ABSTRACT

Breast cancer survivors often suffer from a variety of complications post operation, such as upper limb dysfunction, limb lymphedema, brachial plexus nerve injury, and so on. This article reviewed the pathogenesis and rehabilitation of these complications.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of contralateral controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES) on the upper limb motor function in patients with acute and subacute hemiplegia. Methods Forty-eight patients with cerebral apoplexy were randomly divided into control, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) experiment, and CCFES experiment groups, with 24 patients in each group. The two groups received routine drug treatment and rehabilitation training. For 4 weeks (6 days/week),all the patients were assessed before and after treatment by using the Fugl-Meyer locomotor rating scale (FMA),Wolf motor function test (WMFT),wrist extension active joint activity evaluation (WEAROM),and modified Barthel index (MBI).Results were statistically analyzed, and curative effects were compared. Results Before treatment,no significant differences in FMA,WMFT,WEAROM,and MBI scores were found between the two groups. At the fourth week after the intervention, the FMA,WMFT,WEAROM,and MBI scores were all significantly increased (P < 0.05).The FMA,WMFT,and WEAROM scores were all higher in the treatment group than in the control group, and the differences between the two groups were significant (P < 0.05).Conclusion CCFES can effectively improve the upper limb motor function in patients with acute and subacute stroke.

ABSTRACT

@# Upper limb dysfunction can severely threaten the quality of life of the patients with breast cancer after mastectomy. This paper reviewed the researches on its pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and so on in the last 10 years. Early rehabilitation is very important for upper limb dysfunction after mastectomy.

ABSTRACT

0.05).The incidence of upper limb edema and dysfunction was 4.2%(2/48) in PALD group and 16.0%(8/50) in TALD group(P0.05).Conclusion PALD may reduce upper limb dysfunction after operation in patients with stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ breast cancer, and does not increase prognostic risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the type of upper limb dysfunctions and to determine major dysfunctions influencing on the quality of life (QoL) in the early phase after mastectomy. METHOD: Among the female patients with mastectomy after diagnosed as breast cancer followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, 38 patients who had shoulder pain or arm edema were selected. Visual analog scale (VAS) for pain at rest and during activity, range of motion of shoulder and arm circumference were measured. Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and Short form-36 v2 questionnaire were used to assess the functional disability and health-related QoL. RESULTS: Lymphedema (31.6%), limitation of motion (31.6%) and shoulder pain (26.3%) were major dysfunctions. Patients who had limited motion showed more severe dysfunctions. The cases with shoulder pain showed low level of QoL in mental component. VAS during activity and activity of daily living (ADL) domain of DASH were major impact factors on QoL related to physical functioning. In mental component, social domain of DASH was the most influencing factor on QoL. CONCLUSION: Pain during activity, limited ADL and social activity were major problems lowering QoL in patients with breast cancer. The proper managements for these problems is needed.
