ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective The Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) is a cost-free 75 question-questionnaire developed by an Italian group to collect information from parents on the behavior of children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years. It assesses different areas of children's behavior and psychopathology, including internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and can be used to identify children at risk of mental disorders both in clinical and epidemiological settings. In this study, the authors present a Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the CABI and its psychometric properties. Methods First, the authors conducted a rigorous transcultural adaptation of CABI's questions and instructions for the Brazilian context. In an online sample of 598 parents, the authors found high reliability (internal consistency) for the CABI's main subscales. Results Validity was supported by exploratory factor analysis (the authors found 6 factors representing several aspects of psychopathology both according to the DSM and HiTop models) and significant differences in most CABI's subscales between children with parent-reported psychopathology and typically developing ones. The present study suggests that the adapted version of CABI is a valid and reliable measure that can be used in Brazil. Conclusions The CABI can be useful to the pediatrician to get fast but wide information from parents on the behavioral condition of their children or adolescents, and also to decide whether it is appropriate to consult a mental health professional.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Identifying the underlying mechanisms through which adverse childhood experiences affect (ACEs) the mental health of adolescents is of paramount importance for disease prevention in later stages of life. Objective The present study examines the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology in adolescents from northern Chile and how attachment style (abandonment anxiety and intimacy avoidance) may moderate this relationship. A total of 154 schooled adolescents aged 12 to 17 (M = 15.08, SD = 1.64) completed a series of self-report questionnaires including the Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire (ACEs), Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures (ECR-RS), and Youth Self Report (YSR-18). Results The data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 25, which included descriptive analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation analysis. To address moderation analysis, the PROCESS macro extension version 4.1 was employed. In this process, the bootstrap method was applied to construct confidence intervals, and the pick-a-point approach was used to define the levels of the moderating variable. According to the results, 80.3% of the sample experienced one or more ACEs, and 16.4% reported experiencing at least three. Furthermore, the variables under study exhibited significant correlations with each other, except for intimacy avoidance, which showed no correlation with ACEs (rho = −0.10; p = 0.273). When considering abandonment anxiety as a moderating variable, the direct effect of ACEs on externalizing symptoms showed statistically significant changes (β = 0.60, p = 0.03). No other moderating effects were found according to the proposed models. Conclusion In childhood, the accumulation of ACEs is associated with the development of psychopathology in adolescents from northern Chile, specifically with the presence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms. These findings suggest that lower levels of abandonment anxiety could mitigate the effects of ACEs on adolescent psychopathology, while higher levels of abandonment anxiety could exacerbate these effects on psychopathology.

ABSTRACT

The involvement of the adolescent in coparental conflict through triangulation impacts the development of emotional and behavioral symptoms. This article researched direct and indirect impacts of coparental triangulation relations and conflicts between parents and their adolescent children on internalizing and externalizing problems, controlling gender and age variables. As a quantitative, cross-sectional and explanatory study, it included 238 adolescents, aged 14 to 18 years old, and used structural equation modeling analysis. As a result, internalizing and externalizing problems were associated with father, mother, and coparental dyad triangulation, mediated by conflicts between father-adolescent conflict and mother-adolescent conflict. Father triangulation had direct and indirect connections with adolescents' externalizing problems. Mother triangulation was associated with adolescents' anxiety and depression, mediated by father-adolescent conflicts. There were no distinctions for gender and age regarding the level of impact between variables. The data provide greater depth and precision in understanding these relationships for practical applications looking for a healthy development of the offspring and their families

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effect sense of security and self-control on parent-child cohesion and externalizing problem behaviors in primary and middle school students. Methods:A total of 1 402 primary and middle school students were investigated with the problem behavior frequency scale(PBFS), family adaptability and cohesion scale(FACES-CV), security questionnaire(SQ) and brief self-control scale(BSCS). SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS v2.16 were used for statistical analysis, and common method deviation test, Pearson correlation analysis and intermediary effect analysis were used in the analysis.Results:Parent-child cohesion of primary and middle school students was positively correlated with security and self-control ( r=0.279, 0.303, both P<0.01), which was negatively correlated with externalizing problem behaviors ( r=-0.154, P<0.01). Security was positively correlated with self-control ( r=0.567, P<0.01). Security, self-control and externalizing problem behaviors were negatively correlated ( r=-0.147, -0.250, both P<0.01). The security and self-control of primary and middle school students played a partial mediating role between parent-child cohesion and externalizing problem behaviors. The mediating effect consisted of two paths: one was parent-child cohesion-self-control-externalizing problem behaviors, the other was parent-child cohesion-security-self-control-externalizing problem behaviors. The effect values of these two paths accounted for 20.52% and 20.26% of the total effect respectively. Conclusion:Parent-child cohesion not only directly affects the externalizing problem behaviors of primary and middle school students, but also indirectly affects the externalizing problem behavior through the independent mediating effect of self-control and the chain mediation of security-self-control.