ABSTRACT

Abstract The present research aims to determine the antimicrobial efficacy of the mouthwashes based on cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), before aerosol producing dental procedures. A data search was performed during August 2021 in five databases MEDLINE (PubMed), SCOPUS, SCIELO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Google Scholar. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included based on the PICO question, comparing the efficacy of the mouthwashes based on cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), versus other mouthwashes and water, before aerosol producing dental procedures, papers in English, Spanish and Portuguese were included without time limits. The risk of the included studies was evaluated with the tool RoB 2.0. Number of registration PROSPERO N° CRD42021275982. 120 papers were obtained in the preliminary search, discarding those that didn't comply with the selection criteria, leaving only 3 studies. These papers reported the use of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) was effective for the reduction of bacteria during the ultrasonic prophylactic procedure. The use of CPC mouthwashes previous to the dental treatment with ultrasonic prophylaxis showed only antibacterial capacity.


Resumen El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo determinar la eficacia antimicrobiana de los colutorios a base de cloruro de Cetilpiridinio (CPC), previo a tratamientos dentales que generen aerosol. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica hasta agosto del 2021 en cinco bases de datos: MEDLINE (vía PubMed), SCOPUS, SCIELO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) y Google Scholar. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados (ECAs), basándose en la pregunta PICOS, que compare la eficacia del colutorio a base de cloruro de Cetilpiridinio (CPC) con otro colutorio, placebo o agua, previo a un tratamiento dental que genere aerosol, en los idiomas español, inglés o portugués y sin límite de tiempo. El riesgo de los estudios incluidos se evaluó con la herramienta RoB 2.0. Número de registro PROSPERO N° CRD42021275982. Se obtuvo un total de 120 artículos en la búsqueda preliminar, descartando aquellos que no cumplían con los criterios de selección, quedando sólo 3articulos. Estos artículos informaron que el uso de CPC es efectivo para la reducción de bacterias durante el procedimiento de profilaxis con ultrasonido. El uso de los enjuagues bucales a base de CPC previo al tratamiento dental de profilaxis con ultrasonido sólo tiene eficacia antibacteriana.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCCIÓN: En la actualidad la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) como una de sus metas proyectadas al 2030 es que los alimentos sean inocuos, con seguridad alimentaria, nutritiva y suficiente, debido a que en los últimos años se ha incrementado el número de casos de Enfermedades Transmitidas por Alimentos (ETAs). La inocuidad de los alimentos es un principio básico de salud y como característica intrínseca de un alimento es que el mismo no debe causar daño a la salud. OBJETIVO: describir la importancia de la inocuidad alimentaria y los microorganismos patógenos más frecuentes que se presentan en los alimentos. METODOLOGÍA: se realizó una revisión narrativa conformada de artículos científicos a partir del año 2019 al 2023. RESULTADOS: los microoganismos que frecuentemente son causantes de las ETAs son: Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Hepatitis A, Vibrio cholerae, Listeria monocytogenes, ocasionando a nivel mundial elevados casos de diarreas relacionadas directamente con alimentos y agua contaminada, y que actualmente van en incremento. CONCLUSIÓN: las principales causas de las ETAs son por el aumento del comercio internacional de los alimentos contaminados, así como el incremento en la migración de aquellas personas que estén infectadas favoreciendo la propagación, reemergencia y aparición de microorganismos patógenos en alimentos contaminados por las malas prácticas de higiene, con la capacidad de generar infecciones, intoxicaciones y brotes en la población. Por lo anterior los organismos gubernamentales a nivel mundial, nacional y local establecen estrategias para abatir esta problemática de salud pública, pero son insuficientes, debiendo reforzar las acciones concretas de prevención y promoción.


INTRODUCTION: Due to the number of cases of Foodborne Diseases (ETAs) in recent years, the United Nations (UN) currently establishes as one of its goals for 2030 that food be safe, secure, nutritious, and sufficient. Food safety is a basic requirement, and an intrinsic characteristic of a food is that it should not negatively impact health. OBJECTIVE: to describe the importance of food safety and identify the most common pathogenic microorganisms that occur in food. Methodology: a narrative review was carried, out consisting of scientific articles from 2019 to 2023. RESULTS: the microorganisms that frequently cause ETAs are: Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Hepatitis A, Vibrio cholerae, Listeria monocytogenes, which cause frequent cases of diarrhea worldwide due to contaminated food and water, and which are currently increasing. CONCLUSION: the main causes of ETAs are the increase in international trade in contaminated foods, and the increase in the migration of people who are infected. Poor hygiene in food handling practices favor the contamination, spread, re-emergence and appearance of pathogenic microorganisms in foods, with the capacity to generate infections, poisonings and outbreaks in the population. Government agencies at the global, national, and local levels establish strategies to combat this public health problem, but they are insufficient, and specific prevention and promotion actions must be reinforced.

