ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: The Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire developed by C. Rodriguez Martinez in 2005 was proved to be a valid instrument for asthma knowledge assessment for parents of children with asthma. 17 items were included in the questionnaire including their myths and beliefs, knowledge, and associated aspects. The objective of this study is to analyse the validity and reliability of the Malay version of the questionnaire. Methods: Forward-Backward translation method was used by language experts to obtain the Malay version of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was then given to twenty respondents at the Paediatric Institute Hospital Kuala Lumpur to ensure the clarity and relevance of the questionnaire as a pilot study. Subsequently, 60 respondents who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected to proceed with the reliability test of the Malay version questionnaire. The results were analysed with SPSS version 26.0. The reliability and internal consistency were confirmed by intra-class correlation and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results: There were 60 respondents to the questionnaire consisting of parents and caretaker who has child with asthma at the Institute of Paediatric Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The mean age of respondents was 34 ± 7.5year old. 91.7% of the respondents were female. The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.84. Conclusion: The Malay version of the Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire has a good degree of validity, reliability and is culturally acceptable equivalent to the original version.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: in the guidelines for the control of asthma in children and adolescents1, education is part of their management. Objectives: to evaluate the knowledge of asthma in teachers of primary and secondary education in the city of Córdoba. Determine if they consider their knowledge sufficient. Know the behavior of teachers before symptomatic students. Material and Method: descriptive and transversal study in teachers of schools in the city of Cordoba. The NAKQ2 questionnaire (Newcastle Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire) was applied and the current management was consulted regarding symptomatic students and if they considered their knowledge about Asthma to be sufficient. The survey was conducted from November 2018 to April 2019. Results: 265 questionnaires were analyzed. The average knowledge score on Asthma was 16 ± 5, for 31 items. It was detected that the presence of asthmatics in their environment increased their knowledge (p0.001) and 95% self-rated their information insufficient. 80% of teachers did not know if they had asthmatic students. 25.3% witnessed mild attacks: 98% expected improvement without intervention, 7.2% allowed self-medication without intervention, 12.1% supervised and administered the medication, 11.3% advised the health personnel and 13.2% communicated with relatives. 5.7% experienced severe crises, 0.8% expected improvement without intervention, 0.4% allowed self-medication without intervention, 2.6% supervised and administered medication, 3.4% advised health personnel and 3.8% called relatives. Conclusion: Low level of knowledge about Asthma in teachers of the City of Córdoba was observed. Therefore, it is necessary to design educational intervention programs for teachers to improve the management and control of asthma in students.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: High prevalence and poor control of asthma make its management a major public health issue worldwide, especially in developing countries. Optimum review of asthma management in the community is essential to improve asthma control. This study was conducted to investigate the quality of asthma management, knowledge about asthma and quality of life of asthma patients referred to a public tertiary care chest hospital in Delhi. Methods: Diagnosis of asthma was confirmed by symptoms and reversible spirometry in 50 referred patients on their first visit. Patients were interviewed using three questionnaires on quality of asthma management before visiting referral hospital, asthma knowledge and asthma quality of life (AQLQ). Correlation amongst quality of treatment, asthma quality of life, and asthma knowledge was also determined. Results: Findings revealed that only 60 per cent of patients were informed about their disease, and 10 per cent had undergone lung function tests previously. Only 44 per cent of patients were prescribed inhalers. None were provided with any educational material. Patients had poor knowledge of aetiology, pathophysiology, medication and how to assess the severity of their asthma. The mean scores in AQLQ indicated a moderate degree of impairment in quality of life. Interpretations & conclusions: This study provides evidence of unsatisfactory asthma management and patient-doctor interaction as patients had limited knowledge of asthma disease, its management and had poor quality of life as measured by a standardized questionnaire. Thus, there is need to implement suitable interventions to improve asthma management according to standard treatment guidelines in the community.