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effect of play-based communication and behavior intervention (PCBI) on internalizing and externalizing behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Methods:From November 2018 to November 2021, 90 ASD children aged 8-30 months who registered in the Child Mental Health Research Center of the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Nanjing Medical University for PCBI ultra-early intervention training were selected and randomly assigned to the intervention group( n=60) and the waiting group( n=30) according to the ratio of 2∶1.Behavioral videos of free play between children and caregivers were collected before and after the 12-week intervention and the behavioral observation and analysis system (Observer XT) was used to code the parent-child interaction status and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors.SPSS 23.0 statistical software were used and the data were analyzed by t-test, chi-square test, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis. Results:After the intervention, the children in the intervention group had improved internalizing and externalizing behaviors (2.43±2.22, 1.88±1.91) compared with those before the intervention (4.82±3.37, 3.68±5.68), and the difference was statistically significant ( t=4.66, 2.60, both P<0.05). The children in the waiting group had no significant difference in internalizing and externalizing behaviors before (4.23±2.47, 4.00±2.18) and after intervention (4.37±2.57, 4.67±3.72) ( t=-0.23, -0.83, both P>0.05). After intervention, the children in the intervention group had fewer internalizing and externalizing behaviors than those in the waiting group, and the difference was statistically significant ( t=-3.70, -4.71, both P<0.05). The differences in internalizing behaviors (2.38±3.96, 1.80±5.37) and externalizing behaviors (1.80±5.37, -0.67±4.38) between the two groups before and after the intervention were statistically significant ( t=3.03, 2.18, both P<0.05). The results of multiple linear stepwise regression showed that the negative interaction of caregivers ( β=0.29, P<0.01) was a risk factor for internalizing behaviors. The negative interaction of children ( β=0.45, P<0.01) was a risk factor for externalizing behaviors, and the child's object status ( β=-0.30, P<0.01) and binary interaction ( β=-0.39, P<0.01) were protective factors for externalizing behaviors. In the intervention group, active child interaction, active caregiver interaction, and binary interaction increased after the intervention ( t=-6.77, -4.58, -7.72, all P<0.05), while the child's object status and the caregiver's negative interaction decreased ( t=3.37, 4.30, both P<0.05). Conclusion:The PCBI ultra-early intervention can effectively improve the internalizing and externalizing behaviors of ASD children.Improvements in internalizing behaviors may work by reducing negative caregiver interactions, and improvements in externalizing behaviors may work by increasing parent-child binary interactions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective: Mental illness is an important public health concern, often starting early in life and particularly impacting children from low-and middle-income countries. Our aims were to 1) determine, in a representative sample of public preschool 4- to 5-year old children in Brazil, the prevalence of internalizing and externalizing disorders and socioemotional development delays; and 2) to identify modifiable risk factors associated with mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders (MBDD), such as microsystem (i.e., parent-child relationship), mesosystem (social support), and macrosystem contextual factors (neighborhood disadvantage). Methods: A random sample of public preschool children was recruited in the city of Embu das Artes (São Paulo metropolitan area) (n=1,292 from 30 public preschools). Six-month prevalence of MBDD was measured using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE). Results: Six-month prevalence estimates were 25.4% for internalizing disorders, 12.1% for externalizing disorders, and 30.3% for socioemotional development delays. MBDD prevalence estimates were higher in families with stressful relationships and parental depression or anxiety, and in families with lower social capital. Conclusion: At least 25% of preschool children living in an urban area in Brazil presented a mental health disorder. These mental disorder were associated with modifiable factors such as stressful family relationships and lower social capital. Prevention and intervention measures such as family therapy are needed to decrease such high prevalence.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of behavior problems in 3750 four years old children from a birth cohort. Children were followed from birth to four years old through home visits, and questionnaires on child health and development and the Child Behavior Checklist 4-18/CBCL were applied. Prevalence rates were high (total problems 35.6%), particularly externalizing problems, which occurred in 44.4 % of children (48.3% girls; 40.6% boys; p < 0.001). Internalizing problems were less prevalent, occurring in 15.5 % of children (19.1% boys; 11.6% girls; p < 0.001). Regardless of sex, there was a higher prevalence of behavioral problems in children with younger siblings, whose mothers had less education and had no partner.