ABSTRACT

Radionuclide-contaminated wounds are common in medical response to nuclear emergencies, which have different manifestations in different types of accidents. Medical treatment is the key part of the response. Based on the drill experience gained from medical response to nuclear emergencies, the authors summarize the research advances in radionuclide-contaminated wounds in recent years, mainly involving the biokinetic characteristics, medical response, surgical debridement, and prevention and treatment of internal contamination of radionuclide-contaminated wounds; the authors summarize the key points of technical operations and provide suggestions on improvements in the drills. The authors believe that medical treatment of radionuclide-contaminated wounds requires highly compatible integration of the practical skills from clinical medicine and radiological knowledge; emergency response, surgical debridement, and prevention and treatment of internal contamination all together constitute an integrated rescue and treatment strategy with internal logic correlations. However, targeted improvements are needed to achieve desired effects in the drills.

ABSTRACT

In intensive beef cattle production systems, silage, corn, soy bean, and their coproducts are commonly used as feed. However, these ingredients are highly susceptible to contamination by fungi and mycotoxins, which may lead to immunological challenges and reduce animal production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of mycotoxin contamination of diet on intake, digestibility, and performance of heifers. Twenty non-pregnant (Nellore) heifers (age, >18 months; initial body weight, 348±30 kg) were used and randomly distributed in two treatments: (1) control (non-contaminated diet) and (2) zearalenone-contaminated diet (300 ppb). The diet comprised 70% corn silage and 30% concentrate. Individual dry matter intake and digestibility were estimated using external and internal markers. Heifer body weight was evaluated every week without fasting to calculate performance. The experimental design was completely randomized. Each animal was considered one experimental unit. Assumptions were tested for variance analyses (error normality, independence of errors, and homogeneity of variances) (p<0.05). There were no differences in dry matter intake (p=0.96) and digestibility (p=0.62). Performance (kg/day) did not vary as a function of zearalenone ingestion (p=0.68). Therefore, contamination of diet with 300 ppb zearalenone did not affect the intake, digestibility, and performance of feedlot-finished heifers.

ABSTRACT

The comparative study of poultry wastes- and HBB5 biosurfactant-mediated polyaromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation in sediment polluted with crude oil were investigated. The experiments were carried out for a period of 28 days by monitoring pH, nitrate, phosphate, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and microbiological parameters using standard procedures. The pH values obtained ranged between 6.21 and 6.93 in days 1 and 28 for the most effective treatment recipes. Generally, there was depletion in the concentrations of nitrate and phosphate for all set ups, but the most effective recipe witnessed highest reduction. For the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the recipe with highest limiting nutrients depletion also recorded the most hydrocarbon loss, and yet highest increase in density of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria and fungi. The sample containing polluted sediment + poultry wastes + HBB5 biosurfactant recorded PAH values of 1932.6472ppm on day 1 and 481.2272ppm on day 28. Total hydrocarbon-utilizing bacterial counts ranged from 1.48×104 cfu/g to 9.70×106 cfu/g, while hydrocarbon-utilizing fungal counts ranged between 2.30×103 cfu/g and 3.90×105 cfu/g. From the results obtained, poultry wastes combined with HBB5 biosurfactant recorded the highest efficiency in the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments, and HBB5 biosurfactant in isolation recorded higher degradation efficiency for polyaromatic hydrocarbons than the degradation effect mediated by poultry wastes alone. It is therefore recommended that a combination of surface-active agent, nutrient amendment source and viable microbial biomass be adopted and employed as potent recipe for the degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in crude oil-contaminated sediments.

