ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the prevalence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of artemisinin resistance-related Pfubp1 and Pfap2mu genes in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, so as to to provide baseline data for the formulation of malaria control strategies in Bioko Island. Methods A total of 184 clinical blood samples were collected from patients with P. falciparum malaria in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea from 2018 to 2020, and genomic DNA was extracted. The Pfubp1 and Pfap2mu gene SNPs of P. falciparum were determined using a nested PCR assay and Sanger sequencing, and the gene sequences were aligned. Results There were 159 wild-type P. falciparum isolates (88.83%) from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, and 6 SNPs were identified in 20 Pfubp1-mutant P. falciparum isolates (11.17%), in which 4 non-synonymous mutations were detected, including E1516G, K1520E, D1525E, E1528D. There was only one Pfubp1gene mutation site in 19 Pfubp1-mutant P. falciparum isolates (95.00%), in which non-synonymous mutations accounted for 68.42% (13/19). D1525E and E1528D were identified as major known epidemic mutation sites in the Pfubp1 gene associated with resistance to artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). At amino acid position 1525, there were 178 wild-type P. falciparum isolates (99.44%) and 1 mutant isolate (0.56%), with such a mutation site identified in blood samples in 2018, and at amino acid position 1528, there were 167 wild-type P. falciparum isolates (93.30%) and 12 mutant isolates (6.70%). The proportions of wild-type P. falciparum isolates were 95.72% (134/140), 79.25% (126/159) and 95.83% (161/168) in the target amplification fragments of the three regions in the Pfap2mu gene (Pfap2mu-inner1, Pfap2mu-inner2, Pfap2mu-inner3), respectively. There were 16 different SNPs identified in all successfully sequenced P. falciparum isolates, in which 7 non-synonymous mutations were detected, including S160N, K199T, A475V, S508G, I511M, L595F, and Y603H. There were 7 out of 43 Pfap2mu-mutant P. falciparum isolates (16.28%) that harbored only one gene mutation site, in which non-synonymous mutations accounted for 28.57% (2/7). For the known delayed clearance locus S160N associated with ACTs, there were 143 wild-type (89.94%) and 16 Pfap2mu-mutant P. falciparum isolates (10.06%). Conclusions Both Pfubp1 and Pfap2mu gene mutations were detected in P. falciparum isolates from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea from 2018 to 2020, with a low prevalence rate of Pfubp1 gene mutation and a high prevalence rate of Pfap2mu gene mutation. In addition, new mutation sites were identified in the Pfubp1 (E1504E and K1520E) and Pfap2mu genes (A475V and S508G).

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To determine the relationship of the anatomical planes of the crystalline lens with the actual position of the intraocular lens in patients with a diagnosis of cataract seen at the Ocular Microsurgery Center of the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology during the period January 2018 and January 2021. Methods: An observational, descriptive, prospective longitudinal study was performed in 89 eyes of 67 patients operated on for cataract with intraocular lens implantation (IOL) by phacoemulsification technique. The IOL Master 700 and the SRK/T formula were used to calculate lens power. The OCT image provided by the IOL Master 700 was used to determine the equatorial plane and central plane of the crystalline lens, as well as the actual position of the intraocular lens. Results: The age group 60-79 years was predominant, female gender represented 53 percent. Average eye size and ocular biometric measurements in standard average values were the most representative. The equatorial plane showed less difference with the actual intraocular lens position compared to the difference evidenced between the central plane and the actual lens position. The adequate position of the intraocular lens calculated in the capsular bag independent to the axial length, allowed to obtain a refractive result in correspondence to the one expected before surgery. Conclusion: The anatomical parameters of the crystalline lens (equatorial plane, central plane) are important variables to be taken into account for the development and improvement of the formulas for the calculation of the intraocular lens(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the drug-resistant gene polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum imported from Equatorial Guinea to Shandong Province. MethodsFrom 2015 to 2016, blood samples were collected from imported P. falciparum malaria patients returning from Equatorial Guinea to Shandong Province, and genome DNA of the malaria parasite was extracted. The drug-resistant Pfcrt, Pfmdr1, Pfdhfr, Pfdhps, and K13 genes of P. falciparum were amplified using a PCR assay, followed by DNA sequencing, and the sequences were aligned. Results The target fragments of all 5 drug-resistant genes of P. falciparum were successfully amplified and sequenced. There were 72.8%, 18.6%, and 8.6% of P. falciparum parasites carrying the wild-, mutant-, and mixed-type Pfcrt gene, respectively, and all mutant haplotypes were CVIET (the underline indicates the mutation site). There were 20.0%, 61.4% and 18.6% of P. falciparum parasites carrying the wild-, mutant-, and mixed-type Pfmdr1 gene, respectively, and the mutant haplotypes mainly included YF and NF (the underlines indicate the mutation sites). There were 1.4%, 98.6%, and 0 of P. falciparum parasites carrying the wild-, mutant-, and mixed-type Pfdhfr gene, respectively, and AIRNI was the predominant mutant haplotype (the underline indicates the mutation site). There were 1.4%, 94.3%, and 4.3% of P. falciparum parasites carrying the wild-, mutant-, and mixed-type Pfdhps gene, respectively, and SGKAA was the predominant mutant haplotype (the underline indicates the mutation site). The complete drug-resistant IRNGE genotype consisted of 8.6% of the Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes, and the K13 gene A578S mutation occurred in 1.4% of the parasite samples. Conclusions There are mutations in the Pfcrt, Pfmdr1, Pfdhfr, Pfdhps, and K13 genes of P. falciparum imported from Equatorial Guinea to Shandong Province, with a low frequency in the Pfcrt gene mutation and a high frequency in the Pfmdr1, Pfdhfr, and Pfdhps gene mutations, and the K13 gene A578S mutation is detected in the parasite samples.

