ABSTRACT

Anemia is the most common blood disorder in the world, affecting millions of people yearly. It has multiple causes and jeopardizes development, growth and learning. Current tools provide non-hematologist doctors with just numbers. The present paper proposes a web application intended to provide doctors at Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo with a tool for determining the morphologic type of anemia, creating a list of possible causes, and also storing patient data in a database for future researches. As an information system, the website constitutes a powerful tool for the decision-making process, in particular, the diagnostic process, intended to provide more detailed information on anemia as well as to foster the information management at the hospital. For the application, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP were used as languages; Apache as a web server; CodeIgniter as a PHP framework; MariaDB as a database management system; and Visual Studio Code as a development environment(AU)

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Exercise therapy after lumbar disc herniation surgery which is presented through hospital website was studied. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of exercise therapy after lumbar disc herniation surgery; the methods of evaluation are identified through the participating hospital's web site and exercise therapy that is presented on reference is compared. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Exercise therapy after lumbar disc herniation surgery is effective; however, patient training is needed to ensure compliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After searching on five different portals using the term 'spine surgery,' 230 websites were retrieved. The performance of lumbar disc herniation surgery and presentation of postoperative exercise therapy was discovered and the presentation of exercise therapy for surgery type and departments difference were investigated. Exercise therapy were classified according to purposes and method for reference and the number of each exercise therapy was investigated. Exercises which were divided by postoperative period were also investigated. RESULTS: In 230 websites were retrieved; there were a total of 103 hospitals performing lumbar disc herniation surgery: 23 websites (22%)proposed exercise therapy after surgery is 23(22%), and 2(9%) of websites proposed exercise therapy for the type of surgery. The number of exercise therapy proposed by the website was 15; of the exercises mentioned, deep abdominal muscle contractions was the most commonly mentioned, using the treadmill was least. There were 5 websites that proposed exercise therapy divided by postoperative period. CONCLUSIONS: Only 22% of hospitals with websites that performed lumbar disc herniation surgery proposed postoperative exercise therapy. Although th common trends seem biased, postoperative exercise therapy needs more attention and the construction of websites for patient access is necessary to provide better rehabilitation for patients.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to reduce children's sugar, natrium and fat intakes and establish their healthy lifestyle. To achieve these goals, we developed an educational web site and an e-learning system. The targets of this web site are children, parents and educators. This site has various information about sugar, natrium and fat, and has special menus for each target: such as the 'Let's study' for children, 'Guides for child's eating' for parents, and 'Educational softwares, Lesson plans/materials, and Textbooks/Teaching guides' for educators. We developed three nutrient characters and applied them to the web site. We provided information in the form of texts, images, flash and sounds. This site has special boards in 'Nutrition cafe' menu to interchange information or their successful stories between the connecters. We developed an e-learning system with two courses. One is for junior elementary students and the other is for senior students. Children can study each nutrient step by step in a course according to their academic ability and concern. Also, they can evaluate their academic achievement in this system, which was uploaded into 'Let's study' in children menu in the web site. Conclusively this web site and e-learning system could contribute to reducing children's sugar, natrium and fat intakes by helping children study them systematically and effectively by on-line system. We expect this e-learning system would be a new nutrition education system to make nutrition education more active.