ABSTRACT

This is a literature review with the objective of presenting scientific evidence about the therapeutic importance of the use of Anacardium humile for the treatment of infected skin wounds. Retrospective and analytical study carried out from 1999 to 2021, in the Bireme, UpToDate, Pubmed and Scielo databases. The association of the descriptors “Phytotherapy” was used; “Cerrado and Pantanal Plants”; “Wounds contaminated by bacteria”; “elastic fibers”. Of the 248 articles analyzed, 36 were included in the review because they met the inclusion criteria. Among the results, it was evidenced that the conventional treatments, although effective (the gold standard being Sulfadiazine 1% silver), present toxicity to human keratinocytes and fibroblasts, with this, it is concluded that further research will be necessary to prove the effectiveness of new treatment options or association of herbal medicines with treatment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify potentially pathogenic microorganisms (Listeria innocua, L. seeligeri, L. ivanovii, L. monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and several virulence genes) in unpasteurized cheese production in the northeastern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Listeria species were detected in 68 (64.14%) out of 106 samples of bovine feces, swabs from milkers' and cheese handlers' hands, milking buckets, raw milk, whey, water, cheese processing surface,s and utensils. All the samples collected at one farm were contaminated with Listeria spp. L. innocua, L. seeligeri, L. ivanovii, or L. monocytogenes were not detected in the samples collected in this study. A set of 391 Staphylococcus spp. isolates were obtained in these samples, from which 60 (15.31%) were identified as S. aureus using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). S. aureus carrying virulence genes (eta, hlg, seg, seh, sei) were detected in milk, in swabs from cheese handler's hands, whey, milk, sieves, buckets, and cheese. The hlg gene (encodes gamma hemolysin) was detected in all the S. aureus isolates. These findings show that poor hygienic practice is associated with a higher risk of pathogenic bacteria in milk or cheese, providing useful information for public health authorities to increase food safety surveillance and prevent the dissemination of pathogens.


O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar microrganismos potencialmente patogênicos (Listeria innocua, L. seeligeri, L. ivanovii, L. monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus e diversos genes de virulência) na produção de queijos de leite cru na região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Listeria foram detectadas em 68 (64,14%) das 106 amostras obtidas de fezes bovinas, suabes das mãos de ordenhadores e queijeiros, baldes, leite cru, soro, água, superfícies e utensílios da produção de queijos. Todas as amostras coletadas em uma fazenda estavam contaminadas com Listeria spp. L. innocua, L. seeligeri, L. ivanovii, e L. monocytogenes não foram detectadas nas amostras coletadas nesse estudo. Um conjunto de 391 isolados de Staphylococcus spp. foram obtidos das amostras, e desses 60 (15,31%) foram identificados como S. aureus pela PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). S. aureus contendo genes de virulência (eta, hlg, seg, seh, sei) foram detectados em leite, mãos dos ordenhadores, soro, utensílios e queijos. O gene hlg (gama-hemolisina)foi detectado em todos os isolados de S. aureus.Esses resultados demonstram que práticas inadequadas de higiene estão associadas com um maior risco da presença de bactérias patogênicas no leite e queijos crus, fornecendo informações para as autoridades de saúde pública para incrementarem a vigilância e prevenirem a disseminação de patógenos.

RESUMO A representatividade da amostragem é fundamental para embasar a tomada de decisão, uma vez que a heterogeneidade da matriz é o principal fator para incerteza dos dados nos estudos de gerenciamento de áreas contaminadas. Neste estudo, coletaram-se 112 amostras de solo superficial em malha quadrada de 1 x 1 m, em uma área 15 x 6 m, no campus regional de Resende da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Anteriormente, no terreno funcionaram empresas de produção de filmes radiográficos e purificação de prata metálica. As amostras de solo foram analisadas por pXRF, método de screening para metais. Com base nos dados levantados, calculou-se, por meio de métodos estatísticos, a quantidade de amostras que permitiriam uma caracterização representativa da área, considerando um erro relativo de 20% para dois intervalos de confiança: 95 e 80%. As análises indicaram concentrações superiores aos valores de referência para os parâmetros prata, mercúrio, chumbo, selênio e zinco. Os resultados de mercúrio possivelmente referem-se a ruído espectral, não estando relacionados ao histórico de uso e ocupação. Os coeficientes de variação das concentrações dos elementos analisados variaram de 132 a 225%. Considerando uma distribuição lognormal, calcularam-se 76 amostras para o maior intervalo de confiança e 53 para o menor. Isso seria o equivalente a transectos com espaçamentos de 1,47 e 2,11 m. Os resultados ratificam a necessidade de investigações de alta resolução nas áreas fonte, conforme recomendado pela Decisão de Diretoria da Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo nº 038/2017/C (DD-038).