ABSTRACT

Páramos are equatorial alpine ecosystems characterized by a high air humidity, frequency of fog and the presence of shrub and herbaceous vegetation adapted to the specific equatorial alpine conditions. Under natural conditions these ecosystems present a high water yield, among other ecosystem services, however, this changes when they are degraded. Despite their importance, they are ecosystems that have been modified by man, most of them even without having been studied. This paper presents the results of a hydrological research carried out in three páramos in Colombia, which evaluates their hydrological functioning and their capacity for recovery once they are altered. Therefore, we studied their climate, hydrology, and soils properties. Results indicate that these ecosystems have different climatic conditions, which determine their water yield and water regulation. Differences in the hydro-physical properties of soils and organic matter content, which determine differences in their capacity to retain water and on the magnitude of the water available for plants. These results indicate that undisturbed páramos or with a low degree of disturbance present high water yield and good water regulation; and intervened páramos can recover the natural conditions of soil properties, and consequently their hydrological functioning, even in a few decades.

ABSTRACT

?AIM: To observed the clinical effect of twice fluid-gas exchange in vitrectomy for retinal detachment at the equator.?METHODS: The retrospective analysis of the 74 cases (74 eyes) with retinal detachment at the equator from January 2014 to September 2015 were reviewed. All these patients were performed standard three channel 23G vitrectomy under a wide angle lens, in which, the 37 cases ( 37 eyes ) were randomly selected and performed single fluid-gas exchange, and the other 37 cases ( 37 eyes) were performed twice fluid-gas exchange. The intraoperative surgical complications and the postoperative success rate of retinal reposition in 1wk, 1, 3mo after surgery of the two group patients were observed.? RESULTS: The intraoperative surgical complication rates of the twice fluid-gas exchange group were less than that of the single fluid-gas exchange group. The postoperative success rate of retinal reposition in the twice fluid-gas exchange group significantly increased in 1wk and 1mo after surgery, and the difference was statistically significant (P0. 05).?CONCLUSION:The twice fluid-gas exchange operation was simple and it was beneficial for beginners to master. The incomplete drainage of the single fluid-gas exchange and the pore drainage in the posterior pole or in the peripheral part of the retina were avoided during the surgery. The intraoperative surgical complication rates were reduced and the postoperative success rate of retinal reposition were improved. This operation method had great application value in clinic.

ABSTRACT

The presence of placental vascular anastomoses in monochorionic twins favors the development of several complications like Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) and Twin Anemia-Polycythemia Sequence (TAPS). TTTS and TAPS are both chronic forms of fetofetal transfusion. TAPS, described on 2007, is characterized by chronic anemia in the donor twin and polycythemia in the recipient twin, in the absence of amniotic fluid volume discordances, characteristic of classical TTTS. The diagnostic can be made pree posnatally. The prenatal diagnostic criteria is based on the inter-twin discordance in Doppler measurement of peak systolic velocity in the middle cerebral artery (MCA-PSV). The postnatal diagnosis is based on large intertwin hemoglobin difference at birth and retoculocytosis in the donor twin.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The Pacific Tropical Rainforest and Equatorial Dry Forest are found only in southern Ecuador and northern Peru, and are among the most poorly known ecosystems of South America. Even though these forests are protected in Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape (PNCA), they are threatened by fragmentation because of farming and agriculture. The aim of this study was to determine the medium and large mammalian species richness, using transect census, camera trapping, and specimen bone collection. Nine transects were established and 21 camera trap stations were placed along 16 km² in three localities of PNCA, from August 2012 to April 2013. Total sampling effort was 215 km of transects and 4077 camera-days. We documented 22 species; including 17 with camera trapping, 11 with transect census, and 10 with specimen collection. Camera traps were the most effective method, and four species (Dasyprocta punctata, Cuniculus paca, Leopardus wiedii and Puma concolor) were documented only with this method. This comprised the first Peruvian record for Dasyprocta punctata, and the first record for the western slope of the Peruvian Andes for Cuniculus paca. Also, both specimen collections and sightings confirm the presence of Potos flavus, first record in the western slope of the Peruvian Andes. Panthera onca, Tremarctos ornatus and Saimiri sciureus are considered locally extinct, while several species are in need of further research. We highlight the importance of the high diversity of this rainforests and encourage local authorities to give the area the highest priority in conservation.