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, we have much more convenient access to every medical journal through web sites, compared to the paper-based publications of the past. Beyond simply reading, we can compose, submit, inspect, review, and store data through these web sites. Furthermore, medical journals do not operate independently, but are rather integrated through online journal databases: therefore, an era of ubiquitous access to medical information for any purpose, has arrived. Thousands of new papers are pouring out in the flood of information everyday, so that it is very important for authors to make their research outcomes known to science scholar online especially in the options or selections of his or her own purpose of study. Therefore, a thorough understanding of database usage is necessary in order to meet authors' and readers' goals. The Journal of the Korean Medical Association (JKMA) began operating an online database (www.kjma.org) in July 2010, to keep pace with international digital journal standards. Digital publication is a very encouraging improvement in meeting contemporary reader's' needs over the previous paper-based system. The tools and content of the journal web site will both be continuously updated. Our society ought to not only catch up with other society's but further develop our online presence in innovative ways. The authors here introduce and summarize the latest trends and ethical issues in online publication needed to manage and use the online medical databases appropriately.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality and accuracy of information on the Web about scoliosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five search engines were selected and the key word "scoliosis" was entered. 25 web site were chosen. Each Web site was evaluated for the type, quality, accuracy of Web site. Web site type was classified as academic, commercial, physician, nonphysician. Web site quality was evaluated according to scoliosis specific content using 32 disease specific key words. The accuracy was evaluated by three board certified orthopaedic surgeons. One point was given when we agreed with less than 25% of the information and four points were given when we agreed with greater than 75%. RESULTS: 25 Web sites were evaluated, 20% were academic, 64% were physician based. The quality score for academic was 13.4, physician 8.2. The accuracy score for academic was 10.6, physician 6.9. CONCLUSION: The internet information about scoliosis is limited for quality and information value. The majority of the Web sites were physician site but the quality and accuracy score were poor. The lowest scoring Web sites were physician sites. The public and medical association need to be aware of the limitation of the Web site. The guide line and certification for the Web site about scoliosis should be established.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The internet has a great amount of medical information for patients, but because no standards exist regarding the publication of medical literature on the internet, the quality of the internet information is quite variable. The purpose of our study was to assess the content and ethics of information on epilepsy, which is available on the Korean internet. METHODS: The search word "epilepsy" or "seizure" was entered into the five most commonly utilized Korean internet search engines. The web sites were divided into the higher or lower rank site on the basis of popularity ranking, and then evaluated by using both ethic and content value scales. The comparison between two groups was analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty eight epilepsy web sites were identified and divided into two equal groups. The average scores of ethic and content value scales were below half of the total score in the higher rank group as well as the lower. The score of higher rank group was not different statistically to that of lower rank group in both value scales. In addition, the score in the epilepsy specialists group was not higher than that in the non-specialists as well. DISCUSSION: The internet is easily accessible source of medical information including epilepsy. Moreover, because lots of epileptic patients are using the web for obtaining the information, the web information should be standardized. The results of our study show that clinicians should not recommend the epilepsy web site as a source of information for epileptic patients unless the epilepsy websites have been evaluated and assessed.