ABSTRACT The representativeness of the sampling is fundamental to support decisions, since the heterogeneity of the matrix is the main factor for data uncertainty in contaminated areas management studies. In this study, 112 surface soil samples were collected in a square mesh of 1 x 1 m, in an area of 15 x 6 m, at the Campus Regional de Resende (CRR) of Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Previously, companies of radiographic films production and metallic silver purification operated in this area. The soil samples were analyzed by pXRF, a screening method for metals detection. Based on the data collected, the number of samples that would allow a representative characterization of the area was calculated, using statistical methods, considering a relative error of 20% for 80 and 95% confidence intervals. The analyses indicated concentrations higher than the reference values for the parameters silver, mercury, lead, selenium, and zinc. The results of mercury possibly refer to spectral noise, not being related to the history of use and occupancy. The coefficient of variation of the soil obtained ranged from 132 to 225%. Considering a lognormal distribution, 76 samples were calculated for the highest confidence interval and 53 for the lowest. This would be the equivalent of transects with spacings of approximately 1.47 and 2.11 m. The results confirm the need for high resolution investigations in the source areas, as recommended by the Executive Board Decision of CETESB No. 038/2017/C (DD-038).

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da utilização de duas técnicas de investigação geoambiental em alta resolução: investigação passiva de vapores do solo e investigação com o uso de Membrane Interface Probe (MIP), em uma área contaminada por hidrocarbonetos de petróleo, localizada no município de Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. O processo de gerenciamento ambiental da área iniciou-se em 2012 e contemplou as etapas preconizadas nas legislações vigentes. Os resultados obtidos a partir das investigações tradicionais foram insuficientes para a compreensão das características físicas e geoquímicas necessária para o sucesso das fases de diagnóstico e, consequentemente, da remediação. Portanto, duas investigações em alta resolução foram conduzidas com o objetivo de refinar o modelo conceitual de forma a atender adequadamente à Resolução CONAMA nº 420/09 e à Resolução CONEMA nº 44/12, permitindo ações futuras mais eficientes. A investigação passiva de vapores do solo utilizou amostradores compostos por materiais adsorventes granulares, encapsulados em uma membrana microporosa hidrofóbica e quimicamente inerte que permite a difusão dos vapores presentes no meio. Os resultados representam qualitativamente a presença de contaminação no subsolo. O MIP é uma ferramenta de direct push com medição em tempo real, que detecta a presença da contaminação tanto em meios insaturados quanto saturados inconsolidados. A partir dos resultados integrados, foi possível constatar que a distribuição de compostos orgânicos voláteis (volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) em água subterrânea ocorre de forma descontínua ao longo da área, sendo possível identificar cinco hotspots distintos e suas diferentes áreas fonte, incluindo uma região com presença de fase livre.


ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of two high-resolution site characterization (HRSC) techniques: passive investigation of soil vapors and investigation using Membrane Interface Probe (MIP), in an area contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbon, located in the municipality of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. The environmental management process in the area began in 2012 and contemplated the stages recommended by the current legislation. The results obtained from the traditional investigations were insufficient for the understanding of the physical and geochemical aspects for the success of the diagnostic phases and, consequently, the remediation phase. Therefore, it was conducted two high-resolution investigations with the objective of improving the conceptual model in order to comply adequately with CONAMA Resolution 420/09 and CONEMA Resolution 44/12, allowing future actions more efficient. The soil gas passive investigation used samplers composed of granular adsorbent materials, encapsulated in a hydrophobic and chemically inert microporous membrane that allows the diffusion of the vapors present in the media. The results qualitatively represent the presence of contamination in the subsoil. MIP is a direct push tool with real-time measurement, which detect the presence of contamination in both unsaturated and saturated media. From the integrated results, it was possible to verify that the distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwater occurs in a discontinuous way throughout the area. It was possible to identify five distinct hotspots and their different source areas, including a region with the presence of free-phase.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO O presente trabalho consiste na avaliação da existência de risco e sua quantificação em casos de vazamentos de derivados do petróleo em uma refinaria localizada na Região Sudeste do Brasil. A área apresenta solo subsuperficial e água subterrânea contaminados por hidrocarbonetos de petróleo e outras substâncias em consequência do funcionamento de uma refinaria. Foram consideradas as vias de exposição por inalação aos contaminantes presentes nesses dois meios. A quantificação do risco de câncer e do quociente de perigo foi realizada para cada substância química, permitindo verificar que, para a exposição a água subterrânea contaminada, não houve efeito carcinogênico e não carcinogênico para os compostos analisados por meio da via de inalação. Já para a exposição a solo subsuperficial contaminado, verificou-se que todos os elementos detectados apresentaram riscos carcinogênicos para ambas as condições analisadas (ambiente aberto e fechado) e ambos os receptores (trabalhadores e comercial). Os elementos benzeno, tolueno, etilbenzeno, o-xileno e m-xileno apresentaram risco não carcinogênico para ambientes fechados em solo subsuperficial contaminado. Em ambientes abertos, somente o xileno,m- não apresentou risco não carcinogênico. Para receptores trabalhadores, somente o benzeno apresentou risco não carcinogênico. Destaca-se a grande importância do gerenciamento de risco para posterior recuperação dessa área afetada.


