ABSTRACT Aging and face sagging have many causes, and various techniques are used for treatment, including noninvasive procedures, such as focused ultrasound, which uses the principle of collagen regeneration by coagulative necrosis of the dermis layers using radiofrequency, but this procedure has complications. We reported a case of a 54-year-old female patient who complained of poor visual acuity in her right eye three days after a focused ultrasound facial aesthetic procedure, with the best visual acuity of 20/60. Biomicroscopy of the right eye revealed an acute cataract with three points of fibrosis extending from the posterior to the anterior capsule. The patient underwent phacoemulsification surgery with visual rehabilitation and improved vision of 20/20. We hypothesized that the occurrence of acute cataract was related to the inappropriate use of focused ultrasound.

ABSTRACT Optic neuritis is an important cause of unilateral and acute visual loss in young adults, but other differential diagnoses should be considered, especially when the disease has an atypical presentation. This report presents the case of a young woman with reduced visual acuity in her right eye, associated with optic disc edema and a relative afferent pupillary defect, that was initially misdiagnosed as optic neuritis and subsequently found to have paracentral acute middle maculopathy, possibly secondary to subtle impending central retinal vein occlusion. This case emphasizes the need to remember that retinal vascular diseases can occasionally mimic optic neuritis. Detailed anamnesis and ophthalmic examination can avoid unnecessary interventions.

ABSTRACT Purpose: This prospective, randomized, unmasked, clinical trial aimed to report the visual outcomes of cataract surgery on both eyes versus cataract surgery on one eye in Brazilian patients. Methods: This study included patients with bilateral cataracts and binocular visual acuity worse than or equal to 0.3 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution. The patients were randomly assigned to undergo surgery on one (Control Group) or both eyes (one eye at a time; Intervention Group). Postoperatively, self-reported visual function using Catquest-9SF (primary outcome measure), binocular visual acuity, stereopsis, and ocular dominance (secondary outcome measures) were compared. Results: A total of 151 patients (77 and 148 eyes in the Control and Intervention Groups, respectively) completed the follow-up. Patients who underwent surgery on both eyes exhibited significantly better self-reported visual function (p=0.036) and stereopsis (p=0.026) than those who underwent surgery on one eye. Binocular visual acuity and ocular dominance did not affect the group comparisons. Conclusions: Surgery on both eyes resulted in significantly better self-reported visual function and stereopsis than surgery on one eye.
ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the predictive value of initial intraocular pressure difference of the detached and fellow eyes of patients with complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachment on postoperative persistent ocular hypotony. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 538 eyes of 538 unilateral complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachment patients with a proliferative vitreoretinopathy grade of C-1 or higher, treated with silicone oil endotamponade following pars plana vitrectomy. The patients were divided into Group A (patients having silicone oil removal without ocular hypotony; n=504) and Group B (patients with persistent ocular hypotony following silicone oil removal [n=8, 23.5%] and with retained silicone oil [n=26, 76.5%] due to the risk of persistent ocular hypotony; total n=34). Ocular hypotony was defined as an intraocular pressure of <6 mmHg on two or more occasions. Patients' demographics, including age, sex, and follow-up time, and ocular characteristics, including ocular surgical and trauma history, initial and final best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure and initial intraocular pressure difference of the detached and fellow eyes, and anatomical success rates and postoperative complications, were retrospectively collected from the electronic patient files. Results: The initial intraocular pressure was significantly lower in the detached eyes of Group B than in Group A (8.3 ± 3.5 vs. 12.9 ± 3.3, p<0.001). Also, the initial intraocular pressure difference was significantly higher in Group B than in Group A (8.9 ± 3.2 vs. 2.2 ± 2.7mmHg, p<0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the cutoff value of the initial intraocular pressure difference was 7.5mmHg for the risk of persistent ocular hypotony. The most influential factors on postoperative persistent ocular hypotony in the binary logistic regression analysis were the initial intraocular pressure difference and the need for a retinectomy. Conclusion: In eyes with complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated with pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade, the initial intraocular pressure difference could be of value in predicting postoperative persistent ocular hypotony and could guide surgeons on the decision of silicone oil removal.
