ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a cranial bone defect model of goat and to study application in craniomaxillo-facial surgery. Methods Electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) scanner was used to scan goat'heads and faces in series and thin layers.Data of EBCT were input in workstation from digital inlet, and then to three-dimensional reconstruction with method of surface shadow. After final data were transformed to the files, the rapid prototyping machine was able to identify and establish the 3D model. Results The EBCT continuous thin-layer (1 mm) scanning data were passed to wave filter, falling coarse, distinguishing and collecting the outline,3D-reconstruction,curved surface reconstruction with CAD and the substance reconstruction. The final data were input into the laser rapid prototyping machine.Three-dimensional bionic cranium models were fabricated by machine in layer by layer manufacturing principle. Conclusions Establishment of the cranial bone defect model in the goat is very useful to the three-dimensional measurement, individualized reconstruction and basic and clinical research for the cranial bone defect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To assess the prevalence and risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) and EBCT angiography (EBCTA). Methods: Ninety-four cases were enrolled in this study including diabetes (n=28), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, n=30), coronary heart disease (CHD, n=11), and control (n=25). Cardiac EBCT plain scanning and EBCTA were performed on all of these subjects to evaluate coronary artery calcification (CAC) scores, and number of segments of stenosed coronary arteries. Both CAC and/or coronary artery stenosis were defined as patients with coronary artery lesions (CAL). Results CAC scores were not different with the control, diabetes, IGT, or CHD (P>0.05)groups. Compared to control (0.520±1.295), more stenosed coronary arteries segments (P<0.05) were detected in diabetes (2.964±1.915), IGT (2.200±2.024), and CHD (2.273±1.679). Number of stenosed artery segments were correlated with age (r=0.215, P=0.019),postprandial glucose (r=0.224, P=0.015), total cholesterol (r=0.323, P=0.000), and duration of diabetes (r=0.208, P=0.004). The incidences of CAL in diabetes (96.43%), IGT (93.33%), and CHD (90.91%) was substantially higher than that in normal control (56.00%, P<0.01).The odds ratio of CAL associated with having diabetes was estimated to be 7.514 (95% CI: 1.885-63.778). Conclusions Coronary artery lesions are prevalent in Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes, implying a high CAD risk. EBCTA holds potential in depicting the details of CAL and can be used to track the progression of CAD in diabetes patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the electron beam computed tomography(EBCT) three-dimensional reconstruction in the diagnosis of bowel obstruction. Methods: Seventy-eight patients suspected of bowel obstruction underwent EBCT with two-phase enhancement scanning and 32 of them were re-established by corona-MPR and sagittal-MPR.All the EBCT results were analyzed and compared with the clinical findings. Results: Seventy-three of the cases were diagnosed as bowel obstruction by EBCT,which were all confirmed by surgery or follow-up,with an accuracy rate of 100% for location diagnosis and 86.3% for etiology. Conclusion: EBCT 3D-reconstruction has great advantages in determining the location, etiology and blood-supply of bowel obstruction.

ABSTRACT

The authors investigated the relationship between anger and the calcification of the coronary artery in individuals with and without risk factors for coronary artery disease in Korea. Sixty-one subjects with risk factors of coronary artery disease and 31 subjects without risk factors were enrolled in this study. Electron Beam Computed Tomography was used to measure the calcium level of coronary artery. The anger expression scale was used to measure the anger levels. The anxiety, depression, hostility, and somatization subscales of the symptom checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R) and the global assessment of recent stress (GARS) scale were used to assess the psychopathology and perceived stress. The logistic regression analysis results showed that only the anger-total score was significantly associated with the coronary calcification regardless of the risk factors. These results suggest that anger plays an important role in the calcification of the coronary artery.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Evaluating ovarian carcinoma diagnosis, staging and resectability with EBCT. Methods: 25 cases of ovarian carcinoma were performed in total abdominal including pelvic with EBCT one week before operation.CT findings were compared and analysed with surgical and pathological results. Results: Of 25 patients,11 were serous cyst adenocarcinoma, six mucinous cyst adenocarcinoma, three malignant teratoma, two metastases, and each have only one for clear cell carcinoma, embryo carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma.Clinical staging of carcinoma were seven in stageⅠ,seven in stage Ⅱ,nine in stage Ⅲ,two in stage Ⅳ.Invaded vessels and nearby organs around ovarian carcinoma, and the status of peritoneum metastases, were main factors that influenced the difficulties of operation.Compared with conventional CT,EBCT has the virtues of ultrafast scanning, excellent quality of image, and displaying focus detail fine. Conclusion: EBCT scanning is very valuable in diagnosis, tumor staging and evaluating resectability of ovarian carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Objectives:In situ coronary calcium is a specific anatomic marker of coronary atheroma. Electron beam CT is the first noninvasive method to determine coronary artery calcium. The aim of this study was to investigate the coronary artery calcium(CAC) in Chinese. Methods:Nine hundred and fifty-nine Chinese cases undergoing electron beam screening were divided into six age groups: ①younger than 29,②30~39,③40~49,④50~59,⑤60~69,⑥older than 70 years old, and were divided into another three groups according to coronary artery disease(CAD) symptoms.①symptomatic group: symptomatic patients with CAD;②doubtful symptom group: patients had atypical chest pain, but without sufficient information of angina,③asymptomatic group: patients without CAD symptoms. Results:① Prevalence of CAC and the total scores of CAC in asymptomatic men and women increased significantly with increased ages. ② There was a large increase in the prevalence of CAC in asymptomatic women between the age of 40~49 and 50~59. Conclusions: ①Coronary artery calcium prevalence increases with age in both men and women.②There is a marked difference in the prevalence of calcium between men and women.③The noninvasive detection of CAC by EBCT has certain prognostic and predictive value for coronary artery disease.
