ABSTRACT

(AU)

Objective: this paper aims to describe and discuss a surgical removal of canine included in the chin region with the aid of an effective and low-cost complementary exam: lateral radiographic of the mandible using the occlusal film. Case report: a male patient, 26 years old, without systemic diseases sought orthodontic treatment due to anterior crowding and presence of an unerupted tooth 83. In order to perform a correct surgical planning, the lateral radiograph of the occlusal film was performed, where it was found that the tooth 43 was in vestibular position in relation to the lower anterior teeth. Thus, the patient underwent surgery under local anesthesia for tooth extraction. Final considerations: the treatment for transmigration of lower canines should include careful clinical and radiographic planning. The suggested treatment for the vast majority of cases is surgical removal due to the possibility of failure of the other means of treatment, causing subsequent complications. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Mesiodens is the term used for describing the supernumerary tooth that occurs in the maxilla, between the central incisors, in the midline region. These may erupt in the oral cavity or keep themselves impacted. Their presence causes cleaning inadequate, impossibility or difficult of the eruption of the regular teeth and having the aesthetic compromised. This paper aims at showing that early identification of supernumerary teeth, planning and correct approach, allow the preservation of the teeth and adjacent structures. This article presents the clinical case of a seven-year-old child, male, who sought for treatment complaining that teeth 11 didn't appear in the buccal cavity. Clinical and radiographic exams were done and they demonstrated the presence of the supernumerary tooth. The plan of treatment aimed at the correct localization, extraction of this supernumerary tooth and continuous follow up of the case.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of age on the ratio of pulp cavity/tooth width (P/T ratio) in healthy cats. The dental radiographs of 32 cats (16 males and 16 females) were generated with a digital dental X-ray unit with the animals under general anesthesia. Standardized measurement of the canine teeth was performed by drawing a line on the radiograph perpendicular to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) of the tooth. There was an inversely proportional correlation between chronological age and the P/T ratio. Moreover, a strong Pearson squared correlation (gamma2 = 0.92) was identified by the curved regression model. No significant differences in the P/T ratio based on gender or breed were found. These results suggest that determination of age by P/T ratio could be clinically useful for estimating the chronological age of cats.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The radiograph represents one of the evaluation tools of the endodontic procedure. Therefore, radiopacity is an essential property of filling materials. Objective: To evaluate the MTA Fillapex® radiopacity, as compared to that of Sealer26®, Sealapex® and AH Plus®. Material and methods: Five specimens were prepared from each endodontic sealer, which were then positioned in the digital sensor (Kodak RVG 6100 - Digital Radiography System) and radiographed with a Kodak 2200 Intraoral Device Rx System, operating at 70 Kvp, 10 mV, with an exposition time of 0.071 tenth of second and a distance of 20 cm from the sensor. The radiopacity was assessed using the software Image Tool 3.0, which determines gray shades ranging from 0 to 255 pixels. For statistical analysis, ANOVA test was used, followed by Tukey's test at a significance level of 5%. Results: The MTA Fillapex® presented the lowest radiopacity between all tested sealers, while AH Plus® was the most radiopaque one. Sealapex® and Sealer 26® showed intermediate radiopacity and statistically did not differ from each other. Conclusion: MTA Fillapex® presented intermediate radiopacity. When compared with AH Plus®, Sealer 26® and Sealapex® endodontic sealers, it exhibited the smallest result.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Root dilaceration is a dental anomaly characterized by an abnormal curvature of the dental root, which can cause problems during eruption and complications in the orthodontic and endodontic treatment or extraction. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of root dilaceration in permanent incisors in an oral radiology clinic in the city of João Pessoa / PB, Brazil. METHODS: The sample consisted of 548 patients who allowed assessments of their dental radiographs, a total of 3,948 examined teeth. Each tooth was examined according to the occurrence of root dilaceration, regarding type (mild, moderate or severe), root third that it was in and direction of the root. The angle formed by the root deviation in relation to the long tooth axis was obtained by means of a diagram printed on transparent acetate, placed over the radiograph. RESULTS: The results were analyzed with SPSS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 13.0, performing an exploratory data analysis. The prevalence of root dilaceration in the studied sample was 1.03% (41 cases), with higher incidence in males (65.8%), being the superior lateral incisor the most affected teeth (78%). The most prevalent type of root dilaceration was the mild one (73.1%), occurring more in the apical third (90.2%) and with distal direction of the root (95.1%). CONCLUSION: Considering these results, it is emphasized the importance of performing a diagnostic radiographic examination prior to planning a treatment in permanent anterior teeth.
