ABSTRACT

Background: Several studies have pointed out the relationship between gender and personality in its various facets. The current study investigates if the personality traits of a person is associated with their gender. The rationale of the study is to understand what impact gender has on one’s personality. Methodology: A standardised survey was distributed to a sample of adolescents belonging to the age group of 16-21 years from Mumbai. Each person completed a different measure on the Big Five Personality traits. Women reported themselves to be higher in Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Warmth, and Openness to Feelings, whereas men were higher in Assertiveness and Openness to Ideas. The sample comprises of 50 men and 50 women each from the age group of 16-21 years. Results: Women scored comparatively higher on all the three scales which denotes women are more open to new experiences and new ideas, they are most likely to put others’ needs ahead of their own and cooperate rather than compete with each other. They experience negative emotions like fear, anxiety, guilt and shame intensely. Whereas men on the other hand are practical, conventional and focus on the concrete, they tend to avoid the unknown and follow traditional ways. They experience less empathy and are described as hostile, competitive and antagonists. Conclusion: Further studies on gender and personality are needed to elucidate the findings of the current study

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the relationship among five personality factors, negative life events and suicidal tendency of college students, so as to provide reference for college students' suicide prevention. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 885 college students in Xi'an city, Shaanxi province. A comprehensive college, a science and engineering college and a liberal arts college were selected respectively. Three questionnaires were applied to all subjects, including big five personality questionnaire, life event questionnaire and scale of adolescents' suicide tendency. Hierarchical regression model was adopted to analyzed the relationship of big five personality traits, negative life events and suicide tendency. Pearson correlation analysis and mediating effect test were conducted by using SPSS 20.0 software. Results:There was no significant interaction between gender and negative life events on suicidal tendency ( β=-0.03, t=-0.96, P>0.05). Conscientiousness( β=-0.12, t=-4.06, P<0.01), neuroticism ( β=0.24, t=7.54, P<0.01), agreeableness( β=-0.15, t=-3.65, P<0.01), extroversion ( β=-0.27, t=-8.56, P<0.01) and openness ( β=-0.12, t=-3.38, P<0.01)in Big Five personality had significant moderating effect on the relationship between negative life events and suicidal tendency. High conscientiousness, high agreeableness, high extroversion and high openness had protective effect on the relationship between negative life events and suicidal ideation. High neuroticism was a risk factor of the relationship between negative life events and suicidal tendency. Conclusion:The five factors of personality are closely related with negative life events and suicidal ideation. The five factors of personality can regulate the relationship between life events and suicidal tendency.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the personality portraits of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), its relationship with medication adherence and the influencing factors of medication adherence.@*METHODS@#T2DM patients from 22 community health service stations of 4 community health service centers in Tongzhou district and Shunyi district in Beijing were selected as the research objects. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect demographic information. The short version of Big Five personality scale was used to collect personality information, and latent profile analysis was used to explore their personality portraits. The medication adherence was evaluated by medication adherence scale, and the difference of medication adherence among the different personality portraits was explored by analysis of variance. The influencing factors of medication adherence were explored by the ordinal Logistic regression model.@*RESULTS@#In the study, 751 T2DM patients were included. Latent profile analysis showed that the T2DM patients in this study could be divided into four types of personality portraits, including introverted and stable type (42.7%), negative type (12.7%), anxiety type (15.3%) and active and responsible type (29.3%). Among them, 75 patients said that they did not use medicine or insulin, 5 patients were lack of data, and finally 671 patients with T2DM were included in the analysis about medication adherence. The analysis of variance showed that there was no significant difference in medication adherence between anxiety type (5.55±1.65) and negative type (5.94±1.53, P=0.089), but the medication adherence score of anxiety type was significantly lower than that of introverted and stable type (6.17±1.46, P=0.001) and active and responsible type (6.09±1.65, P=0.004). Anxiety type and negative type were seen as a whole in the ordinal Logistic regression model named anxiety and negative type. The results showed that compared with anxiety and negative type, the active and responsible type or introverted and stable type was the protective factor for good medication adherence (OR=1.567, 95%CI: 1.096-2.237; OR=1.774, 95%CI: 1.214-2.591), and the education level also affected the medication adherence.@*CONCLUSION@#T2DM can be classified into four types of personality portraits based on Big Five personality theory. The anxiety and negative type after the combination of anxiety type and negative type is the independent risk factor for poor medication adherence. In addition, education level is also the influencing factor of medication compliance.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In recent years, brief measures of the five personality factors have been developed; however, the practical gain of time provided by the brief versions may imply weaker psychometric properties of the instruments. To maintain adequate psychometric properties in the construction of brief scales, theoretical and empirical criteria should be used in the selection of items, and response biases such as acquiescence (AC) should be minimized. The term AC refers to people's tendency to agree with positive statements, regardless of their content. The main purpose of the present study is to develop a brief public domain instrument (30 items) to measure the five personality factors in the Latin American population, controlling the AC response bias. The sample consisted of 910 participants, 543 women (59.6 %) and 367 men (40.3 %), age range 15-80 years (M = 29.52; DT = 12.25) from the city of Córdoba, Argentina. For the validation process, a convergence study with the five NEO-FFI scales, an analysis of group differences according to the participants' sex and age, and a predictive validity study regarding recreational activities (drug use, irresponsibility, friendship, erudition/creativity, and communication) were performed. The results indicate that the IPIP-R-30 presents a five-factor factorial structure, adequate reliability indices of both internal consistency and temporal stability, evidence of convergent validity with the NEO-FFI scales, evidence of group differences as regards sex and age, and frequency predictive validity of different categories of specific activities. Thus, it can be concluded that the IPP-R-30 is a valid tool for assessing personality factors in our environment, with scores free of AC bias.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to obtain evidence of the convergent and factor validity of the Reduced Scale of Big Five Personality Factors (ER5FP), with 20 items, and of the Reduced Inventory of Big Five Personality Factors (IGFP-5R), with 32 items. The two Brazilian scales were administered to 554 participants aged 1669 years (M = 30.6, SD = 8.6). The measurement model of each instrument was tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Both scales showed an adequate adjustment of the measurement model to the data (root mean square error of approximation < .06; standardized root mean square residual < .06) after excluding a number of items. Correlations between the factors of both instruments were estimated. Moderate evidence of convergent validity was found for Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience (raw correlations ranging from .44 and .57, and disattenuated correlations from .60 to .80). For Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, weaker evidence was found (raw correlations of .33 and .29, and disattenuated correlations of .48 and .43, respectively).

