ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to evaluate the dentist's awareness and the actual status of infection control of noncritical dental instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 dental clinics in Daejeon, South Chungcheong, North Chungcheong and North Jeolla provinces were surveyed. The questionnaire was delivered to the dentists belonging to those clinics, and the awareness and the practice of infection control were examined. The microbial contamination on the surface of five noncritical instruments (impression gun, light curing unit, 3-way syringe, shade guide, and dental floss dispenser) used by them was measured with an ATP luminometer. Correlation analysis between the awareness and the actual state of infection control was conducted. RESULTS: Awareness and frequency of infection control was highest in the 3-way syringe. Surface disinfection using disinfectant was most frequent in all instruments. 3-way syringes and shade guides were less contaminated than impression guns, light curing units, and dental floss dispensers. CONCLUSION: 3-way syringes had a significant correlation between user awareness of infection control and surface contamination, and the higher awareness, the lower the contamination measurement was shown.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of three high-level chemical disinfectants for sterilization on cauterization of dental instruments.METHODS The measuring methods for disinfectants on cauterization of metal instruments, and usage indications for disinfectants followed Technical Standard for Disinfection published in 2002 by the Ministry of Health.Fourteen kinds of small instruments(grouped by 4 different metal materials) were analyzed on receipt and after sterilization by three high-level disinfectants(2% glutaraldehyde, chlorine dioxide, and symclosene),using cauterization rate.RESULTS Three high-level disinfectants had different cauterization rates, the cauterization rate was affected by concentration of disinfectant, sterilizing time, and morphology of instruments. The cauterization of chlorine dioxide was the strongest, followed by symclosene(trichloroisocyanuric acid),and then 2% glutaraldehyde.CONCLUSIONS In clinical sterilization, different materials of small instruments need proper disinfectants, concentration and sterilizing time for decreasing their cauterization.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To investigate the management situation of cross infection in outpatient service of stomatology in hospital and clinic in Zhanjiang city and conduct effective measure to control hospital infection.METHODS In our investigation,we selected 105 hospitals and private clinics to inspect their management situation of cross (infection) via dental(instrument).RESULTS The management in the hospitals of the city was quite qualified but the some private dental clinics were terrible. The main problems were as follows: no effective disinfection for dental instrument and the bad environment in procedure room, especially the worse sterilization situation of the dental handpieces. Most of the doctors in private clinics were short of knowledge in the sterilization for dental(instruments.) CONCLUSIONS There is no time to delay for the health administration department to normalize the management of the private dental clinics. It is essential to train the medical staffs, and implement measures for dental instrument disinfection management in private dental clinics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To learn the disinfection and sterilization for dental instruments and to provide scientific basis for related regulations according to the scheme made by Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control.METHODS To investigate some dental medical units by adopting investigation form, inquirement, checking about the record for disinfection equipment including such items as air,the surface of used material, hands, etc.RESULTS Altogether 39 dental medical units including 9 hospitals,21 joint clinics and 9 private medical units were investigated with 96.11%,88.79%,and 70.97% qualified rates, respectively.CONCLUSIONS In private dental units the qualified rate for disfection is poor, disinfection instruments are short, and the professionals knowledge related to disfection is little. As a result, strengthening monitoring and guidance to prevent hospital infection should be carried out at once.

ABSTRACT

Based on current evidence in the literature, it is known that endotoxin is a weakly adherent surface phenomenon and that power-driven instruments can be used to accomplish definitive root detoxification and maximal wound healing without overinstrumentation of root and without extensive cementum removal. And one of the newly developed curette tips used with low power of piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler, is effective to remove calculus and not to remove the excessive cementum. The purpose of this study is therefore, to assess the influence of ultrasonic power and various working parameters on root substitute removal when instrumentation is performed with the curette tip on piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler. This study assessed defect depth, width and area resulting from instrumentation using a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler with a curette type tip in vitro to acrylic resin block as a root substitute. The working parameters was standardized by the sledge device which controls lateral force(0.5 N, 1 N, 2 N) and instrumentation time(5 sec, 10 sec, 20 sec) and power setting was adjusted 0,2,4,8 in P mode. Power setting had the greatest influence on defect depth compared to lateral force and instrumentation time(standardized regression parameter estimates+/-standard error, 0.37+/-0.02, 0.19+/-0.02, 0.07+/-0.02). The effects on defect area also greatest for power setting(0.57+/-0.03) compared to lateral force and instrumentation time(0.33+/-0.03, 0.12+/-0.03). The effect of the power setting on the defect width(0.15+/-0.01) is not so great as defect depth or defect area compared to lateral force(0.12+/-0.01) and effect of instrumentation time is minimal(0.02+/-0.01). It could be concluded that the power setting has the greatest influence on the defect depth and area in curette type tip with low power of piezoelectric ultrasonic device. Many parameters can be adjusted in various situation in clinical use of piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler but the power setting is the first parameter to be adjusted.

ABSTRACT

The peacekeeping area in Sudan belongs to the tropical rain forest climate with heavy rain water and large air humidity. The power supply by diesel engine is unsteady. The peacekeeping persons will be replaced every 8 months because of the demand of peacekeeping mission. Because of the above reasons, the dental instruments are easily damaged. According to the above three characteristics, the dental chair and accessories, dental X-ray system and steam sterilizer are effectively maintained to guarantee dental medical treatments in peacekeeping operation in Sudan.
