ABSTRACT

Introduction: Absence of external auricle predisposes anindividual to a great deal of psychological trauma alongwith functional complications. The conventional methodsof fabrication of auricular prosthesis by duplicating themorphology of the normal contralateral ear are timeconsuming, error-prone and very much subjective in terms ofquality.Case report: The present case report describes rehabilitationof a patient of traumatic anotia of left side with a custommade adhesive retained silicone prosthesis, developed withthe help of computer aided designing and rapid prototypingtechnology. Conclusion: Consistent good quality prosthesis may beobtained using advanced digital technologies that includeoptical scanning, computer-aided designing (CAD) and rapidprototyping (RP) which are more objective in nature.

ABSTRACT

Microtia is the abnormal development of the external ear that results in a malformed auricle. The deformity that results can range from mild distortion of the anatomic landmarks to the complete absence of the ear which is anotia. An otolaryngologist can expect to be called on to evaluate this defect several times in the average career. Although not every otolaryngologist will perform the complex surgical reconstruction of these malformations, one should be familiar with the aetiology, anatomy, medical management, and nonsurgical options available. The loss of an ear has a considerable psychological impact on an individual. Maxillofacial prostheses replace the lost body parts by using the silicone materials in order to alleviate these problems, prosthesis may be fabricated. This clinical report portrays a method to fabricate silicone auricular prosthesis for a patient who had congenital anotia. These prostheses support the patients physically as well as psychologically enhancing their confidence and social acceptance.

ABSTRACT

@#BACKGROUND: Microtia is often associated with hearing loss and patients typically require treatment for hearing impairment and surgical ear reconstruction. The occurrence of microtia is of public health importance in part due to the psychosocial sequelae, including the stigma associated with malformations of the ear and the burden of undergoing multiple surgeries In addition, greater than 90% of individuals with microtia experience conductive hearing loss on the affected side. Although children with microtia-anotia are at a greater risk of delayed language development and attention deficit disorders. METHODS: Our study has a 173 childrens from the UB city and countryside. 23 children has a bilateral microtia and anotia. 6 patient wearing BAHA soft band from 6 months age. 150 patients have an unilateral microtia. Microtia was found more commonly in males, unilateral and right sided. Even children with bilateral microtia may have wearing BAHA soft band before 6 months age. RESULTS: External ear malformations are more commonly found in males. Sex ratio 2:1. From other studies right ear malformations are more common in male children. In our study children who have bilateral ear abnormalities wearing BAHA softband and language therapy from 6 months age to able to have normal language development. Children who had surgical treatment and using hearing aid can have normal social life and increased quality of life. CONCLUSION: Early screening in children who have external ear malformation, monitoring language development, wearing BAHA softband from 2 months age who have bilateral ear malformation and one ear affected other one is normal children wear BAHA softband increases children speech and language development.

ABSTRACT

Goldenhar's Syndrome (oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia) is a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies that involves structures arising from the first and second branchial arches. In this report, a case of a male infant, with the features of hemi facial microsomia, anotia, vertebral anomalies, congenital facial nerve palsy and lagophthalmos is described. Although the syndrome itself is not uncommon, the presence of congenital facial nerve palsy, which has been reported in rare cases, prompted this case report.