Abstract The present study was an assessment and risk quantification of derivatives from oil spill at a refinery located in the Southeast of Brazil. The area presents subsurface soil and groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons and other substances from the refinery. Inhalation exposure routes have been evaluated due to the presence of contaminants in the affected area. Risk quantification and hazard ratio were performed for each chemical substance, allowing to verify that, for exposure from contaminated groundwater, there was no carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effect considering the inhalation route. As for exposure to contaminated subsurface soil, all the elements were detected as having the carcinogenic risk for both analyzed conditions (open and closed environments), and both receptors (worker and commercial). The elements Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, o-Xylene, and m-Xylene, have presented a non-carcinogenic risk for closed environments from contaminated subsurface soil. In open environments, only m-Xylene did not present non-carcinogenic risk. For the workers receptors, only Benzene has presented a non-carcinogenic risk. It might be highlighted the importance of risk management for the subsequent recovery of this affected area.

ABSTRACT

Continuous occurrence of heavy metals is a major cause of environmental pollution due to its toxic effects. At minimum concentrations, these metals are highly reactive and can gather in the food chains and food web, causing major dangers to public health concerns. Soil samples were collected from Paharang drain, Faisalabad. Cadmium tolerant bacteria were isolated and evaluated for their MIC against Cd. The isolated bacterial strain GCFSD01 showed MIC value upto 30 mM/L. The bacterial strain with the highest resistance against Cd was selected for further study. Molecular characterization of bacterial isolate GCFSD01 was performed by 16S rRNA which confirmed it as Bacillus cereus. Optimum growth conditions of bacterial strain were also evaluated. Strain GCFSD01 showed optimum growth at pH 7 and 37 °C temperature. Our result revealed that B. cereus strain GCFSD01 reduced 61.3% Cd after 48 hrs. Multiple metal tolerance and Cd reduction by B. cereus indicate its potential for further use for decontamination of polluted soil.


A ocorrência contínua de metais pesados é uma das principais causas de poluição ambiental devido aos seus efeitos tóxicos. A contaminação por metais pesados representa um grande risco para todas as formas de vida encontradas no meio ambiente. Em concentrações mínimas, esses metais são altamente reativos e podem se acumular nas cadeias alimentares e na cadeia alimentar, causando grandes perigos às preocupações com a saúde pública. Amostras de solo foram coletadas no esgoto de Paharang, Faisalabad. Bactérias tolerantes ao cádmio foram isoladas da amostra coletada pelo método da placa de ágar. As colônias separadas individuais selecionadas foram avaliadas quanto às suas concentrações inibitórias mínimas contra Cd. A cepa bacteriana isolada GCFSD01 apresentou valores de CIM de 30 mM/L. A colônia bacteriana que apresentou maior resistência contra o Cd foi selecionada para identificação. Após seleção da maior colônia bacteriana resistente ao Cd, coloração de Gram e diferentes testes bioquímicos foram realizados para a caracterização da bactéria isolada. A caracterização molecular do isolado bacteriano GCFSD01 foi realizada por PCR 16S rRNA confirmando a presença de Bacillus cereus. Após a identificação molecular, as condições ótimas de crescimento da cepa bacteriana também foram verificadas. A cepa GCFSD01 apresentou crescimento ótimo em pH 7 e temperatura de 37 °C. Nosso resultado revelou que a cepa de B. cereus GCFSD01 reduziu 61,3% de Cd após 48 horas. A tolerância a múltiplos metais e a redução de Cd por B. cereus indicam seu potencial para uso posterior na descontaminação do solo poluído.

ABSTRACT

With continuous improvement of people's living standards, great efforts have been paid to environmental protection. Among those environmental issues, soil contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons has received widespread concerns due to the persistence and the degradation difficulty of the pollutants. Among the various remediation technologies, in-situ microbial remediation enhancement technologies have become the current hotspot because of its low cost, environmental friendliness, and in-situ availability. This review summarizes several in-situ microbial remediation technologies such as bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and integrated remediation, as well as their engineering applications, providing references for the selection of in-situ bioremediation technologies in engineering applications. Moreover, this review discusses future research directions in this area.