ABSTRACT
Background: Cataract is a one of the leading cause of treatable visual impairment. Premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation refers to the use of advanced and high-quality lenses during cataract surgery. Objective was to study the visual outcome with astigmatism correction in patients following multifocal, trifocal and EDOF IOL implantation. Methods: This hospital-based interventional study was carried on 33 patients who underwent cataract surgery with premium IOL implantation. Patients with astigmatism exceeding 1 dioptre who expressed willingness for premium IOL implantation were included in the study. Results: In the study, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were assessed in patients who underwent Premium IOL implantation at 1 week, 6 weeks, and 3-months post-surgery. Results indicated a notable decrease in uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), and uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) compared to preoperative values across all premium IOL groups. However, contrast sensitivity exhibited a significant improvement at these specified time points after the premium IOL implantation. Conclusions: In our study, all premium IOLs effectively corrected astigmatism and met patient satisfaction needs. However, toric IOLs exhibited notably higher patient satisfaction compared to EDOF, multifocal, and trifocal IOLs.

Preschool age(3-6 years old)is a critical period for visual development, and it is crucial to detect and treat visual problems in preschool children as early as possible. Visual acuity charts are important tools for screening visual issues in children. In China, the commonly used charts are the standard logarithmic visual acuity chart and the pediatric optotype chart, while overseas, the Lea, HOTV, and ETDRS visual acuity charts are frequently employed. Numerous studies have reported the measurability, repeatability, and sensitivity of these three charts in diagnosing visual-related problems in children. However, the application of these three charts is relatively limited in China. This article provides a comprehensive review of the design principles, clinical applications, and characteristics of these three visual acuity charts, so as to better understand their applicability and limitations in preschool children, and provide reference for the selection and improvement of vision examination methods in the future.
ABSTRACT
AIM: To investigate the differences in varying stages of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR)using optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA).METHODS: Cross-sectional study. A total of 77 cases(77 eyes)of diabetic patients were included, and they were divided into non-diabetic retinopathy(NDR; 23 eyes)and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR; 54 eyes)groups, further subdivided into mild NPDR(20 eyes), moderate NPDR(20 eyes), and severe NPDR(14 eyes). Foveal avascular zone(FAZ)area, superficial and deep capillary plexus densities(SSP and DSP), and visual acuity(LogMAR)were compared between NDR and NPDR groups. Furthermore, the visual acuity, FAZ area and levels of SSP and DSP were compared in different degrees of NPDR. Correlation analysis were conducted to elucidate relationships between FAZ area, visual acuity, SSP, DSP, and severity of the disease.RESULTS: Compared with the NDR group, the visual acuity(LogMAR)and macular FAZ area increased, while SSP and DSP were decreased in the NPDR group(P<0.05); there were significant differences in visual acuity, FAZ area and SSP and DSP levels in different degrees of NPDR(P<0.05). Visual acuity(LogMAR)and FAZ area displayed a positive correlation with the severity of disease, while SSP and DSP showed a negative correlation.CONCLUSION: With the progression of NPDR, the visual acuity(LogMAR)and FAZ area increased, and the SSP and DSP decreased.
