ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Vatiga manihotae (Drake 1922) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) is an important cassava pest due to the great potential damage and the increasing population in recent years. However, few studies about bioecology and control of the cassava lace bug have been conducted and their results don't provide adequate control strategies. An alternative to maintain the population below economic injury levels is through the adoption of host plant resistance. To improve the understanding about the bioecology and find new sources of resistance in cassava, the biological parameters and demographics of V. manihotae on five cassava genotypes (Santa Helena, MEcu 72, Col 22, Clone 02 and Clone 03) under controlled conditions (25±2°C, 14L/10D) were evaluated. Duration and viability of the stages, the period egg-adult, sex ratio, the pre-oviposition period, fecundity and longevity of male and female was determined, and a fertility life table was prepared. Insects fed on MEcu 72 showed increased nymphal, egg-adult, and pre-oviposition periods and reduced female fecundity and longevity in comparison to the other genotypes. Demographic parameters (Ro, rm, T, DT) showed a significant impact on the growth potential of V. manihotae fed on MEcu 72 indicating that the populations would diminish over time. The combined effect of these parameters indicated that MEcu 72 has resistance on V. manihotae specimens hindering their development.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate extent of larval period, larval survival (%), food consumption, and pupal biomass of Spodoptera eridania and Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae ) fed on fresh ears of field corn expressing Bt proteins (Cry1F and Cry1F+Cry1A.105+Cry2Ab2). Larvae of Spodoptera spp. survived less than two days when they consumed Bt corncobs and showed 100% mortality. Spodoptera eridania reared on non-Bt corn cobs showed higher larval development (21.6 days) than S. frugiperda (18.4 days) and lower viability (56.4% and 80.2% for S. eridania and S. frugiperda , respectively). A higher amount of corn grains was consumed by S. eridania (5.4g) than by S. frugiperda (3.9g). In summary, this study demonstrated that the toxins Cry1F and Cry1F + Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2 expressed in fresh corn cobs contributed to protect ears of corn against S. frugiperda and the non-target pest S. eridania . However, itis important to monitor non-Bt cornfields because of the potential of both species to cause damage to ear sof corn.


RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o período de desenvolvimento larval, sobrevivência larval (%), consumo de alimento e biomassa pupalde Spodoptera eridania e Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae ), alimentadas com grãos verdes de milho Bt que expressam as proteínas Cry1F e Cry1F + Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2). As larvas de Spodoptera spp. alimentadas com milho Bt sobreviveram por até dois dias, registrando-se 100% de mortalidade. A espécie S. eridania alimentada com grãos de milho não Bt apresentou um maior desenvolvimento larval (21,6 dias) do que S. frugiperda (18,4 dias), e menor viabilidade larval (56,4% e 80,2% para S. eridania e S. frugiperda respectivamente). Uma maior taxa de consumo de grãos foi observada para S. eridania (5,4g) do que para S. frugiperda (3,9g). Em síntese, este estudo comprova que as toxinas Cry1F e Cry1F + Cry1A.105 Cry2Ab2 expressas em grãos imaturos de milho contribuem na proteção das espigas de milho contra S. frugiperda e a praga não-alvo S. eridania , entretanto, é importante monitorar as lavouras cultivadas com milho não Bt, devido o potencial de ambas as espécies em ocasionar danos nas espigas da planta.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this work were to assess the infestation of ten genotypes of cassava by the shoot fly Neosilba perezi (Romero & Ruppell) and to investigate effects of plant age, temperature or precipitation on cassava plants infestation by the shoot fly. Thirty-two individuals of each cassava genotype were planted and analyzed every two weeks in order to calculate the percentage of plants infested by shoot fly larvae at each sampling event and per genotype. Infestation by the fly was different across the genotypes. Genotype IAC Caapora 105-66 and genotype IAC Cascuda were resistant to shoot fly infestation, whereas the genotype IAC 15 was the most susceptible to this insect. Plant age may have an influence on infestation by shoot flies. Advanced plant age apparently favors lower or even inexistent infestation rates. However, infestation rate does not seem to be affected by temperature or precipitation.

ABSTRACT

The Cattleya genus has a great importance in the flower agro-business market. Fusarium wilts, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cattleyae, is considered one of the main factors of decline and death of plants of this genus. Using seven hybrids (intra and intergenerics) of Cattleya, tests of resistance and susceptibility to F. oxysporum were performed in conditions of greenhouse for 12 months, using, as evaluation criterion, a scale of the disease severity ranging from one (resistant) to eight (highly susceptible). High susceptibility to the fungus by Cattleya Nobile's Wax Toy, Cattleya Orquidacea's Mister Fast intrageneric hybrids and Potinara Orquidacea's Havana Brown intergeneric hybrid, related to Brassocattleya Orquidacea's Melody intergeneric hybrid, high resistance to the pathogens was observed.