ABSTRACT

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent pollutants that are widely distributed in the environment. Due to their stable structure and poor degradability, PAHs exhibit carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic toxicity to the ecological environment and organisms, thus increasing attentions have been paid to their removals and remediation. Green, safe and economical technologies are widely used in the bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. This article summarizes the present status of PAHs pollution in soil of China from the aspects of origin, migration, fate, and pollution level. Meanwhile, the types of microorganisms and plants capable of degrading PAHs, as well as the underlying mechanisms, are summarized. The features of three major bioremediation technologies, i.e., microbial remediation, phytoremediation, and joint remediation, are compared. Analysis of the interaction mechanisms between plants and microorganisms, selection and cultivation of stress-resistant strains and plants, as well as safety and efficacy evaluation of practical applications, are expected to become future directions in this field.

@#Introduction: A dilemma arises when a bone graft or fracture fragment is accidentally dropped on the operation theatre floor and becomes contaminated. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of simple and readily available antiseptic solutions in disinfecting contaminated bones. Materials and methods: This experimental study involved 225 bone specimens prepared from discarded bone fragments during a series of 45 knee and hip arthroplasty surgeries. The bone fragments were cut into five identical cubes and were randomly assigned to either control (positive or negative), or experimental groups (0.5% chlorhexidine, 10% povidone-iodine or 70% alcohol). The control negative was to determine pre-contamination culture. All bone specimens, except the control negative group were uniformly contaminated by dropping on the operation theatre floor. Subsequently, the dropped bone specimens except for the control positive group, were disinfected by immersing in a respective antiseptic solution for 10 minutes, before transported to the microbiology laboratory for incubation. Results: The incidence of a positive culture from a dropped bone fragment was 86.5%. From the 37 specimens sent for each group, the incidence of positive culture was 5.4% (2 specimens) after being disinfected using chlorhexidine, 67.6% (25 specimens) using povidone-iodine and 81.1% (30 specimens) using alcohol. Simple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that chlorhexidine was significantly effective in disinfecting contaminated bones (p-value <0.001, odd ratio 0.009). Povidone-iodine and alcohol were not statistically significant (p-value 0.059 and 0.53, respectively). Organisms identified were Bacillus species and coagulase negative Staphylococcus. No gram-negative bacteria were isolated. Conclusion: A total of 0.5% chlorhexidine is effective and superior in disinfecting contaminated bones.

ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of mycotoxins on the performance of horses through physiological parameters, and hematology and serum biochemistry analyses. The essay lasted 40 days, with 12 days for adaptation and 28 days of experimentation. In the experimental stage, the horses were distributed in a completely randomized design, with three treatments with four animals each. The treatments used were 0 (control), 50 ppb and 100 ppb of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) added to a concentrate in a basal diet. The basal diet contained mycotoxins from feedstuffs naturally contaminated. The exercise test was performed over the 21th day of the experimental stage. The exercise consisted in an interval training test with a warm-up of 17 mins at a trot followed by three gallops of 450m/min. The heart rate was monitored between the gallops. Before the exercise test and immediately after the third gallop, the physiological and blood parameters were evaluated, and continued up to 48 hours after the exercise. The results of the physiological, hematological and biochemical parameters were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and compared by the Tukey test at 5% of significance. The presence of AFB1 in the diet influenced the alkaline phosphatase activity, which presented higher values in horses fed diet with inclusion of 100 ppb AFB1, suggesting a hepatotoxic activity associated with the others mycotoxins naturally present in the feedstuffs.(AU)


Esta pesquisa foi conduzida para avaliar o efeito de micotoxinas no desempenho de equinos com avaliações fisiológicas e análises hematológicas e da bioquímica sérica. O ensaio durou 40 dias, com 12 dias de adaptação e 28 dias de experimentação. Na fase experimental, os equinos foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em três tratamentos, com quatro animais cada. Os tratamentos utilizados foram 0 (controle), 50 ppb e 100 ppb de Aflatoxina B1 (AFB1) adicionada ao concentrado de uma dieta basal. A dieta basal continha alimentos naturalmente contaminados por micotoxinas. O teste de desempenho foi executado no 21º dia da fase experimental por meio de teste intervalado consistindo em aquecimento ao trote por 17 minutos, seguido de três galopes de 450m/min. A frequência cardíaca (FC) foi monitorada entre os galopes. Antes do exercício e imediatamente após o terceiro galope, os parâmetros fisiológicos e sanguíneos foram avaliados e continuaram sendo monitorados até 48 horas após o exercício. Os resultados dos parâmetros fisiológicos, hematológicos e bioquímicos foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA) e comparados pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de significância. A presença de AFB1 na dieta influenciou a atividade da fosfatase alcalina, que apresentou valores mais elevadas na dieta com inclusão de 100 ppb de AFB1, sugerindo uma atividade hepatotóxica associada às outras micotoxinas naturalmente presentes nos alimentos.(AU)