ABSTRACT

Food and nutrition sites are the major portion of the health information sites. For the point of public health it is very important to secure validity and reliability of information on those web sites. Therefore, in this study we would like to identify problems when acquiring recipes in web sites by analyzing and reviewing recipes in web sites. To investigate Korean food recipes provided in web sites, domestic search engines such as Simmani, Naver, Hanmir, and Empas and foreign search engines such as Yahoo Korea, Lycos and Altabista Korea were used. Searchs were done using 'recipe' and 'Joribeob (cooking method)' from March 20, 2002 to June 20, 2002. Informations in each sites were reviewed and analyzed Results are as follow; When classifying 46sites searched with 'Joribeob' by the information provider, 24sites were individual, 16sites were corporate and 6sites were others. When searching 'recipe', total 12,654recipes were returned. Out of them, individual provided 2,581sites(20.4%), corporate provided 7,249sites(57.3%), and others provided 2,824sites(22.3%). 9,979(78.9%) recipes out of 12,654recipes were proved to be appropriate as Korean food. Classifying recipes by dish group, vegetables 11.7%, soups and hot soups 9.7%, stew and casseroles 8.2%, pan cakes 8.0%, stir fried foods and skewers 7.8%, rice 7.2%, hard boiled food 7.1%, steam 6.4%, noodles and mandu 5.3%, Kimchi 4.5%, fried 4.1%, and porridge 3.7% in order. 21.1% of recipes were not appropriate as Korean food but provided as Korean Food. The proportion of individual as the information provider were higher than that of enterprises. Recipes from enterprises were based on food and nutrient information and more reliable. However, there were some cases that they provided the same amount of ingredients with different calories or provided the same calories with different ingredients. Additionally, depending on sites, they provided different calories even for the same recipe. There were some cases that the calories provided on the site were too high or too low, for the suggested amount of ingredients and serving size. Recipes those provide amount of calories were evaluated using the nutrient analysis program. Calculated calories and provided calories on the Web were compared together. There are difference between two valus. With these results, it may lead misuse of recipe by those who need accuracy in diet such as patients or who are interested in recipe information for academic purposes. These results could be used as basic materials to improve quantity and quality of recipes in the future. Also, to improve the accuracy of recipies for Korean foods in the web sites, there should be some systems to monitor and let internet users know monitoring results.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the status of the websites of plastic surgery clinics in Seoul, and to elucidate the factors that affect the page views. Directors of the clinics were asked by telephone as to whether their clinics have an website, and the rank of their sites were measured using the Navvy (ve r 2.75) program. The gene ral characteristics of each clinic and directors were surveyed using the list of members for the Korean association of clinical plastic surgeons. The characteristics of the websites were also surveyed and categorized into their accessibility, introduction, contents, interactions, and etc. The relationship between each variable, the possession of a homepage and the rank were analyzed by univariate analysis and the independent effects of these variables were examined by multiple logistic regression analysis. The results are as follows: 196 out of 252 clinics(77.8%) had a website and 77 of these sites were ranked below the 150,000th place. In multiple logistic regression analysis, younger directors had a higher likelihood of possessing a website, and the location of the clinic also significantly affected whether or not there was a website. The websites of the clinics located in Kangnam/Seocho-gu and run by more than 2 plastic surgeons had a higher tendency to rank be low the 150,000th place. However, the char acteristic s of the website did not aff ect the r ank distribution. Considering the above results, the characteristics of the clinics and surgeons may contribute greatly for the clinics to have a website and to have a high rank. In addition, the characteristics of the site may not be a major influencing fac tor.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to construct web sites providing information on epilepsy and to evaluate its practical use. To estimate the demand for such information, a questionnaire was administrated to 106 patients, their 54 families, and 78 nurses, who consented to be interviewed. After using the data collected from the survey to build a epilepsy information web site, data on the level of satisfaction for the website were collected by e-mails and direct surveys from subjects who used this web site; the collected data were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows: The educational level demanded by nurses was slightly higher than those of patients and their families. Patients, their families, and nurses wanted more information on how to handle patients during seizures, especially, and. families wanted to know about drug therapy. The content of the web site was configured based on the educational level of perceived users. Photoshop 6.0, Flash MX and FrontPage 2000 were used to build the web site. Images available on the internet that are shared served as the source of images. The program's URL is www.multimoon.com/black. Regarding user satisfaction with the web site, users found that the Information on the Prognosis of Epilepsy, the Pharmacological Treatment of Epilepsy, Occupation and Marriage Status in Daily Life, and the How to Manage Epileptic Attacks sections were quite helpful. Generally, the reactions to the website were positive. To construct an effective web site to provide information about epilepsy to patients, their families and nurses, educational data and information that meet the demands of users should be added. Its contents should be continuously updated, and its environment should be kept user-friendly so that the information can be accessed with ease.

ABSTRACT

Background : As the consequence of the decision at the International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) progress, drug safety information reporting system in Japan is being revised. This has led to inevitable increases in the number of safety reports submitted to the industries and in turn, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW). In 1997, the MHW announced they would publicize this acquired information starting in 1999. In the USA, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released safety related information to the public, acquired over the years since 1969, though such means in the Web page of MEDWatch using the internet.<BR>Purpose : (1) To review accessibility of individual adverse experience (AE) reports in MEDWatch through internet, (2) to give advise to other possible Japanese users on the use of it and, (3) to give recommendation to the new system being developed in Japan by the MHW and/or other regulatory agency. <BR>Method : Case study started by using personal computer.<BR>Results : (1) The information cannot be accessible only using personal computers. Computer expert assistance and big computer are needed to access the information. (2) Information from more than a million AE cases is accessible. (3) Searches for information can be organized by pharmaceutical name, event term, patient demographics, and others. (4) The detailed information such as the course of the individual case from which drug causality could be assessed is not accessible. (5) The improvement of system should be needed for easy access such as “quick search”. (6) More “user friendly” system is desired to be developed by the MHW and/or other regulatory agency in Japan which enable easy and full access of the information.