ABSTRACT
Objective To compare the clinical efficacy of 25G+and 27G+pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)in the treat-ment of idiopathic epiretinal membrane(iERM).Methods A total of 50 iERM patients(50 eyes)who were admitted to the Third Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University from December 2019 to August 2022 were selected as the research subjects. These patients were divided into the control group and observation group based on different surgical methods, with 25 patients(25 eyes)in each group.Patients in the control group received 25G+PPV treatment, while patients in the observation group received 27G+PPV treatment. The surgical duration and postoperative 1-day incision subconjunctival hemorrhage and e-dema of patients in two groups were compared;central macular thickness(CMT)was measured by optical coherence tomo-graphy before surgery,1 day,1 week,1 month, and 3 months postoperatively in the two groups.Visual acuity of patients in both groups was assessed according to the early treatment diabetic retinopathy study(ETDRS)visual acuity chart.Intraocular pressure was measured by using a non-contact Callon tonometer.Complications, such as intraoperative macular injury, retinal hole, postoperative choroidal detachment, retinal hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and intraocular infection, were observed in both groups. Results The surgical duration of patients in the observation group was significantly shorter than that in the control group(t=2.314,P<0.05).The extent of subconjunctival hemorrhage and edema of patients in the observation group was significantly smaller than that in the control group(t=13.706,P<0.01).The ETDRS visual acuity of patients at 1 day,1 week,1 month, and 3 months after surgery in both groups was significantly higher than that before surgery(P<0.05).There was no signifi-cant difference in ETDRS visual acuity of patients between the two groups at 1 day,1 week,1 month, and 3 months postoperatively(P>0.05).At 1 day after surgery, the intraocular pressure of patients in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group(P<0.05).At 1 week,1 month, and 3 months after surgery, there was no significant difference in intraocular pressure of patients between the two groups(P>0.05).Two patients in the control group experienced transient ocular hypotension 1 day after surgery, while no such complication was observed in the observation group.Patients in both groups presented with varying degrees of retinal nerve epithelial layer traction, retinal edema, thickening, and vascular distortion before surgery. At 1 day after surgery, epiretinal membrane traction was relieved in both groups, and there was a significant improvement in the anatomical structure of the macular area compared to preoperative conditions. At 1 day,1 week,1 month, and 3 months after surgery, the CMT of patients in both groups was reduced compared to preoperative values(P<0.05);there was no significant difference in CMT of patients between the two groups at 1 day,1 week,1 month, and 3 months after surgery(P>0.05).In the control group,18 eyes(72.0%)were sutured at the scleral puncture sites due to leakage, while no suturing was performed in the observation group.Patients in both groups completed the surgery successfully, without any intraoperative complications such as macular injury or retinal hole.During the 3-month follow-up,no postoperative complications such as choroidal detachment, retinal hemorrhage, retinal detachment,or intraocular infection were observed in both groups. Conclusion Both 27G+PPV and 25G+PPV have good clinical effects and high surgical safety in the treatment of iERM.Compared with 25G+PPV,27G+PPV can shorten the surgical duration, better maintain postoperative intraocular pressure stability, and reduce the range of subconjunctival bleeding and edema.
ABSTRACT
Objective To investigate the relationship between the central foveal thickness(CFT),ellipsoid zone(EZ)interruption ratio and best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes(iERM).Methods A retrospective case-control study was conducted. The cluster sampling method was used to select 336 iERM patients(500 eyes)who underwent physical examinations in 9 community hospitals of the Kailuan Group from 2014 to 2018.Among them,215 were male(64.0%)and 121 were female(36.0%),with an average age of 31-89(66.4±8.8)years.According to the gass classification, these patients were divided into three groups:gass 0 group(201 patients,305 eyes),gass 1 group(75 patients,101 eyes),and gass 2 group(60 patients,94 eyes).Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between BCVA(converted to logMAR visual acuity)and gass classification,EZ interruption ratio,CFT.Results The average BCVA(logMAR)and CFT of 500 eyes were 0.45±0.28 and(337.6±101.8)μm,re-spectively,with EZ interruption in 86 eyes(17.2%).There were statistically significant differences in BCVA(logMAR)(0.62±0.29,0.48±0.23,0.26±0.32),CFT[(283.20±79.30)μm,(335.50±84.50)μm,(394.00±135.60)μm],and EZ interruption ratio(2.6%,20.8%,60.6%)among gass 0,gass 1 and gass 2 groups(all P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was no correlation between age and BCVA among different groups(r2=0.021,P=0.314);BCVA was positively correlated with CFT(r2=0.531,P=0.000),EZ interruption ratio(r2=0.304,P=0.000),and gass classification(r2=0.587,P=0.000).Conclusion The EZ interruption may occur in the early stage of iERM.BCVA is correlated with CFT,EZ interruption ratio and gass classification;the incidence of EZ interruption in gass 2 iERM signifi-cantly increases.
