ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the unique relationship between Willis circle and cerebral watershed infarction in a Chinese population. Methods A retrospective analysis of cerebral CT angiography was conducted in 471 non-cere?bral watershed infarctions and 93 MRI-diagnosed cerebral watershed infarctions (CWI)(including External CWI and In?ternal CWI)in Department of Neurology of our hospital and compare the related variations and types of Willis circle be?tween these groups. Results Compared with non-cerebral watershed infarctions, the prevalence of Uni-FTP (short for“fetal type of the Posterior cerebral artery”) in E-CWI (36.4%, P<0.05) and Bi-FTP in I-CWI (0%, P<0.05) was signifi?cantly higher in cerebral watershed infarctions. Conclusion FTP is probably an unique risk factor in Chinese patients with CWI.

ABSTRACT

Objective To find out and clone the genes that can influence different willis circle in Meriones unguiculatus, the genomic library has been made. Methods 96 clean Meriones unguiculatus were dissected according to observe the differences of willis circle, and the mixed DNA was extracted from different blood vessels. The genomic library construction has been done by using pCC1FOS vector, following by CopyControl Fosmid Lib manual. The copy numbers, recombined segment size and recombination fraction of the library were measured. Results Genomic library of different Willis circle in Meriones unguiculatus was successfully made. The capacity of the library was 1700 copies. The segment size was 36kb, and the recombination fraction was 93%.Conclusion The library was the good beginning for the following steps which were gene cloning and genescreen.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the normal anatomy and variation of Willis circle by 64-slice volume CT digital subtraction angiography(VCTDSA).Methods VCTDSA data of 174 patients with cephalocervical and cephalic scanning in our hospital from February 2006 to September 2008 were analyzed.Developmental condition, shape, size, integrity, and perforating branches of Willis circle were observed.Results(1) Hypoplasia was displayed in any component vessels of Willis circle.Incidence rate of hypoplasia was 20.1% in left posterior communicating artery,16.1% in right posterior communicating artery,13.8% in right anterior cerebral artery A1,9.2% in right posterior cerebral artery P1,7.3% in anterior communicating artery,6.3% in left posterior cerebral artery P1,and 3.4% in left anterior cerebral artery A1.Congenital arterial absence occurred more frequently in right posterior communicating artery(54.6%),left posterior communicating artery(52.3%),and anterior communicating artery(15.8%).(2) Hypoplasia or congenital absence of posterior circulation and anterior-posterior circulation occurred with a rate of 55.8% and 29.8% respectively.Integrity of Willis circle was only 9.2%.There were 17 perforating branches and 26 heubner inversion arteries observed in 174 Willis circle, with an average diameter of 0.82 mm and 0.94 mm respectively. Conclusion VCTDSA can display Willis circle completely and clearly.Using three-dimensional rotation may detect all kinds of variation and perforating branches of Willis circle.

ABSTRACT

Objective To get more detailed information about the microsurgery of the Willis circle,in order to provide evidence of clinical operation. Methods The microsurgical anatomy of the Willis circle via combined frontotemporal-orbitozygomatic approach was studied in 5 adult cadaver brains under microsurgical scope. Results The Willis circle was composed of anterior communicating artery (ACOA), A 1 segments of the right and left anterior cerebral arteries (ACA), right and left internal carotid arteries(ICA) right and left, posterior communicating artery (PCOA), Pi segments of the right and left posterior cerebral arteries (PCA).The variation are present obviously in A 1 segment of the ACA. The outer diameter of left A 1 segment are larger than that of right ones. There are many perforating arteries of each part of Willis circle. Most of them arise from their original arteries, then course medial-superiorly to the optic tract, the pituitary stalk, the optic chiasm, the thalamus, hypothalamus, the floor of third ventricle, basal nuclei and internal capsule etc blood supplied areas. Conclusion To understand the microsurgical anotamy of the Willis circle and protections against its penetrating branches perfectly are the key to gain a good curative effect during the concerned operation .

ABSTRACT

The authors studied and analyzed microscopically the structure, length and diameter of each part of Willis circle in 264 cerebral hemispheres of 182 autopsied patients in the Taegu area from 1984 to 1990. The mean length of each A1 was 14.1mm and diameter at distal A1 was 2.25mm. The most common anatomical anomaly of the ACA part was A1 that of hypoplasia which appeared in 7.5% of the cases. The origin of the Heuner a. was accounted for the highest incidence of AcoA(82.5%). The length of AcoA. Noted 3.5mm with the incidence of duplication and triplication in 38.6%. The inner diameter of ICA noted 3.9mm at the communicating segment in ICA, and the average length of C4 was 12.5m. Except 5 hemispheres of undetectable origin at ICA, all the anterior choroidal a. originated from ICA, and the double stump of which noted 15.5%. Fetal type PcoA. Showed 6.6% of all and average length of the a. was 13.5mm. The inner diameter of MCA was 3.1mm and the mean length of M1 noted 15.5mm. The length of each P1 noted 6.95mm and the inner diameter of basilar a. at 1cm below the bifurcation was 3.3mm. The mean circumference of willis circle including both side of A1, P1, PcoA. AcoA. And choroidal and communicating segment of ICA was 88.6mm. Incidental finding of unruptured aneurysm noted 5.3% and junctional dilatation of PcoA. Showed 11.4% of all the cases.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To research the relationship between anteroposterior aneurysms on communicating branches and the hemodynamic changes in Willis circle. Methods:Cerebral DSA findings in 208 cases were retrospectively analyzed.Results:A1 dominant signs in aneurysms group of the anterior communicating atery was more common than those in the control group( P 0.05).Conclusion:The development of cerebral aneurysms on anterior communicating segment is related with the hemodynamic changes in the anterior circle of Willis, while hemodynamic changes in the posterior circle of Willis has no relation to the aneurysms on the ipsilateral internal carotid-posterior communicating artery junction.
