ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Ethical governance is inherent in responsible research and innovation. The Opinions on Strengthening Ethical Governance of Science and Technology puts forward five ethical principles: promoting human well-being, respecting the right to life, adhering to fairness and justice, reasonably controlling risks and maintaining openness and transparency. This paper interpreted the ideas, key points and difficulties of these five ethical principles. Three suggestions were put forward to strengthen the ethics education of science and technology: first, optimize the curriculum of science and technology ethics for related majors in colleges and universities, and help young students understand ethical principles and establish the correct ethics view of science and technology; second, colleges and universities should carry out education and training for teachers, researchers, managers and members of ethics committees, and actively explore scientific research ethics training and effect evaluation; third, the professional courses offered by college teachers should be organically integrated with the ideological and political content of the courses to play a warning role.

ABSTRACT

Almost 14 years ago, Dean Beatriz Elena Ospina Rave entrusted me with the direction of the IEE Journal, given the leave of absence taken by the then director, María del Pilar Pastor, who had been named Secretary of Health of the Municipality of Medellín. Meeting this responsibility represented a great academic and professional challenge because it was a scientific publication of the highest quality in the area of Nursing, recognized in Colombia and Latin America. I received a journal with 26 years of uninterrupted edition and which already had three years in category A2 in the PUBLINDEX by COLCIENCIAS, hence, I had the commitment to lead the preparation of the publication to ascend to the long-awaited maximum A1 category, for which it was "only" necessary to meet the most complex criterion to obtain: achieve indexing in Medline, or in at Consolidation of the Journal Investigación y Educación en Enfermería as a Publication with Impact on the Dissemination of Nursing Knowledge*Invest Educ Enferm. 2023; 41(3): e01least one of the bibliographic citational bases, like Elsevier's Scopus or in the Web of Science, now Clarivate.

ABSTRACT

Abstract A large number of factors influence the level of information that people may have regarding cervical cancer and the way to prevent it, since education is not only provided by health personnel but also by the family. When making important decisions regarding self-care, people must have effective sex education, in which protection is of vital importance, since misinformation is one of the main factors that promotes cervical cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on the knowledge of cervical cancer prevention in a group of nursing students and their families under the Nola Pender model. The method used in the study was a quasi-experimental, non-probabilistic sample; the knowledge about cervical cancer prevention and control was evaluated before and after the intervention, using the survey validated by Dr. Dina Rubio in 2009 (with her consent). The information was included in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet: the items were placed in columns and the subjects were included in the rows. Specific frequencies and absolute frequencies were calculated, the Nola Pender model was used for the analysis. The units of analysis were selected manually or randomly and these selections do not depend on probability but are generated based on the criteria of the researcher or the specific needs of the research. From a statistical point of view, information about what cervical cancer is, what it implies and how it behaves as a risk is engrained in the mental structure of the participants. To these implications of a technical and methodological nature, others of a structural and conceptual nature are added to build an integrative analysis of the results obtained in the field work. In this case, they include opinions, appraisals, judgments, and evaluations about cervical cancer. This research was organized in the following stages: (1) Evaluation of prior knowledge on cervical cancer prevention and control. The starting point of the investigation was the recognition that the participating women had a basic conceptual scaffolding, acquired through their own experience and self-training or by going to sources such as academia, social networks, specialized magazines, health institutions, medical staff and other specialists who help in the creation of an important background to consolidate an individual perspective. (2) Application of an educational intervention. In this stage, designed workshops were implemented and evaluated by the students with the advice of a teacher, and included the following topics: general concepts, signs and symptoms, associated risk factors, screening techniques, benefits, and exam precautions. The students contributed a theoretical, methodological and evaluative foundation to the design of each workshop, considering the expected training objectives, the characteristics included in its development, and a diversity of pedagogical actions that guarantee the efficiency of the transmitted message. (3) Reevaluation of the knowledge acquired. By applying a post-test, the knowledge acquired during the implementation of the workshops was recovered and resized. In this stage, the variability of the responses measured the transforming effect of the training, either by improving the knowledge acquired or by introducing new knowledge into the participant's cognitive model. The perception that participants have about self-care practices is linked to their beliefs, denoting a favorable level of awareness and clarity, which makes it possible for the application of cytology to recognize the frequency of use, regularity over time, and attention to the results. In conclusion, when evaluating the impact of educational intervention through the Nola Pender model, changes in knowledge were found. Results also indicate that this is an ideal model for employees in heterogeneous popu lation groups in ages, educational levels, professional training, and sexual habits, because it integrates personal experience, the environment and health practices as three elements without which it is not possible to practice self-care and the culture of intervention.

