ABSTRACT

Jiinshihoto, a Kampo formulation described in the textbook, Wanbinhuichun, is well known as a suitable formulation for patients troubled by chronic cough with qi obstruction. The components of jiinshihoto have several effects including nourishing yin, clearing empty heat, replenishing qi, and improving digestive function. We report three cases with glossodynia and abnormal sensation in the throat which were treated successfully with jiinshihoto. We therefore recommend jiinshihoto for the treatment of glossodynia and abnormal sensation in the throat associated with signs of yin deficiency including thirst, dry mouth, and viscous sputum, and signs of qi obstruction such as a tympanic sound on the right side of the abdomen.

ABSTRACT

Laryngeal granulomas which grow in the rear of the vocal cords can be a refractory and recurrent condition, because of various pathogeneses and a lack of established treatment guidelines. We experienced a laryngeal granuloma case which recurred repeatedly, and was resistant to modern medicinal treatment. The laryngeal granuloma recurred after microlaryngosurgery. And though a second microlaryngosurgery and laser cauterization was done, followed by prescription of lansoprazole, tranilast, chlarithromycin and inhalation of fluticasone propionate, the laryngeal granuloma recurred once more. Thus, we tried Kampo medicines at the this time. Hangekobokuto, saishakurikkunshito and keikyososooushimbuto were stopped due to lack of efficacy on the ganuloma, and the Kampo formulation was changed to kairosan. Three weeks after changing formulation, the granuloma was no longer seen with laryngeal fiberscopy. And to-date, recurrence of the granuloma has not been confirmed. This case suggests that fatigue, body weight loss, bilateral Kyokyo-kuman (discomfort of the hypochondrium), bilateral excessive strain of abdominal muscles, pulsation of both the upper and lower navel, and tympanitic sound in upper abdomen may be clinical indications for kairosan.

ABSTRACT

The source of Jiinshihoto, which has been used for patients troubled by chronic cough with Ki obstruction, is Wanbinhuichun. We report on 8 cases with various chronic inflammatory diseases in the airway successfully treated with Jiinshihoto. They had similar symptoms, i. e., chronic coughing both dry and moist, and the abnormal sensations in the throat. Our experience with these cases suggests that tympanitic sound on right half side of the abdomen increase the accuracy of Jiinshihoto usage.

ABSTRACT

We prescribed Seisho-ekki-to for three bronchial asthma patients, with poor control of their attacks. Markers used to assess the efficacy of this formulation were sensations in the throat, palpitation and spontaneous sweating. All these markers improved rapidly, with Seisho-ekki-to administration. All three patients and several factors in common, namely; being middle-aged, having attacks that arise throughout the year, epigastric discomfort, fullness of the upper abdomen and pulsation near the umbilicus. Furthermore, a cessation or significant decrease in numbers of asthma attacks seen was brought about with Seisho-ekki-to medication. Up until now, Seisho-ekki-to has usually been used to treat summer heat syndrome. It appears, however, that Seisho-ekki-to may also be applied in the control of bronchial asthma, in the middle-aged.

ABSTRACT

The source of the herbal mixture named Jiin-koka-to is Wan bing hui chun. Jiin-koka-to has been used mainly as a decoction for the treatment of bronchitis and tuberculosis. The cases of bronchial asthma treated with Jiin-koka-to in this report had similar symptoms: abnormal sensations in the throat and irritation. We investigated the efficacy of Jiin-koka-to in 11 asthma patients having both symptoms. Improvements were observed in all patients; these improvements included reduction of peripheral eosinophil count and serum IgE, loss in quantity of prednisolone, increment of peak expiratory flow rate, and cessation or decrease of asthma attacks. Thus, it is possible that Jiin-koka-to is a controller rather than a reliever in the treatment of bronchial asthma. Abnormal sensations in the throat and irritation might be one of the indications for Jiin-koka-to.

ABSTRACT

The effectiveness of three Kampo formulas expected to be effective for AST (abnormal sensation in the throat) and AND (autonomic nervous dysfunction) was evaluated. The Kampo formulas used were Hange-koboku-to (Ban xia hou pu tang), Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to (Chai hu jia long gu mu li tang) and Saiboku-to (Chai pu tang). The subjects involved in this study were 165 patients who complained of AST and were classified by the Cornell Medical Index Health Questionnaire as having AND or AND+N (neurotic condition). The results were then compared with those obtained with Ethyl Loflazepate (an anti-anxiety drug), Tofisopam (a deriv-ative of 2, 3-benzodiazepines) and psychotherapy.
Therapy was considered ‘effective’ if a subjective 50% or greater reduction in AST was achieved. The evaluation after two weeks of each therapy revealed that Tofisopam was most effective in both the AND and AND+N type patients. The Kampo drugs seemed to be slightly superior or equal in effectiveness to Ethyl Loflazapate in the treatment of AND+N type patients, but not in the treatment of patients with AND alone.