ABSTRACT

We wanted to evaluate the occurrence of wound dehiscence in class III and class IV wounds, that are contaminated, with an interrupted, far-near near-far technique (Smead Jones technique) of midline abdominal wound closure and study the occurrence of wound dehiscence in patients requiring laparotomy having high risk / co-morbid states. MethodsA total of 100 cases was selected and abdominal wound closure was done by Smead Jones technique using polypropylene suture No. 1. The Smead Jones sutures are double loop far-near, near-far applied to linea alba. All the patients were started on intravenous antibiotics. The wound was managed by daily antiseptic dressings. Postoperatively, the patients were followed up daily for 10 days and then once every 15 days up to 6 weeks to check for any disruption in suture line. ResultsAll patients were operated under general anaesthesia. The incision used was vertical midline. Majority of the cases were perforation peritonitis and intestinal obstruction (malignant or tubercular). Out of 100 patients, 76 patients had dirty wound, 10 had contaminated and 14 patients had clean contaminated wounds. Out of 100 patients, 2 patients had wound dehiscence. Dehiscence was observed on 7th post-operative day in one patient who was a case of perforation peritonitis due to duodenal ulcer perforation, who presented late in emergency after four days of symptoms. Secondary suturing was done after proper build up and was discharged on 16th post-operative day of his index surgery. ConclusionsFrom the present study, it can be concluded that the technique of closure of contaminated and dirty wounds is an important factor in the final outcome of the emergency laparotomy. In such cases burst abdomen can be reduced using Smead Jones (far-near near-far) interrupted technique of midline abdomen wound closure using non-absorbable polypropylene suture.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar, de forma crítica, a legislação brasileira que regulamenta o tema das áreas contaminadas. A legislação paulista também foi avaliada pelo fato de o Estado de São Paulo ter sido o pioneiro no enfrentamento do problema. A metodologia utilizada nesta pesquisa foi a bibliográfica de cunho qualitativo, com utilização de doutrina nacional e internacional, bem como sítios da internet. Concluiu-se que é urgente que se chegue a um consenso nacional sobre o conceito de solo; que as legislações nacional e paulista, ao adotarem critérios e metodologias de investigação próprios de países desenvolvidos, deixam de conformar a realidade e as especificidades brasileiras; que é essencial a participação da comunidade envolvida em todas as etapas do processo de remediação; que a tomada de decisão não deve ser realizada apenas com base nos valores orientadores, mas na realização de análises detalhadas de risco ecológico e à saúde humana no local contaminado.


ABSTRACT This study aimed to critically examine the Brazilian legislation that regulates the theme of contaminated areas. The legislation of São Paulo State was also assessed because this state was the pioneer in facing the problem. This study's methodology involves a qualitative overview of the bibliography, using both international and national legal doctrine, as well as websites. It was concluded that a national consensus regarding the concept of soil is required; the Brazilian and São Paulo State legislations, by adopting rules and guidelines established in the developed countries, failed to disregard Brazilian reality and specificities; the participation of the community involved at all stages of the remediation process is essential; the decision-making should not be based solely on the generic quality soil standards, but also on the ecological and human health risk analyses at a specific contaminated site.

ABSTRACT: The process of identifying a contaminated area involves a preliminary assessment consisting of chemical analysis and comparison with guideline values. In Brazil, these values are included in the CONAMA Resolution no. 420/2009, based on chemical analysis and phytotoxicity. The objective of this research was to evaluate the ecotoxicity of copper in two natural soils in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a Haplic Planosol (sandy) and a Red-Yellow Argisol (medium texture), to verify if the values established by the legislation offer protection to the soil fauna. Lethality and reproduction tests were performed with Eisenia andrei worms and Folsomia candida springtails. Results indicated copper values in Planosol as LC50 435 mg kg 1 and EC50 29 mg kg 1 for E. Andrei and LC10 137 mg kg 1 and EC50 117 mg kg 1 for F. candida. In Argisol, these results were LC50 690 mg kg 1 and EC50 61 mg kg 1 for E. andrei, and LC10 42 mg kg 1 and EC50 138 mg kg 1 for F. candida. Values reported are lower than the research value (200 mg kg-1) established by the CONAMA resolution 420/09, indicating that concentrations lower than the limit values may affect these organisms, depending on the type of soil. Worms were more sensitive than springtails to copper contamination, and sandy soil was more susceptible to ecotoxicity due to copper contamination, probably due to the greater bioavailability of the metal. Results of such ecotoxicity tests should be considered in the development of soil guideline values.