ABSTRACT

Pineocytoma is a rare tumor. It is rare for pineocytoma to present as leptomeningeal metastasis. We present a rare case of pineocytoma with malignant transformation and leptomeningeal metastasis after subtotal tumor resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. This case was a 58-year-old male with an unsteady gait for 2 months. Enhanced brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a heterogeneous mass involving the pineal region. The initial pathological diagnosis of pineocytoma was confirmed after subtotal tumor resection. Two years after adjuvant radiotherapy to the primary site, the magnetic resonance imaging showed C2 and T2 metastatic lesions, with the final pathological diagnosis being pineal parenchymal tumor (PPT) with intermediate differentiation after the removal of T2 intramedullary tumor. After that adjuvant radiotherapy at the cervical and thoracic spinal cord was completed. There was no recurrence of the tumor 1 year after the radiotherapy. We report a rare case of pineocytoma with malignant transformation to PPT with intermediate differentiation and leptomeningeal dissemination.

ABSTRACT

Children with cancer commonly present oral health impairments due to lack of orientation about oral hygiene, which should be directed to caregivers since they are essential in this process. We developed and validated a guideline directed to caregivers for oral hygiene of children with cancer. This exploratory methodological study developed an educational guideline in three stages: analysis of oral health of children attended at the oncology service; literature review and development of the guideline for oral hygiene; semantic, appearance, and content validation by dentists, education professionals, and the target population. We used the Educational Content Validation Instrument in Health, and agreements of ≥ 80 % among evaluators were considered to maintain or modify the assessed items. Professionals and caregivers were mostly female; the latter were predominantly mothers with low educational level from inland areas of Pernambuco state (Brazil). Most professionals had more than ten years of experience in pediatric dentistry. Agreement was > 80 % in all items. The content of the guideline for oral hygiene was valid and relevant to be used in children with cancer.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: As CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte numbers decline, the conventional, localized forms of tuberculosis shift to the atypical, disseminated forms. Variations in lymphocyte and immune cell expression levels affect how tuberculosis manifests in disseminated forms. Understanding the relationship between lymphocyte counts (CD4+ and CD8+) and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-12 and interferon, we may therefore be able to shed light on how infections spread and suggest potential biomarkers for these immune factors. Methods: In this study, 15 guinea pigs were infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) H37Rv strain and grouped into three groups of five each for further investigation. Serum samples and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were examined for the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and T-cell subsets in guinea pigs infected with pulmonary tuberculosis and disseminated tuberculosis. Results: We found that M.tb escapes macrophages due to pro-inflammatory cytokine dysregulation. Despite the protective immunity created by T-cells and cytokines, M.tb bacilli may spread to other organs due to inflammation induced by these immune components. A high number of T-cells and stimulated cytokine production are involved in triggering inflammation after necrotic tissue develops and tuberculosis spreads. Interpretation & conclusions: Our findings imply that increased bacilli in the spleen at the 8th wk of infection may be caused by the overexpression of CD4+ T-cell lymphocyte subsets and cytokines that generated inflammation during the 4th wk of infection. This is a pilot study with a small sample size and less assertive inference. Larger studies would be helpful to validate the results of the present investigation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low-quality online health-related content may lead to inefective or harmful decision-making from patients related to their healthcare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the credibility, accuracy and readability of web-based content on Brazilian websites. METHODS: This is a mixed-method review with exploratory sequential design. Google was selected as the search engine for retrieving web-information about low back pain (LBP) in Brazilian websites. We assessed the URL on three domains: credibility, accuracy, and readability. Qualitative analysis of each URL was performed in three steps: (1) organization into thematic units; (2) data exploration; and (3) interpretation of the data and summarization. RESULTS: Credibility was assessed in 135 URLs, 72 (53%) URLs had no authorship, 119 (88%) did not mention the sources of their information, none presented a declaration of conflict of interest or the declared source of funding, 76 (56%) URLs present the date of creation. Accuracy was assessed in 121 URLs and none fully adhered to the guidelines. Readability was assessed in 128 and texts were classified as "very easy" or "easy" to read. Five main themes emerged in the qualitative analysis: (1) Explanations and causes for low back pain, (2) diagnosis, (3) recommendation about treatment, (4) recommendation for coping and self-management, and (5) lifestyle factors. CONCLUSION: Content analysis of web-based searches on the Brazilian Portuguese language demonstrated low credibility standards, mostly inaccurate information, and moderate-high readability levels about low back pain.

ABSTRACT

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is highly prevalent and poses a great health challenge due to the lack of effective treatments. Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-2 (KPC-2), encoded by blaKPC-2 gene, is one of the major contributors to carbapenem resistance in CRKP. In China and other Asian regions, Tn1721 and plasmid IncFⅡ are the main vectors for blaKPC-2 transfer between Kpn ST11 strains, which lack clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and restriction-modification (R-M) systems. The structure of transposons has a significant impact on the transposition frequency of blaKPC-2, which may be related to the different transposition patterns of transposons. The prevalence advantage of blaKPC-2 in Kpn ST11 strains is highly associated with the immune deficiency in Kpn ST11. By acquiring a re-engineered CRISPR-Cas3 system via conjugation, the high-risk IncFⅡ plasmid can be successfully cleaved and ST11 CRKP can regain antibiotic sensitivity, which provides a promising approach for clinical treatment and prevention of CRKP.

