ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the current status of the use of neglect test tools and the awareness for egocentric neglect (EN) and allocentric neglect (AN). METHODS: A survey questionnaire was distributed to occupational therapists attending continuing education at the Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch on April 16. A total 143 responses were collected, and with the exception of 5 incomplete responses, 138 of them were analyzed. RESULTS: The most commonly used unilateral neglect test tools were the line bisection test (86 responses, 62.3%), cancellation test (35 responses, 25.4%), copy and drawing test (7 responses, 5.1%). In a follow-up survey of 86 respondents who used line bisection tests as the most commonly used test, the majority (82 responses, 95.3%2) were found to use the 20-line test paper. In question about the familiarity and education experience for test manual, only 20 responses (23.2%) and 3 responses (3.5%) answered ‘Yes’. In a question about the experience of a manual and the article for the manual, 25 responses (29.1%) answered ‘Yes’. In the question regarding the separation of EN and AN on the unilateral neglect test, 44 responses (31.9%) were ‘distinction’ and 94 responses (68.1%) were ‘no distinction’. CONCLUSION: Information on the guidance and interpretation of the line bisection test is lacking and the concept of EN and AN was insufficient.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate whether visual exploration therapy could lead to the recovery of cognitive function and activities of daily living (ADL) of stroke patients with unilateral neglect. Methods From January, 2012 to June, 2014, 24 stroke patients with unilateral neglect were randomly divided into control group (n=12) and observaton group (n=12). The control group received conventional rehabilita-tion therapy, and the observation group received visual exploration therapy additionally. They were evaluated with Mini-Mental State Exami-nation (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), modified Barthel index (MBI) and Chinese Behavioral Inattention Test-Hong Kong version (CBIT-HK). Results All the scores improved after treatment in both groups (t>5.375, P2.120, P0.05). Conclusion Visual exploration therapy could not only fa-cilitate the recovery of unilateral neglect in stroke patients, but also improve their cognitive function and activities of daily living.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the clinical characteristics and rehabilitation of apraxia with unilateral neglect after corpus callosum in-farction. Methods A case of apraxia with unilateral neglect after corpus callosum infarction was discussed. Results After rehabilitation, the apraxia and unilateral neglect were improved. Conclusion For similar cases, rehabilitation can significantly improve the symptoms and ac-tivities of daily living.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the performances in line bisection(LB)and line cancellation(LC)tasks of patients with unilateral neglect. Methods The unilateral neglect patients, performances in LB and LC tasks before and after rehabilitation treatment were retrospectively analyzed. Results Before treatment, statistical analyses revealed the patients, performances in LC and LB tasks did not differ from each other(P =0.902).After treatment, statistical analyses revealed a significant difference between the two tasks(P =0.007).With LB only,29/30(97%)patients with neglect were detected;with LC only,22/30(73%)patients with neglect were detected. Conclusions As the performances of unilateral neglect patients improved, patients revealed difference between the performances in LB and in LC tasks. One test alone would miss some subjects with neglect.Combinative use of the two tests was more sensitive than either of the 2 tests alone.

ABSTRACT

Unilateral neglect is one of the common advanced neurological deficits of stroke. This article highlights the post-stroke definition of unilateral neglect, incidence, sites of lesion resulting in neglect, possible mechanisms and clinical manifestation. It overviews the typing and complications of unilateral neglect, and points out that the significance on the assessment and treatment of unilateral neglect.

ABSTRACT

@#Unilateral neglect is a common and advanced nervous disorder of stroke, well-recognized predictor of poor neural functional outcome following stroke. There are several rehabilitation Methods including sensation input, visual scanning training, vestibular stimulation, head and trunk rotation, suggestive therapy, environmental adaptation and activities of daily living training, and some new therapies including prism adaptation, constraint-induced movement therapy, eye patching and transcranial magnetic stimulation developed in the past few years, which to some extent are effective on the treatment of neglect.

ABSTRACT

We have known that neglect can often be multisensory. This paper reviewed auditory disturbances accompanied by visual neglect.Patients with visual neglect often show deficits in localisation of contralesional single sounds, particularly in the presence of an ipsilesional competitor.Auditory and visual aspects of neglect often correlate in their severity.Recent neuroimaging findings in the normal brain showed that the brain regions damaged in neglect patients might contain multimodal representations of space.