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the big five personality characteristics of the first-episode, treatment-naive major depressive disorder. Method Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) was used to assess the personality. A comparison was conducted between 112 first-episode, treatment-naive major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and 99 sex-, age- and education level-matched healthy controls (HC). The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) was used to evaluate patients’symptom. Result Compared with HC, the neuroticism score in MDD group was significantly higher, while the extraversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness were significantly lower. Lo?gistic regression analysis showed that MDD was significantly associated with higher neuroticism (OR=1.106, 95%CI:1.029~1.189, P=0.006) and lower extraversion (OR=0.809, 95%CI: 0.733~0.893, P<0.001) and agreeableness (OR=0.870, 95%CI:0.794~0.953, P=0.003). Linear regression showed that the HAMD score was significantly associated with higher neuroticism (B=0.121, P=0.003). The onset age of MDD was significantly associated with conscientiousness (B=0.015, P=0.001). Conclusion This study confirms that the personality of MDD is different from HC. Higher neuroticism is an important personality facets in treatment-naive patients with first-episode MDD. The low conscientiousness might associate with early age of depression onset.

ABSTRACT

Aims: In this study, the probable relationships between the types and factors of the Five Factor Model of Personality (FFM), which is a contemporary personality model, and the Nine Types Temperament Model (NTTM), which is a new temperament model, were investigated. Separately, the power of some of the types of NTTM to predict the dimensions of FFM was evaluated, as well. Study Design: Cross-sectional survey. Place and Duration of Study: Bezmialem Vakıf University (BVU) Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic (Turkey) between June 2013 and January 2014. Methodology: The sampling of the research consists of 247 healthy volunteers. Materials of the research include the Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) and The Nine Type Temperament Scale (NTTS). Results: All types of NTTM showed a significant correlation along with at least one of the FFPI factors at the level of 0.40 and above. Furthermore, the types of NTTM were determined to have predicted the dimensions of the FFPI by 34% and above. Conclusion: Significant correlations were found between the types of NTTM and the FFM factors. The results are discussed in regards to how the differences in the conceptual approach can be understood and the area of use between NTTM and FFM.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship of life satisfaction with perceived social support and personality factors in 353 male and female students from the University of Concepcion (Chile). Results showed high levels of perceived social support and life satisfaction in this sample. Social support had significant positive relationships with life satisfaction. Life satisfaction had negative relationship with neuroticism and direct relationships with extraversion, conscientiousness and agreeableness. Social support and neuroticism were the main predictors of vital satisfaction, with social support having higher relative influence. Diverse explanatory factors for obtained results are proposed.

Objective:To explore the linear and nonlinear relation of personality to life satisfaction and de-pression in visual artists. Methods:Totally 132 visual artists were recruited, most of them focused on painting, sculpture and photography. The Mini International Personality Item Pool-Five-Factor Model Measure (Mini-IPIP), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were adopted to all subjects. Results:The Mini-IPIP neuroticismscores had positive predictability to CES-D scores (β=0.41),while the scores of agreeableness, conscientiousnessand extraversionhad negative pre-dictability to CES-D scores(β=-0.27,-0.23,-0.19).Only conscientiousnessscores had positive predictabil-ity (β = 0.25 ) to SWLS scores in terms of linear relationship between personality traits and life satisfaction.Meanwhile, both'neuroticism'and conscientiousnessscores had U curve relationship with SWLS scores (β=0.32,0.22)after linear effects were controlled. Conclusion:It suggests that personality traits in visual artists could explain depression symptoms and life satisfaction. However, pattern between personality and life satis-faction may be more complex.

ABSTRACT

The first factor of the Agreeableness Scale, cordiality, correlated significantly and positively with eight needs assessed by Factor Personality Inventory (Assistance, Intraception, Cuddling, Deference, Affiliation, Order, Permanence and Change). Other factors (pro-sociability and trust in people) did not correlate significantly with any of the needs assessed by the Factor Personality Inventory. Significant differences due to gender were found in relation to the needs intraception, deference and autonomy in the Factor Personality Inventory and cordiality in Agreeableness Scale, and in relation to age of participants differences no were found. Studies evaluating the remaining factors of the Big Five Personality Model are recommended, as well as greater age range of the sample...