ABSTRACT

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a treasure of ancient Chinese science and a key to unlocking the rich heritage of Chinese civilization. Report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the important speech by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the symposium on cultural inheritance and development provide scientific guidance for accelerating the dissemination of TCM culture in Shaanxi. Starting from the value implications of strengthening the dissemination of TCM in Shaanxi, Taking Harold Lasswell’s "5W" theory as the analytical framework and the problems of weak leadership of communication subjects, insufficient scientific content, low flexibility of communication channels, weak targeting of communication audiences, and insufficient integration of communication effects in the dissemination process of TCM culture in Shaanxi, this paper proposed strategies for the dissemination of Shaanxi TCM culture from five aspects, including strengthening dissemination subjects, optimizing communication content, diversifying communication channels, segmenting communication audiences, and enhancing communication effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the content of the Knowledge Translation Planning Template, a research dissemination planning tool, into Brazilian Portuguese. Method: this is a methodological study, sequentially divided into six stages: initial translation, translation synthesis, back-translation, judges' committee, pre-test, and approval of the adapted version by the instrument author. The judge's committee assessed content validity using the modified Kappa and Content Validity Index. The test was conducted with teachers and students from a Federal University of Santa Catarina graduate program. Results: the process of translating and back-translating the tool showed no discrepancies in terms of meaning. The committee was composed of seven judges who carried out semantic, cultural, and conceptual evaluations and made notes on the translation of the content. At this stage, the content validity showed excellent values for the Content Validity Index and modified Kappa, with 0.99 and 0.816, respectively. The tool was tested with 30 teachers and postgraduate students, where 90% of the respondents considered the tool to be sufficiently comprehensive and that all the items were relevant to the purpose of the instrument. In the last stage, the documents were analyzed together with the author of the original tool and the final version was approved. ABSTRACT

Objectives: to identify factors associated with accidents involving biological material and the perception of biological risk among community health workers (CHWs). Methods: an analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with CHWs using a questionnaire and consultation of vaccination card records. Poisson multiple regression with robust variance was conducted to analyze the factors associated with accidents involving biological material and perception of biological risk. Results: of the 207 participants, 50.24% (95% CI = 43.4 - 56.9) self-reported accidents with biological material, and the associated factors were having a university degree [adjusted PR = 2.2 (95% CI = 1.0 - 4.7)], having another job [adjusted PR = 1.5 (95% CI = 1.0 - 2.3)] and knowledge of the vaccines needed by CHWs [adjusted PR = 0.7 (0.5 - 0.9)]. It was found that 74.39% of CHWs were aware of some biological risk, even to a limited extent. Among the variables investigated, in the adjusted analysis, none showed an association with the perception of biological risk by CHWs. Conclusion: the prevalence of accidents involving biological material among CHWs is high, and the associated factors are having a university degree, having another job, and having knowledge of the vaccines required for the job. Most CHWs have a limited perception of the risk. No factors were associated with this variable.

ABSTRACT

Editorial work is almost never visible in the knowledge transmission chain; however, it is an arduous, exhaustive and precise task, in evaluating, selecting, producing and distributing scientific material, as well as its dissemination and marketing. That is why the following paragraphs will explain, in a simple way, how scientific knowledge is built, disseminated and creates new knowledge, thanks to publishers and their professionals. Every creative effort in the area of science must be recorded in writing, therefore, the objective of the work was to summarize the process of creating the scientific article since the reception of the manuscript to its publication; to this end, the narrative review method was used. The scientific article, as an separate or union procedure for the dissemination of development and innovation, has been the most used to show new knowledge, to preserve the first and to ensure that the information reaches its recipients, who are not necessarily generators of human knowledge, but diffusers. The description, evaluation and dissemination of science (socialization of science) has been an essential aspect in the techno-scientific development, which has certified means (scientific journals) to accredit and validate the knowledge that has been generated, or it is in progress, in a certain field, a given period and a specific region.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To reflect on the COVID-19 infodemic in the light of Edgar Morin's Complexity Theory and its three main principles, namely the dialogic principle, organizational and hologrammatic recursion. Methodology: This is a theoretical essay with a reflective character of the literature on the COVID-19 infodemic in the light of Edgar Morin's Complexity Theory. Result: Interrelating the dialogic principle with the infodemic, one can reflect on the relationship of the complex ambivalence between disinformation and scientifically validated information and the various contents dissipated in the media. It is noteworthy that it is necessary to carry out a coherent and reliable synthesis of the contents covered and widely disseminated. The COVID-19 infodemic is submerged in an intention that occurs between the lines of the media, and in this intention, there is direct participation by society. It is understood that disinformation increases as the production of content increases, in this sense, disinformation produces the infodemic which, consequently, is also produced by disinformation. It is possible to reflect on the infodemic through the notion that it can influence and be influenced by the whole, thus involving issues that cross public health, the economy, politics, at the same time that it is fostered and influenced by these specific axes. Final considerations: the principles of complex thinking are elements that help the understanding of the infodemic phenomenon and its influence in the informational context. It is hoped that this reflective study can contribute to mitigate the repercussions of the infodemic in the daily lives of users of information networks.
