ABSTRACT

To investigate the N-containing compounds in the seeds of Paganum harmala,fourteen compounds were finally isolated from the 95% Et OH extract of P. harmala seeds by using various chromatographic techniques including silica gel,MCI resin,and ODS column chromatography as well as the semi-preparative HPLC. Depending on spectroscopic techniques and comparison with the reported data in the literatures,the structures of all compounds were identified as N-[3-(2-amino-4-methoxyphenyl)-3-oxopropyl]acetamide(1),dehydroharmalacidine(2),harmalacidine(3),harmine N-oxide(4),harmine(5),tetrahydroharmine(6),demethylharmalacidine(7),harmol(8),tetrahydroharmol(9),harmindol β-D-glucopyranoside(10),tryptophyl β-D-glucopyranoside(11),pegamineβ-D-glucopyranoside(12),vasicol(13) and vasicinone(14). Among them,1 was a new compound,and 2 and 10 were obtained as natural products for the first time.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research work is to carryout the phytochemical screening and evaluate the analgesic, antiinflammatory activities of Peganum harmala Linn., seeds. In this study different extracts of Peganum harmala (Linn) seeds were evaluated for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities using glacial acetic acid induced writhing and carrageenan induced rat paw edema models respectively. For analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities aspirin and diclofenac were used as standard drugs respectively. The ethyl acetate extract showed significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities, thus it can be considered as a potential candidate for analgesic and antiinflammatory activities. The presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids in ethyl acetate extract of Peganum harmala (Linn) seeds could be attributed for the claimed analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities.

ABSTRACT

Gokshura a well-known drug in Ayurveda which is extensively used in many disease conditions like dysuria, asthma, diabetes, cough, oedema, cardiac disorders etc. Tribulus terrestris (Family – Zygophyllaceae) is an official source of Gokshura as per API. Five species of genus Tribulus are found throughout India with a slight morphological difference. In this study, three different species of Tribulus genus from different regions were subjected for molecular characterization by RAPD method. Analysis showed that three different samples gave clearly similar banding pattern with each of the random primers used and 80% similarity between the three samples were observed when the results were subjected to band scoring and analysis with clustering. Even through the micromorpholgical observations showed differentiating characters in mature carpels and intrastaminal glands of the selected species.
