ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: 3D printing external fixation fixture can make individualized external fixation scheme for fracture patients and is easy to wear. Zicao oil (a Chinese traditional medicine oil) for trauma treatment has the effect of reducing swelling and removing blood stasis to assist the rehabilitation treatment of fracture. The combination of the two could benefit the rehabilitation of patients with fracture conservative treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application value of the 3D printed orthopedic cast combined with Zicao oil in the treatment of distal radial fracture, hoping to provide a basis for the further study of a combined Chinese and western medicine treatment scheme for the recovery of wrist function after distal radius fractures. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with distal radial fracture were selected and randomly divided into two groups. Patients in the trial group received 3D-printed cast combined with Zicao oil treatment after manual reduction. Patients in the control group received traditional splint cast combined with Zicao oil after manual reduction. The Jakim scoring for distal radial fracture treatment, as well as pain degree, swelling degree, wrist range of motion, grasping ability and deformity degree were evaluated and compared 2 weeks after removal of external fixation in both groups. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The excellent and good rate was 94% in the trial group and 78% in the control group. There was significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.01). (2) At 2, 4, 8 and 14 days after treatment, the scores of wrist range of motion and visual analogue scale were significantly better than those before treatment (P < 0.01). At different time points after treatment, the scores of wrist range of motion and visual analogue scale in the trial group were significantly better than those in the control group (P < 0.05). (3) The swelling degree of the trial group was better than that of the control group 2, 4, 8 and 14 days after treatment (P < 0.05). (4) The results show that 3D printed cast combined with Zicao oil is effective in the treatment of distal radius fracture, can effectively improve the function of wrist joint, reduce the pain of patients and improve the quality of rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are a class of hepatotoxic compounds that are largely found in plants. "Zicao" is one of the most commonly-used Chinese herbal medicines from multiple sources, owing to its anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects. However, many studies have shown that this herb and its relative species contain hepatotoxic PAs. These PAs may cause hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome following metabolic activation, and are therefore considered as potential toxic substances. Even though the toxicity of "Zicao" in clinical use has not been reported, the existence of PAs will undoubtedly post a threat for its safety in long-term use. It has now become the focus of many researchers to disclose and prevent its potential risk of intoxication. This review summarizes recent progress and key scientific evidence found in the research of pyrrolizidine alkaloids from "Zicao" and its relative species, including their metabolic toxicity. We comment on the need of future studies, such as providing a reference or guidance for safety evaluation of this medicinal herb in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Naphthoquinones are a kind of important active ingredients in the traditional Chinese medicinal herb "Zicao". In recent years, researches on pharmacology and clinical application of naphthoquinones in Zicao have been gradually deepened and made extensive progress around the world. On the other hand, the plant origins of the herbal materials of Zicao in market are complex and their qualities are quite different, thus more and more studies have been focused on the quantitative determination and quality assessment of the medicinal herb as well as its products by using various naphthoquinones as quality chemical markers. In this paper, we review recent advances in the research on pharmacological actions and multi-components content determination of shikonin/alkannin and its derivatives in Zicao so as to provide a scientific guidance for further research and development of medicinal resource of Zicao, and to establish more comprehensive and systematic method for their quality control and evaluation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To develop an HPLC method for the determination of caffeic acid tetramers cat and salvianolic acid B in Compound zicao granule. METHODS:YMC-Pack ODS-A C18(250 mm?4.6 mm,5 ?m) column was used with mobile phase consisted of methanol-0.5% phosphoric acid (40 ∶ 60) and flow rate set at 1.0 mL?min-1. The detection wavelength was set at 252 nm and column temperature was set at room temperature. The injection volume was 10 ?L. RESULTS:The linear ranges were 0.065~1.82 ?g for caffeic acid tetramers cat(r=0.999 6) and 0.205~5.74 ?g for salnianolic acid B (r=0.999 7).The average rec-overies of caffeic acid tetramer and salnianolic acid B were 98.72%(RSD=3.27%,n=9)and 101.39%(RSD=1.81%,n=9),resp-ectively. CONCLUSION:The method is simple, reliable, stable and reproducible for quality control of Compound zicao granule.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To observe the effect of Zicao Tianhuafen Decoction (ZTD), mainly composed of Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi, Radix Trichosanthis, Rhizoma Bletillae, Radix Notoginseng and Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, on abortion induced by mifepristone. [Methods] One hundred and sixty cases were randomly allocated to two groups. After administration of mifepristone in the two groups, Group A was given ZTD while Group B was not. Complete abortion rate, incomplete abortion rate, ineffective rate, vaginal bleeding volume and bleeding time were observed after treatment. [Results] The complete abortion rate was 96.25% in Group A and 86.25% in Group B (P = 0.058). Vaginal bleeding volume was less and bleeding time shorter in Group A than those in Group B(P = 0.001). [Conclusion] ZTD can decrease the vaginal bleeding volume and shorten the bleeding time and tends to increase the complete abortion rate.

ABSTRACT

162 cases of psoriasis, mainly of blood - heat and blood -dryness types, complicated with wind, dampness, blood -stasis and kidney deficiency, were treated with ZBS as basic recipe with modifications. The cured rate was 46%, with a total effective rate of 89%. It was claimed that psoriasis is caused mostly by deficient liver - yin and exuberant liver -yang. Patients with punctata type lesion are mostly complicated with superficies syndrome and excessiveness of the lung; while those with plaque lesions, complicated with wind - dryness and blood stasis: and those arthropathic type patients, with kidney deficiency: erythema type patients, with drug poisoning.