ABSTRACT
Objective To analyze the effect of baseline cytokines in aqueous humor in predicting the improvement of the central macular thickness(CMT)and best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)of patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein obstruction(RVO-ME)after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)treatment for 3 months.Meth-ods Totally 30 eyes of 30 patients initially diagnosed with RVO-ME in the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nanjing Medical Uni-versity from October 2021 to January 2023 were enrolled.Aqueous humor was collected by anterior chamber puncture be-fore the anti-VEGF drug injection. The levels of 11 cytokines in aqueous humor, including VEGF,intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM)-1,interleukins(ILs)and interferon-γ(IFN-γ),were measured by Luminex xMAP technology. The cor-relation between baseline aqueous humor cytokine levels and CMT,BCVA(logMAR)as well as their changes(difference between baseline and anti-VEGF treatment for 3 months)in RVO-ME patients was analyzed;the correlation between CMT and BCVA(logMAR)was analyzed at baseline and 3 months after anti-VEGF treatment.CMT and BCVA responders were defined as patients with 50%or more reduction in CMT and BCVA(logMAR)from baseline to the third month.A Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between baseline aqueous humor cytokines and RVO-ME patients be-coming CMT or BCVA responders after 3 months of anti-VEGF treatment. Results Compared with baseline, the CMT sig-nificantly decreased and BCVA significantly improved in RVO-ME patients after anti-VEGF treatment for 3 months(both P<0.001).The CMT was positively correlated with BCVA(logMAR)of RVO-ME patients at baseline and after anti-VEGF treatment for 3 months(P=0.026,0.002).At baseline, the levels of VEGF and IL-8 of RVO-ME patients were positively correlated with CMT(P=0.032,0.035);the levels of IL-6 and IL-8 were positively correlated with BCVA(logMAR)(P=0.018,0.002).The baseline IL-8 level in RVO-ME patients was negatively associated with the change in CMT(P=0.024).Logistic regression analysis showed that elevated baseline ICAM-1 level could increase the risk of RVO-ME patients becom-ing BCVA non-responders after 3 months of anti-VEGF treatment(P=0.023).Conclusion Baseline IL-8 and ICAM-1 may be predictors of CMT and BCVA improvement after anti-VEGF treatment of RVO-ME.
ABSTRACT
AIM:To investigate the effect of small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE)on the treatment of myopia patients, and the impact on corneal biomechanics.METHODS:Retrospective study. A total of 120 myopic patients(240 eyes)who were scheduled to undergo corneal refractive surgery in Anyang Eye Hospital from January 2020 to December 2021 were selected. The patients were divided into SMILE group(64 patients, 128 eyes)and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(TransPRK)group(56 patients, 112 eyes)according to the surgical treatment method. The two groups were compared in terms of uncorrected visual acuity, corneal biomechanics, corneal endothelial cell count, posterior corneal surface height and corneal surface regularity index at 1, 7 d, 1, 3, 6 mo and 1 a after surgery, and surgical complications.RESULTS:The uncorrected visual acuity of the SMILE group at 1, 7 d and 1 mo after surgery was better than that of the TransPRK group(all P<0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups at 3, 6 mo and 1 a after surgery(all P>0.05). Compared with preoperative values, corneal-compensated intraocular pressure, Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure, corneal resistance factor, and corneal hysteresis in both groups showed a first decreasing and then increasing trend after surgery. The corneal-compensated intraocular pressure, Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure, corneal resistance factor, and corneal hysteresis in the SMILE group at 1, 7 d and 1 mo after surgery were higher than those in the TransPRK group(all P<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups at 3, 6 mo and 1 a after surgery(all P>0.05). There were no significant changes of corneal endothelial cell count and corneal posterior surface height in the two groups after surgery(all P>0.05). Furthermore, corneal surface regularity index of the two groups showed a first increasing and then decreasing trend after surgery, with no statistically significant difference between the groups(P>0.05), and there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications between the groups(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:Compared with TransPRK, SMILE has less influence on corneal biomechanics, and better visual recovery in the early stage. There is no difference in long-term visual acuity between the two surgeries, and both have good safety and effectiveness.
