ABSTRACT
The current agricultural scenario faces diverse challenges, among which phytosanitary issues are crucial. Plant diseases are mostly treated with chemicals, which cause environmental pollution and pathogen resistance. In light of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the biochar alternative use to chemical inputs fits into at least six of the proposed goals (2, 3, 7, 13, 15, and 17), highlighting the 12th, which explains responsible consumption and production. Biochar is valuable for inducing systemic resistance in plants because it is a practical and frequently used resource for improving physical, chemical, and biological soil attributes. This review assessed the beneficial and potential effects of applying biochar to agricultural soils on bacterial pathogen management. Such application is a recent strategy; therefore, this research evaluated 20 studies that used biochar to manage plant diseases caused by pathogens inhabiting the soil in different systems. The effectiveness of biochar application in controlling plant diseases has been attributed to its alkaline pH, which contributes to the growth of beneficial microorganisms and increases nutrient availability, and its porous structure, which provides habitat and protection for soil microbiome development. Therefore, the combined effect of improvements on soil attributes through biochar application aids pathogen control. Biochar application helps manage plant diseases through different mechanisms, inducing plant resistance, increasing activities and abundance of beneficial microorganisms, and changing soil quality for nutrient availability and abiotic conditions.

ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT The search for alternative and renewable sources of energies is growing, as is the concern with the growing increase in the generation of waste by the world population. The energy use of the gas generated by the decomposition of solid waste at landfills is an attractive way to solve these two problems, at once. In order to contribute to the development of electric power generation from landfills in Brazil, the present work comprises an analysis of the energy potential and financial viability of this energy alternative in the country. For the construction of the analyses, waste and climate generation data from six Brazilian cities were used, which allowed the estimation of the gas production flow in the landfills of each city, the optimum power to be installed in each of these landfills and the economic viability of this alternative. The generation cost values obtained ranged between R$ 345 and 440·MWh, being strongly influenced by factors such as population, waste capitation and climatic factors, being, in general, higher than the typical values of energy sales tariff in the country. This implies a need to formulate public policies to encourage the generation of energy from solid urban waste in Brazil.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Electricity is undoubtedly one of the most important resources in the modern world. As the demand for electric energy increases, conventional resources that are transformed into electric energy are being exhausted, generating a need to search for alternative sources, resulting in a significant increase in energy costs. This study presents an integrated project of an intelligent microgrid and energy management aimed at reducing energy costs. At the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), electricity represents an annual cost of over BRL 13 million, which is the third largest operating expense of the university. In addition, the public education budget in Brazil has been decreased in recent years. Therefore, this study was conducted within the scope of UFPR and aimed to analyze three alternatives to reduce electric energy costs: i) demand management through an analysis of energy bills, ii) migration to the free energy market, and iii) the development of an in-house photovoltaic generation facility. A computational tool to optimize the contracted demand and simulate the annual savings with the free market and distributed generation projects was developed using Microsoft Excel. Payback, the net present value, and the internal rate of return were calculated. Finally, the economic viability of all alternatives was proven, with demand management demonstrating an economic potential of greater than BRL 500,000 per year, use of the free market saving more than BRL 300,000, and the developed in-house photovoltaic generation system achieving an economic impact of more than BRL 600,000 per year.

ABSTRACT The increase in energy demand in Brazil encourages the country to increasingly invest in generation of electric energy, where the demand for other renewable sources increases gradually because they have a lower impact on the environment. The use of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPVS) is a viable solution for the country, since it presents favorable natural conditions for the use of solar energy. This study approaches the current scenario of three photovoltaic systems installed in Curitiba in 2016 and part of 2017: Green Office (GO) located in Curitiba Campus Downtown, Curitiba Campus Neoville, both of the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), as well as a residence. By means of performance parameters, performance analysis of these systems were carried out and, in order to measure the length of time of the return of the initial investment in its installation, a study of the economic viability of these systems according to the current rate model in Brazil through economic engineering tools was carried out: Simple Payback and Discounted Payback, Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return. Finally, the application of the saved value of electric energy bills was simulated in a bank account during the system´s lifespan.

Three experiments were carried out to determine the chemical composition and metabolizable energy values of vegetable semi-purified glycerin and verify the performance and carcass yeild of meat type quai, fed with diets containing increasing levels of glycerin. In the first experiment 50 quails were used, housed in metabolism cages. The treatments consisted of a reference diet and a test diet containing the replacement level of 10% glycerin, with five replications of five quails per replication. The value of apparent metabolisable energy corrected by nitrogen balance of glycerin was 3.069 kcal/kg. In the second experiment 640 quails were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (control diet and four levels = 4, 8, 12 and 16% of glycerin), four replications with 32 birds per replication. There were no differences (P>0.05) on feed intake and weight gain. The inclusion of glycerin (1 - 14 days of age) decrease feed:gain ratio. In the third experiment, 440 quails were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments, with four replications with 22 birds per repetition. The treatments used were the same as the second trial. The feed intake increased linearly (P<0.05) with the increase in the levels of glycerin, however, weight gain and feed:gain ratio were not influenced. It follows that the semi-purified glycerin can be included in the diets of quail (15 - 35 days of age) in levels up to 16%.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of the research was to determine, through the calculation of net present value (VPL), internal return rate (TIR) and Economic Payback (PBE), the viability of Heliconias production in the Rio de Janeiro State, as well as identify and verify, by means of sensitivity analysis in which extent some factors of the production system exercise impact on the profitability of the producing regions. The results showed that helicônia production is a profitable activity, according to the method of TIR and considering minimal attractiveness rates (TMA) of 6 percent and 12 percent for calculating the net present value (VPL). However, there are limitations in the sector of produce flow, delaying the consolidation of this market. The percentage of losses and the selling price of the product presented determinant factors on the time of return on investment (PBE). In addition, the selling price of the product was the variable with greater effect on profitability, followed by the land value and the seedlings cost.
