ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The importance and relevance of e-learning courses in medicine and health sciences has increased significantly in the last decade. Despite this, there are few published teaching experiences of e-learning histology courses in the literature worldwide. The histology course we designed was structured on the Moodle platform as a learning management system, and the content was proposed in a synchronous (zoom) and asynchronous (recordings) format. We also included the use of free virtual microscopy tools. This study aimed to investigate the impact of an e-learning histology course on the satisfaction and performance of medical, nursing and midwifery students. The sample included 424 Chilean medical, nursing, and midwifery students from two cohorts. A Likert-type survey was administered at the end of the course. We performed exploratory analysis and ordinary least squares regression. In this study, we present a positive experience of an e-learning histology course. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three main factors related to "e- learning satisfaction", "in-person class activities", and "course design and teaching quality". We also found that there was a positive and significant relationship between students' perceptions of the adaptation of the traditional (face-to-face) histology course into an e-learning format and their academic performance. Our study shows that e-learning histology courses that integrate lectures and practical sessions can be a valuable teaching method for learning histology. Curriculum developers and teachers need to consider the limitations and advantages of this type of teaching and incorporate these three factors into the design and assessment of e-learning histology courses.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the feasibility and operability in identifying the therapeutic dominant stages of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)based on subdivision model of disease course. Methods The hierarchical Bayesian model was used to differentiate the disease course of 125 cases of premature ovarian failure(POF),and the disease course of POF were divided into the occult stage, diminished ovarian reserve(DOR)stage, premature ovarian insufficiency(POI)stage, and POF stage. An then the paired sample t-test,Pearson correlation analysis and expert in-depth interview were used for the analysis of the therapeutic effects of TCM for POF at various stages.Results(1)Compared with POF stage,DOR and POI stages were frequently intervened by Chinese patent medicine.(2)In DOR(complicated with POI)stage and POF stage, there was significant difference between the degree of TCM intervention and the therapeutic effect(t =-3.70,P<0.001).(3)The degree of TCM intervention was positively correlated with treatment outcomes in the DOR stage(r = 0.679,P<0.001),so did in the POF stage(r = 0.432,P<0.001),but the correlation in the POF stage was slightly lower than that in the DOR stage.(4)The results of in-depth interviews with experts of TCM gynecology showed that in the concealed phase of POF,the prognosis would be most favorable if TCM regulation and intervention were performed. In the DOR stage and POI stage, treatment with Chinese medicine prescriptions usually brought about better curative effect and prognosis. For the patients at POF stage, the therapeutic effect of TCM depended on the patients'compliance and the treatment course, and the effect was relatively not as good as that of the previous stages. Conclusion In the DOR stage and POF stage, the higher the degree of TCM intervention, the better the prognosis will be achieved for the patients treated with western medicine. In the POF stage, the efficacy of TCM intervention is reduced to a certain extent compared with the DOR stage. The results indicated that it is feasible and operable to identify the TCM therapeutic dominant stages based on the subdivision model of disease course.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:For non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head,if the femoral head collapses,it will have a great impact on the normal life of the patients. Thus,it is necessary to use an appropriate way to evaluate the risk of femoral head collapse and then to take targeted measures to delay the process of femoral head collapse. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the natural course of early osteonecrosis of the femoral head(without collapse)under different locations of necrotic lesions. METHODS:121 patients(191 hips)with early non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head who were treated in the Outpatient Department of Honghui Hospital Affiliated to Xi'an Jiaotong University from October 2016 to October 2017 were enrolled in this study. The clinical data of all patients were followed up for 5 years to observe the collapse of osteonecrosis of the femoral head and the risk coefficient of femoral head collapse among different JIC types. The collapse rate of osteonecrosis of the femoral head was calculated during the follow-up. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)A total of 191 hips were included in this study. The femoral head collapsed in 86 hips during follow-up,with a total collapse rate of 45.0%.Among the influencing factors, age,ARCO stage and JIC classification were the main influencing factors of femoral head collapse(P<0.05),but body mass index, sex, incidence side and pathogenic factors were not the main influencing factors(P>0.05).(2)Among 191 hips,in JIC classification, the total collapse rates of type A,type B,type C1 and type C2 were 11.1%(2/18),30.2%(16/53),52.4%(43/82),and 65.8%(25/38),respectively.There were significant differences in the total collapse rate of the femoral head among all types(P<0.05).The collapse risk results showed that the collapse risk of type B,type C1 and type C2 was 2.41,5.22 and 7.89 times higher than that of type A,respectively.(3)Both JIC classification and ARCO stage were correlated with femoral head collapse(P<0.01).There was no significant difference in the collapse rate of the femoral head among all JIC types in ARCO I stage hips(P>0.05).In the hips with ARCO II stage, the collapse rates of the femoral head of JIC types A,B,C1 and C2 were 1.2%,19.5%,50.0%and 29.3%,respectively,and there were significant differences in the collapse rates among different types(P<0.05).(4)During follow-up,the collapse rates of the femoral head in the first to fifth years were 29.3%,7.9%,4.7%,2.6%and 0.5%,respectively.(5)Results showed that for early non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head, the risk of collapse of osteonecrosis of the femoral head is high within one year, and the location of the focus of osteonecrosis affects the risk of collapse of the femoral head. The effect of the location of the focus on the prognosis of the disease should be considered in clinical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To elucidate the actual circumstances of damage caused by Japanese Alocasia (A) odora.Materials and Methods: We investigated cases in Japan from our own hospital in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture as well as published reports.Results:A. dorais found in western Japan, and plants of the Alocasia genus are cultivated often. A. odora is frequently associated with food poisoning because its aboveground parts resemble those of Satoimo (Colocasia esculenta). Moreover, A. odora contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause poisoning symptoms, such as oral pain, nausea, vomiting, and laryngeal edema, resulting in near asphyxia, diarrhea following shock, and skin dermatitis. Calcium oxalate crystals are abundant in Araceae family plants, and cases of health damage owing to the accidental ingestion of Araceae plants have been reported worldwide. Conclusion: Due to the strong irritation felt in the mouth upon contact with the plant, it is advisable to immediately spit out the plant and rinse the mouth. In addition to drug administration, ensuring a secure airway may be necessary if there is a risk of asphyxiation.