ABSTRACT
ObjectiveTo analyze the prevalence of reduced visual acuity of young children in Changning district of Shanghai and to explore the influencing factors, so as to provide a reference basis for formulating prevention and control measures for children’s reduced visual acuity. MethodsVisual acuity examination and questionnaire survey were conducted on 5 772 middle class children in kindergartens and first grade children in primary schools who participated in the refractive screening in Changning District in 2019. χ2 test and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the influencing factors of reduced visual acuity. ResultsThe overall prevalence of reduced visual acuity among lower-aged children was 10.4% (596/5 772). The prevalence of reduced visual acuity in the first grade children was 10.1% (284/2 822), and that in the middle class children of kindergarten was 10.8% (312/2 900). The prevalence of reduced visual acuity was 10.2% (298/2 933) in boys and 10.7% (298/2 789) in girls. 98.1% of young children had one or more bad habits when using eyes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that frequent excessive head lowering (OR=1.713) and sometimes too close to the screen (OR=1.294) were independent risk factors for reduced visual acuity in young children; After stratification by age, frequent excessive head lowering (OR=1.997) increased the risk of reduced visual acuity of children in the first grade of primary school. Premature birth (OR=1.841), sometimes excessive head lowering (OR=1.363) and frequent excessive head lowering (OR=2.002) increased the risk of reduced visual acuity of children in the middle class of kindergarten. ConclusionFor young children, we should pay more attention to their daily eye use distance, correct their bad behaviors for using eyes such as excessively lowering their head when using eyes and too close to the video screen when using electronic products, so as to prevent and delay the occurrence and development of reduced visual acuity.
ABSTRACT
Idiopathic epiretinal membrane(IERM)is a kind of epiretinal membrane without any other known ocular conditions, which occurs mostly in the middle-aged and elderly people over the age of 50. As IERM worsens, the structure and function of the retina in the macular region are altered, leading to symptoms like reduced vision and metamorphopsia. The pathogenesis of IERM remains unclear, and surgery is the primary treatment option. However, there is no consensus on the best time to have surgery, and there are differences in how well patients recover their vision following surgery. Optical coherence tomography(OCT)and OCT angiography(OCTA), as non-invasive and rapid diagnostic tools to observe retinal microstructure and blood flow changes in the macula, have been extensively utilized in clinical settings. The use of OCT and OCTA parameters to predict postoperative visual acuity has emerged as a hot topic in IERM research. This article provides a comprehensive review of current research on the correlation between various OCT and OCTA parameters and the prediction of postoperative visual acuity in IERM, aiming to assist clinicians in determining the optimal timing for surgery and balancing the benefits and risks involved.

AIM: To investigate the effect of a new type of rhinodacryocystostomy combined with fluticasone propionate on patients with chronic dacryocystitis.METHODS: A total of 100 patients(100 eyes)with chronic dacryocystitis who admitted to our hospital between January 2021 and December 2022 were enrolled in the prospective study. The patients in the study were divided into a control group(n=50)and an observation group(n=50)based on their admission order and number. Patients in the control group were treated with novel rhinodacryocystostomy, while patients in the observation group were treated with a new type of rhinodacryocystostomy combined with fluticasone propionate. The preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), quality of life score, and recurrence of chronic dacryocystitis were compared between the two groups of patients.RESULTS: All patients completed the postoperative 6 mo follow-up, and the total effective rate of patients in the observation group was better than that of patients in the control group(98% vs 84%, P=0.001). There was no significant difference in preoperative and postoperative BCVA between the two groups(P>0.05). Preoperatively, there was no significant difference in the quality of life scores between the two groups of patients(P>0.05); At 6 mo postoperatively, the quality of life scores of patients in the control group, including physical function, psychological function, social function, and material life status, were lower than those in the observation group(all P<0.001). There were 9 recurrences in the control group(18%)and 1 in the observation group(2%), and there was statistical significance in the postoperative recurrence rate between the two groups(χ2=-2.739, P=0.001).CONCLUSION: The new type of rhinodacryocystostomy combined with fluticasone propionate treatment for chronic dacryocystitis patients has a good therapeutic effect, can improve the quality of life of patients, and reduce the probability of disease recurrence.