ABSTRACT

Bragança's socioeconomic situation is highly dependent on estuarine and marine biological resources that are influenced by tidal cycles and climatology. Field measurements (hydrological, hydrodynamic and microbiological variables) were taken in the most urbanized zone from Caeté estuary to characterise the quality of the local environment. During the dry period, the estuary was more eutrophic and presented the highest temperature (30.5 °C in Oct./06), salinity (17 psu in Feb./07), pH (8.24 in Feb./07) and fecal coliform (> 1000 MPN/100 ml in Dec./06 and Feb./07) values. The phytoplankton Cyclotella meneghiniana, Coscinodiscus centralis and other r-strategist species were observed. The lack of basic hydric canalization was responsible for the local contamination, especially during the dry period when more concentrated wastewater from the city was emitted into the estuary, showing the human influence on the reduction of local estuarine water quality. In Bragança, the fishery is considered one of the main economic activities so, this contamination is worrisome because a large part of the local economy depends on biological resources and, thus, the contamination could negatively affect the environmental health of this Amazon ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

The Assamiidae (Opiliones: Assamiidae) from Río Muni (Equatorial Guinea), with the description of eight new species. The Opiliones from Equatorial Guinea’s Continental Region (formerly Río Muni) had not been studied previously. A collection made in 1996 produced 22 species, ten of which belong to the Assamiidae and are studied herein: Chilon robustus and Mbinia xenophora gen. nov., sp. nov. (Erecinae); Podauchenius longipes and Rhabdopygus funilignorum sp. nov. (Hypoxestinae); Ayenea trimaculata gen. nov., sp. nov., Montalenia forficula gen. nov., sp. nov. and Niefanga spinosa gen. nov., sp. nov. (Polycoryphinae); Binderia longipes sp. nov., Seuthes inermis sp. nov. and Seuthessus coriscanus sp. nov. (Selencinae). We consider Ayenea, Montalenia and Niefanga an informal suprageneric group characterized by two orifices on the dorsal side of the penis and a thick genital operculum. Identification keys to species of these taxa are provided, together with color photographs of both sexes (except the female of Binderia longipes). Eight of the ten assamiid species have been recorded from the Monte Alén National Park; only two selencine species (apparently coastal) are absent. Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (1): 203-243. Epub 2010 March 01.

(Erecinae), Podauchenius longipes sp. nov. y Rhabdopygus funilignorum sp. nov. (Hypoxestinae), Ayenea trimaculata gen. nov., sp. nov., Montalenia forfícula gen. nov., sp. nov. y Niefanga spinosa gen. nov., sp. ov. (Polycoryphinae), Binderia longipes sp. nov., Seuthes inermis sp. nov. y Seuthessus coriscanus sp. nov. (Selencinae).

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate changes induced by hindlimb unloading in morphology of nerve endings in soleus muscle spindles.Method Hindlimb unloading model was simulated by tail suspension in female rats.Fast silver-staining was used to observe morphology of nerve endings of single muscle spindle in 7 d,14 d,21 d and 28 d tail-suspended and control rats.Result Nerve endings of muscle spindles in control rats were intact and clear, and there was no obvious abnormality in single soleus muscle spindle of 7 d tail-suspended rats.Slight fragmentation of nerve endings was observed in Equatorial Region of soleus muscle spindle in 14 d tail-suspended rats, while reduction in density and disruption of nerve endings were observed in soleus muscle spindle in 21 d tail-suspended rats.Serious degeneration and distortion of nerve endings were found in soleus muscle spindle in 28 d tail-suspended rats. Conclusion Hindlimb-unloading can induce time-related changes in morphology of nerve endings of muscle spindle in rats soleus muscle.

ABSTRACT

While retinal detachment is not rarely associated with posterior staphyloma and macular hole, very few cases of retinal detachment with equatorial scleral staphyloma are reported until recentily. In the course of retinal detachment surgery, an equatorial staphyloma is found unexpectedly and makes surgical treatment difficult. We experienced a 70 year old woman who had retinal detachment due to a hole at the 1 o'clock equator. During the retinal detachment surgery, a large equatorial staphyloma was noted right over the retinal hole. Scleral surface buckling procedure and graft using the preserved human sclera were performed. After the follow up period of 6 months, retina was still reattached.
