ABSTRACT

@#Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their parents require support from the community, and could profit from volunteer work involving the family. At the same time, university students demonstrate a high willingness to volunteer in community initiatives such as work involving children with ASD. This study aims to examine the relationship between ASD knowledge and the motivation to volunteer among university students. Students (N=150) from a private university in the Klang Valley, Malaysia, participated in this study. Instruments utilized in this study were the Stone Autism Survey and Volunteer Functions Inventory. The results indicated that a higher level of ASD knowledge was the strongest predictor of higher motivation to volunteer after adjusting for relevant demographic factors and exposure to ASD children. Meanwhile, female and Hindu participants reported a significantly higher motivation to volunteer. This study emphasizes the need to increase factual knowledge about ASD among university students, and any effort to encourage students to volunteer in helping individuals with ASD should include knowledge sharing about this population.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: It is paramount that attention to human and social aspects of the medical profession not be overlooked in medical schools. The present article deals with volunteerism and its social aspects, focusing on the actions developed by medical students, with the aim of arousing their generosity and beneficence. METHODS: This article consists of a literature review, report on practical experience, and reflections about volunteer activities, looking into its effects on the participants. RESULTS: Volunteerism is characterized by giving one's time and knowledge in the interest of the society in which one lives, on an unpaid basis, attaching importance to the community or to the others. According to the United Nations Organization, a volunteer is someone who, out of personal interest or citizenship, devotes some time to activities aimed at social welfare or public services, without any remuneration. Volunteerism allows exercising generosity and beneficence towards others, especially towards the neediest. It is desirable that students become more open to differences and be generous in their future professional activities. Furthermore, research has shown that selflessness, kindheartedness, and generosity activate areas of the brain that release endorphins, thus increasing the sensation of happiness and reducing stress and anxiety, in addition to other physiological effects, such as reduction of tension and improvement of immunological function. Notwithstanding these benefits, it is necessary to give some thought to how willing one is to regard volunteerism as an officially curricular activity in medical schools. CONCLUSIONS: Volunteer activities in medical schools can offer students direct contact with communities and people, especially with socially vulnerable individuals, promoting greater human involvement and bringing benefits for both providers and recipients of volunteer work. Being able to help and allowing being helped can open up opportunities and build collaboration and solidarity networks, which are conditions or virtues necessary for the good practice of medicine.

ABSTRACT

If you would like to be selfish, you should do it in a very intelligent way. The stupid way to be selfish is … seeking happiness for ourselves alone. … the intelligent way to be selfish is to work for the welfare of others." The Dalai Lama.

The contemplation of volunteerism as activity in medical school, put forward by Sapiro and Mattiello in the present issue of Scientia Medica, brings to light the idea that those who provide benefits have to understand why they do so, as occurs among adults. And to understand selflessness, a topic that has been recurrent in medicine over time, reading about what has already been produced is not enough, since exposure to the practice of concern for the welfare of others is essential. Observational evidence suggests that volunteerism may be beneficial to the mental health and survival of exposed individuals, even though the causal mechanisms remain unknown. Consequently, further studies are needed to shed more light upon the topic, but while that does not occur, the following quotation gives us some food for thought: "If you would like to be selfish, you should do it in a very intelligent way. The stupid way to be selfish is … seeking happiness for ourselves alone. … the intelligent way to be selfish is to work for the welfare of others." The Dalai Lama.

ABSTRACT

This research takes as its object of study the meaning of corporate volunteerism, based on the theoretical concept of the meaning of work as a subjective and social cognition, as it provides subjective components and socially shared aspects associated with socio-historical conditions (Borges & Tamayo, 2001). Its main objective was to identify the meaning attributed to volunteer work by the participants of a corporate volunteerism program in the scenario of a multinational organization. The research was conducted with 67 volunteers from four units of an Italian multinational company in the auto parts industry who were working on a social project. We adopted quantitative research methods, in which the presentation and analysis involved the use of statistical techniques such as correspondence analysis, descriptive analysis, analysis of Spearman's rho correlation coefficient and the Chi-Square Test of Independence; and qualitative research methods, through semi-structured interviews and content analysis. The results indicate that the centrality of volunteering is comparable to leisure and religion. On the other hand, the meanings of work range from a more instrumental perspective, related to the rewards in being part of the volunteer activity, to a more altruistic perspective of participation. Further research related to the meaning of volunteering should be done in order to better understand this emergent question in organizations.

ABSTRACT

Nepal has relied on volunteerism for delivery of essential health services for the past 25 years. Remuneration of Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV) is a highly debated issue. Studies show lack of remuneration results in higher attrition. FCHV's motivation and retention are vital for the programme sustainability. The study explored the perceptions attitude and experiences on volunteerism among FCHV, their supervisors and community. The researcher conducted 15 In-depth interviews in a district of Nepal. Data Analysis was done using QSR NVivo version 7 software. Open and axial coding was done according to grounded theory approach and final conceptual framework was built. FCHVs were motivated to be volunteers either because of their personal goals or due to obligations. FCHVs were motivated to continue as a volunteer because of a sense of reciprocity, service as reward, volunteerism as a spiritual duty, social recognition and attainment of knowledge. Challenges in volunteering included insufficient incentives, expectation of a regular salary, wrong community perception regarding their work and time constraints. Consequences of volunteering were empowerment and economic security. There is conflict between ideals of volunteerism and monetary expectations among FCHV. The issue of fair compensation of volunteers should be addressed.