AIM: To investigate the effect of residual astigmatism on visual quality after phacoemulsification combined with regional refractive intraocular lens(IOL)implantation in patients with age-related cataract, and to evaluate the astigmatism inclusivity of regional refractive IOL.METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of 62 cases(73 eyes)of age-related cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification combined with regional refractive IOL(Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15)implantation from July 2020 to March 2022 at the ophthalmology department of our hospital were collected. They were grouped according to residual astigmatism at 6 mo postoperatively, taking 35 cases(40 eyes)with residual astigmatism of 0.75 D to 1.50 D as the experimental group, and 27 cases(33 eyes)with residual astigmatism ≤0.75 D as the control group. Visual acuity, defocus curves, objective visual acuity [wavefront aberrations, Strehl ratio(SR), modulation transfer functions(MTF)], subjective visual acuity(national eye institute visual function questionnaire-25), patients' satisfaction, and spectacle independence were compared between the two groups at 6 mo postoperatively.RESULTS:There was a difference in the preoperative astigmatism and the number of postoperative 6 mo residual astigmatism between the two groups(P<0.01). At 6 mo postoperatively, there was no difference in uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity, objective visual quality, subjective visual quality, satisfaction, and spectacle independence between the two groups(P>0.05). The defocus curves showed that there was no difference in visual acuity between the two groups at all points in the +2.00 to -4.00 D defocus range of the additional spherical equivalent(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15 IOL was able to accommodate regular astigmatism of 1.50 D.
ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT A 71-year-old woman presented a non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in an optic nerve with previously registered superonasal peripapillary myelinated nerve fibers. Her past medical history was significant for controlled systemic hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. The physiologic cup was absent in both optic discs. Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy mainly affected the temporal and inferior sectors of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, as could be demonstrated by retinal nerve fiber layer optical coherence tomography and optic disc optical coherence tomography angiography. Unlike other published reports, just a slight regression of the myelinated nerve fibers was observed after 1 year of follow-up. This occurred because ischemia mainly affected the temporal and inferior peripapillary sectors, whereas myelinated nerve fibers were superonasal to the optic disc.
ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe a 2019 acute toxoplasmosis outbreak in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and to evaluate the laboratory serological profile for toxoplasmosis for three consecutive years. The ophthalmological manifestations of the patients involved in the outbreak were also studied. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of a toxoplasmosis outbreak in São Paulo, Brazil, between February and May 2019. Epidemiological data were described, as were the observed ocular manifestations. As part of this study the number of patients with positive IgM toxoplasmosis serology was obtained from a large laboratory network (DASA) for three consecutive years, including the year of the outbreak (2018, 2019, 2020). Results: Eighty-three individuals were identified in the outbreak and two clusters were studied. The clinical picture of at least 77% of the patients, the epidemiological analysis, and the short incubation period (5-8 days) suggested contamination by oocysts. Serological laboratory data analysis revealed an increase of positive toxoplasmosis IgM in 2019 of 73% compared to the previous year. Ophthalmological examination revealed that at least 4.8% of the patients developed toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, none of whom had been treated during the acute systemic disease. Conclusion: Our findings indicate vegetable contamination as the possible source of this outbreak, a high prevalence of toxoplasmosis in São Paulo during the outbreak period, and a drop in the number of tests during the COVID-19 pandemic. Retinochoroiditis was observed in at least 4.8% of the cases. We confirm the need to implement effective means for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. This may involve raising awareness among the population of the importance of vegetable hygiene, and improved quality control of food and water.
