly in the model and USW groups.A slightly higher SPCA1 level was observed in the USW group compared to the model group after one day of treatment, but with no significance. However, significant differences were found between them after 3 and 7 days of intervention. Conclusion Ultra-shortwave irradiation can protect against MCAO/R injury by decreasing the infarcted volume, which may be related to down-regulation of SPCA1,minimizing nerve cell apoptosis and promoting neural functional recovery,at least in rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of acupoint thread embedding plus ultrashort waves in treating sleep disorders due to restless legs syndrome (RLS).Method Forty-eight RLS patients were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 24 cases in each group. The treatment group was intervened by acupoint thread embedding plus ultrashort waves, while the control group was by orally taking Levodopa and Benserazide Hydrochloride tablets and Compound Vitamin B tablets. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was observed before and after intervention, and the clinical efficacies were compared between the two groups.Result The PSQI scores were significantly changed both after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment in both groups (P<0.01). PSQI scores in the treatment group respectively after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment were significantly different from that in the control group (P<0.01). The total effective rate was 100.0% in the treatment group versus 83.3% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Acupoint thread embedding plus ultrashort waves is an effective method in treating sleep disorders due to RLS.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture-moxibustion plus bloodletting in treating chronic ankle sprain.Method Sixty-six patients with chronic ankle sprain were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 33 in each group. The treatment group was intervened by acupuncture with distal points plus warm needling and bloodletting method in the topical area; the control group was by warm needling plus ultrashort wave applied to the topical area. The ankle joint symptom and sign score was evaluated before and after intervention, and the clinical efficacies were compared between the two groups.Result The recovery-markedly-effective rate in the treatment group was 51.6%, 74.2%, and 93.5% respectively after 1, 2, and 3 treatment courses, versus 26.7%, 46.7%, and 70.0% in the control group, and the between-group differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Acupuncture-moxibustion is an effective method in treating chronic ankle sprain.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy of Yaotongxue(Ex-UE7)finger manipulation plus ultrashort waves in treating acute lumbar sprain.MethodForty-two patients with acute lumbar sprain were enrolled and randomized into groups. The control group received lumbar ultrashort waves treatment and the observation group, Yaotongxue finger manipulation in addition. Pain relief and activities of daily living were assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Barthel Index before and after one and five sessions of treatment.ResultThere was no statistically significant pre-treatment difference in the VAS score between the two groups (P>0.05). After one and five sessions of treatment, the VAS score was significantly lower in the observation group than in the control group and there was a statistically significant difference (P0.05). No adverse events occurred during the study.ConclusionYaotongxue finger manipulation plus ultrashort waves is safe and highly effective in treating acute lumbar sprain.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the effects of low-dose ultra-shortwaves radiationon the expression of apoptosis-related genes Bcl-2 and Bax in lens epithelial cells(LECs) of rats. Methods Thirty-six Wistar rats were divided into a normal group(n=8 eyes),a control group(n=32 eyes) and an experiment group(n=32 eyes) randomly. Both eyes of each rat in the experiment group were exposed to a low-dose ultra-shortwave radiation for 7min,once a day until the end of experiment, while the control groups were not.Rats were executed after 1 w,3w,6w and 9w.Both eyes were resected, and lens were separated under a microscope and sectioned in paraffin. After Streptavidin-Biotin Complex (SABC) staining,Bcl-2 and Bax expression in the LECs were detected using an image analysis technique, and the data were analyzed using the software of SPSS 13.0.Results The average integral optical density (AIOD) of Bcl-2 expression in the experiment group was (0.391 ± 0.014) after 1 week,(0.4470.006) after2,(0.417 ±0.011) after3 and (0.275 ±0.007) after4 weeks. The corresponding AIODs for Bax expression were (0.180 ±0.015),(0.155 ± 0.007),(0.167 ± 0.003) and (0.251 ± 0.016) respectively. After l w of daily radiation,no significant difference was found in the expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax protein between the experimental and the other 2 groups(P > 0.05).Three weeks after the radiation, however, the expression of Bcl-2 protein in the experimental group was significantly higher than the control groups(P<0.001),with that of Bax being significantly lower(P<0.001).However,the expressions of Bcl-2 protein was significantly down-regulated and the expression of Bax protein was significantly up-regulated 6w later compared with those after3 w of exposure in the experiment group(P<0.001) After9w,in the experimental group, the expressions of Bcl-2 protein was obviously down-regulated and significantly lower than the control group. Moreover, the expression of Bax protein increased significantly compared to the control group (P<0.01).And there was no significant difference between the control and normal group(P>0.05) in the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax.Conclusions Low doses of ultra-shortwave radiation may protect LECs against apoptosis for a few days, but they may cause damage with repeated exposure.

ABSTRACT

@#ObjectiveTo observe the effect of ultrashort waves combined with medication on children with cerebral dysfunction syndrome (CDS) accompanied with pneumonia.Methods76 children with CDS accompanied with pneumonia were randomly divided into treatment group (n=38, treated with anti-inflammatory and ultrashort waves one time per day for ten days) and control group (n=38, treated only with anti-inflammatory). The effective rate and the days of rales vanished of children in two groups after treatment were compared.ResultsIn the treatment group, 14 cases cured, 20 cases got significant result, 4 cases were effective, total effective rate was 100%; in the control group, 10 cases cured, 14 cases got significant result, 9 cases were effective, 5 cases were invalid, total effective rate was 86.8%. There was a significant difference between therapeutic effects of two groups ( P<0.05).ConclusionThe ultrashort waves therapy is an effective method for the children with CDS accompanied with pneumonia.