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Different studies have reported the relationship of parenting styles with adjustment problems in children. However, it has not been specified which aspects of parenting styles play a central role in the manifestation of such psychological problems. Objective To increase the knowledge about the role of which parental educational styles are associated with internalizing, externalizing, and adjustment problems in Colombian children. Method Through structural equations, the fit of the proposed model was verified. Participants were 422 parents and children aged between 8 and 12 years, enrolled in public schools in Bogota, Colombia. The Parental Educational Styles Questionnaire, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the Parent Format and Self-assessment Multifactorial Adjustment test were applied. Results Family dynamics and parental practices have effects on internalizing, externalizing, and general maladjustment problems. Parental roles and practices show indirect effects on general maladjustment through externalizing problems. Discussion and conclusion The models tested show that conflicts at home, parental overload, impulsivity, permissive, ambiguous/non-consistent styles, and dysfunctional reaction to disobedience play a role in the manifestation of internalizing, externalizing, and adjustment problems in children.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The presence of externalizing behaviors in childhood has significant degrees of future self-continuity and is a risk factor for school failure and drop-out, criminal behavior, substance abuse and depen dence, suicidal behaviors and other developmental psychopathological disorders. In this review, the main aspects related to parental practices strengthening programs are analyzed as useful instruments in the context of multi-component preventive work strategies. The evidence has shown that interven tion aimed at mothers and fathers is crucial in the modification of behavioral problems in children, where training in parental skills is one of the most studied strategies and considered of higher quality when preventing the development of externalizing behaviors.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study is to identify the relation between family dynamics, externalizing behaviors and self-esteem in 158 dyads of parents whose children are between 8 and 12 years old, and who belong to a public and other private school in the Bogota city. In order to get this objective, the type of study is descriptive-correlational, quantitative and design cross-sectional. The Parent Educational Styles Assessment Questionnaire (CEEP), the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL), the parent format, and the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale were used as a measure. It found that in the group of participants of the public school there is a negative correlation between shared leisure and externalizing behavior. and between externalizing behavior and self-esteem. Finally, it found that both in public and private school participants, there is a positive correlation between familiar conflicts and externalizing behavior.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Early onset of externalizing behaviour may increase the likelihood of extensive maladaptation in future life. Recently, there has been a growing research undertaken on the role of religiosity on externalizing behaviour among Muslim adolescents. However, the mechanism underlying this relationship is still poorly understood. This study sets out to examine the relationships between adolescent religiosity, self-control, and externalizing behaviours (rule-breaking and aggressive behaviours) of Muslim juveniles in rehabilitation centre. Methods: Questionnaire assessments of adolescent religiosity, self-control, rule-breaking behaviour, and aggressive behaviour were collected from 427 Muslim adolescents aged between 13 to 18 years old in eight Tunas Bakti Schools (STB). Results: Structural equation modeling analysis indicated adolescent religiosity was negatively associated with externalizing behaviour, both directly and indirectly. The indirect association was mediated by self-control. This study suggests that greater adolescent religiosity was associated with higher self-control, which in turn lowers both rule-breaking and aggressive behaviour. Conclusion: The results highlight the important role of religiosity and self-control in preventing externalizing behaviour among Muslim adolescents. Further step towards designing preventative strategy may need to consider integrating both Islamic-based program and self-control input to enhance mental health and behavioural adjustment of Muslim adolescents.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Externalizing disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder, as well as depression are common comorbidities in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The current study focused on the temporal relationship between the onsets of these disorders and AUD, and investigated the serial multiple mediator model of externalizing disorders (e.g., ADHD) and depression on AUD. METHODS: We analyzed the mediated effects of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale motor (BIS_M) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) on Korean version of the Alcohol Dependence Scale (ADS_K) using the multiple-step multiple mediation procedure regression analysis. In addition, we comparatively analyzed different clinical characteristics in relation to conduct problems. RESULTS: The multiple-step multiple mediation procedure found the serial multiple mediated effects of the BIS_M and the BDI on the relationship between the ASRS and the ADS_K. Also, the group with conduct problem was significantly high in ADHD symptoms, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, legal problems and alcohol-related problems, compared to the group without conduct problems. CONCLUSION: To sum up, the results of this study show that ADHD symptoms in childhood could exert significant effects on the severity of AUD in adulthood, and both disorders might be mediated by the externalizing disorders characterized by the core feature of motor impulsivity, and depression serially. Thus, the treatment of preceding disorders in accordance with developmental stages is an overarching clinical component for preventing the subsequent development of AUD and for its treatment.
