ABSTRACT

The quality of education along with its evaluation instruments is a concept developed historically and socially. Some concepts understand quality of education as a process of negotiation, significantly evaluated by different members of the educational community, amongst them the families. This article presents a research focused in family's perspective of quality of a public early childhood education setting, aiming to understand what quality of education for those families is and which parameters are selected by them to develop this concept. Based on the theoric-methodologic perspective Rede de Significações, the data was built with 64 families through a questionnaire and a group discussion. Our data reveal that the families show education quality references similar to the Early Childhood experts. It also shows how complex is the family participation in the evaluation of the early childhood education setting quality.

ABSTRACT

Starting from the reading of official documents, one can reflect about the changes the Mexican Government has presented for assuming itself as an evaluating state; about the Cooperative Organization for the Economical. Development (OCDE) participation to the diagnostics about education in Mexico, and the Students Evaluation. International Program (PlSA) application, their outcomes, and the answer given by the government when generating strategies to change the Mexican population reading abilities. Here, the outcomes of a survey carriec! out in 2005 by the Federal Procurator Office for Consumers (Profeco) in order to identify how, at eight years from the OCDE diagnoses (1997) and at five from the PISA application (2000), with an emphasis on reading, population continues showing negative outcomes. The proposal is to stop waiting for public politics before this urgent need and realize a reflexive and responsible attitude must be adopted with ourselves and with the population with which we are relating, either because working or family reasons; with the certitude that we are capable to build a better "tomorrow".

ABSTRACT

I investigated the use of surveys of medical students attending Osaka Medical College for evaluating education. Questionnaires were distributed to fourth-year students twice, in 2001 and 2002. Both signed and anonymous questionnaires were used each time. The recovery rates for the signed questionnaires were 100% in 2001 and 2002, and those for anonymous questionnaires were 93.1% and 81.5%, respectively. The students believed that the lectures had good points but could be improved. Evaluation scores were higher for 63.3% of items on the second questionnaire, a finding that suggests lectures have improved. Free opinions were offered by 30% to 40% of respondents and included concrete suggestions for improving lectures. These results suggest that evaluation of medical education by students is useful for teaching-staff development and, in particular, for improving lectures at Osaka Medical College.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the effects of evaluation of education by medical students using the minutes paper, which was developed by Professor Yasuoka, also of Tokai University. The minutes paper consists of 3 questions with 10 gradedchoices and of 8 questions with 2 graded choices. One of the 3 questions with 10 graded choices asks a general impression of a lecture. Every faculty member at the Tokai University School of Medicine should be evaluated once a year by students using the minutes paper. A total of 202 faculty members were evaluated in 1999 or in 2000, and 73 of these faculty members were evaluated in both 1999 and 2000. The faculty members were divided into 3 groups (low grade, moderate grade, and high grade) on the basis of their grades in 1999. In 2000, the low-grade group achieved higher evaluation scores, whereas the moderate-and high-grade groups did not. These results suggest that our evaluation system with minutes papers was effective for improving teaching faculty members with low grades.

ABSTRACT

It is a great social demand on the medical education system to produce high quality physicians well -prepared for the coming aged society. Besides the inborn emphasis on the technical competence in medical training, the skills to improve the quality of life of patients is currently getting more and more important. In this aspect, human relationship and amenity dimensions need to be more emphasized in the medical education process.
Based upon the observation that lecture-based classes still prevail in the curricula of Japanese medical schools, I dare say that there are eventually no revolutionary strategies initiated for effective learning in the medical education system in Japan. In connection to the strategy development, it is necessary to adopt third-party evaluation of the education system as well as the evaluation by educators themselves.
To sum up, I strongly emphasize the importance of strategic programming of primary care education which includes experience-based training of effective communication skills and of whole-person approach to patients.