RESUMO: O processo de identificação de uma área contaminada envolve uma avaliação preliminar que consiste em análise química e comparação com valores orientadores. No Brasil, esses valores constam na Resolução CONAMA no 420/2009, baseados em análises químicas e fitotoxicidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ecotoxicidade do cobre em dois solos naturais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, um Planossolo Háplico (arenoso) e um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo (textura média), para verificar se os valores estabelecidos pela legislação oferecem proteção à fauna do solo. Foram realizados ensaios de letalidade e de reprodução com minhocas da espécie Eisenia andrei e com colêmbolos da espécie Folsomia candida. Os resultados indicaram no Planossolo valores de cobre para E. andrei de CL50 435 mg kg-1 e CE50 29 mg kg-1 e para F. candida CL10 137 mg kg-1 e EC50 117 mg kg-1. No Argissolo esse resultado foi para E. andrei CL50 690 mg kg-1 e CE50 61 mg kg-1, e para F. candida CL10 42 mg kg-1 e CE50 138 mg kg-1. Os valores encontrados são menores que o valor de investigação (200 mg kg-1) estabelecidos pela resolução 420/09 do CONAMA, indicando que concentrações menores do que os valores-limite podem afetar esses organismos, a depender do tipo de solo. As minhocas mostraram-se mais sensíveis que os colêmbolos à contaminação por cobre, e o solo arenoso mostrou-se mais suscetível a apresentar ecotoxicidade diante de uma contaminação por cobre, devida, provavelmente, à maior biodisponibilidade do metal. Os ensaios de ecotoxicidade devem ser considerados no desenvolvimento de valores orientadores para solos.

Microbial community structure of crude petroleum oil (CP)- and refined petroleum oil (RP)-contaminated soil wasinvestigated. The taxonomical and functional diversity of such soils can be a great source of information about microbialcommunity and genes involved in petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) degradation. In this study, microbial diversity of soilscontaminated by RP from urban biome of Pune, India, and CP from agricultural biome of Gujarat, India, were assessed by16S rRNA amplicon sequencing on Illumina MiSeq platform. Association between the soil microbial community and thephysicochemical parameters were investigated for their potential role. In RP- and CP-contaminated soils, the microbiomeanalysis showed Proteobacteria as most dominant phylum followed by Actinobacteria. Interestingly, Firmicutes were mostprevailing in a CP-contaminated sample while they were least prevailing in RP-contaminated soils. Soil moisture content,total organic carbon and organic nitrogen content influenced the taxa diversity in these soils. Species richness was more inRP as compared to CP soils. Further prediction of metagenome using PICRUSt revealed that the RP and CP soils containmicrobial communities with excellent metabolic potential for PHC degradation. Microbial community contributing to genesessential for soil health improvement and plant growth promotion was also gauged. Our analysis showed promising resultsfor future bioaugmentation assisted phytoremediation (BAP) strategies for treating such soils.

Background: Microbial community analysis of electronic waste (e-waste)-polluted environments is of interest to understand the effect of toxic e-waste pollutants on the soil microbial community and to evaluate novel microorganisms resisting the toxic environment. The present study aims to investigate the bacterial community structure in soils contaminated with e-waste from various sites of Loni and Mandoli (National Capital Region (NCR), India) where e-waste dumping and recycling activities are being carried out for many years. Results: Interferences to soil metagenomic DNA extraction and PCR amplification were observed because of the presence of inhibiting components derived from circuit boards. Whole-metagenome sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform showed that the most abundant phyla were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Deltaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were the most common classes under Proteobacteria. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene showed that e-waste contamination altered the soil bacterial composition and diversity. There was a decrease in the number of predominant bacterial groups like Proteobacteria and Firmicutes but emergence of Actinobacteria in the contaminated soil samples. Conclusions: This is the first report describing the bacterial community structure of composite soil samples of ewaste-contaminated sites of Loni and Mandoli, Delhi NCR, India. The findings indicate that novel bacteria with potential bioremediating properties may be present in the e-waste-contaminated sites and hence need to be evaluated further.
