ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose: To assess the effects of the preoperative application of artificial tears combined with recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor on the ocular surface function and inflammatory factor levels after operation in cataract patients complicated with dry eyes. Methods: A total of 118 cataract patients (118 eyes) complicated with dry eyes treated from February 2019 to February2020 were assigned to control and observation groups (n=59 eyes/group) using a random number table. One week before the operation, the control group was administered 0.1% sodium hyaluronate eye drops (artificial tears), based on which the observation group received Beifushu eye drops (recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor), both 6 times daily for 1 week. A comparison was made between the scores of clinical symptoms and the indices of ocular surface function, inflammatory factors in tears, and oxidative stress indices before and after the operation. The ocular surface function was evaluated by an ocular surface disease index questionnaire, tear film breakup-time assay, Schirmer's I test, and corneal fluorescein stain test. The inflammatory factors in tears were measured. Results: No significant differences were noted in the general data and clinical symptom score, ocular surface disease index, tear film breakup-time, Schirmer's I test score, fluorescein stain score, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, lipid peroxide, and total antioxidant capacity before treatment between the 2 groups (p>0.05). After treatment, the clinical symptom score, ocular surface disease index, fluorescein stain score, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, malondial-dehyde and lipid peroxide declined significantly, and tear film breakup-time, Schirmer's I test score, superoxide dismutase, and total antioxidant capacity increased in both the groups. The improvements in the clinical symptom score as well as in the indices of ocular surface function, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress were more prominent in the observation group than in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Artificial tears combined with recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor before operation. significantly improved the ocular surface function, reduced inflammatory factors in tears, and alleviated dry eye symptoms after operation in cataract patients.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify the facial anthropometric parameters that predict the difficulty during femtosecond (FS) laser. Methods: This was a single?center observational study was conducted on participants between the ages 18 and 30 years who were planned for FS?LASIK (femtosecond laser?assisted laser in situ keratomileusis) or SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, India. The front and side?facing images of the participants were analyzed using Image J software to measure different anthropometric parameters. The nasal bridge index, facial convexity, and other parameters were measured. The difficulty faced by the surgeon during docking was recorded for each subject. The data were analyzed on Stata 14. Results: A total of 97 subjects were included. The mean age was 24 (±7) years. Twenty?three (23.71%) subjects were females while the rest were males. Difficulty in docking was seen in 1 (4.34%) female and 14 (19%) males. The mean nasal bridge index was 92.58 (±4.01) in subjects with deep?set eyes and 89.72 (±4.30) in normal subjects. The mean total facial convexity was 129.28 (±4.24) in deep?set eyes, and 140.23 (±4.74) in normal subjects. Conclusion: Total facial convexity appeared as the most important feature, with the value being less than 133° in most subjects with unfavorable facial anthropometry

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To derive a formula for accurate axial length (AL) assessment using routine ultrasound in silicone oil?filled eyes, where optical biometry is unavailable or not possible. Methods: This was a prospective, consecutive, nonrandomized study of 50 eyes of 50 patients conducted in a tertiary care hospital in North India. AL measurements were taken using both manual A?scan and IOL master, both in silicone oil?filled status and 3 weeks after silicone oil removal. A correction factor of 0.7 was used for AL adjustment in oil?filled eyes. The corrected AL (cAL) was compared with IOL master values in oil?filled eyes. Agreement analysis was carried out using Bland Altman plot. Linear regression analysis was done using uncorrected manual AL to find a new equation. Data was analyzed using Stata 14. A P value <0.05 was taken as significant. Results: The study included 40 males and 10 females, with an age range of 6–83 years (mean 41.9 years). The mean AL of the oil?filled eye as measured by manual A?scan was 31.76 mm ± 3.09 and by IOL master was 24.7 mm ± 1.74. Linear regression analysis was performed in randomly selected 35 eyes of the observed data to obtain a new equation: predicted AL (PAL) = 14 + 0.3 × manual AL. The mean difference between PAL and optically measured AL with silicone oil in situ was 0.98 ± 1.67. Conclusion: We propose a new formula for better prediction of the correct AL in silicone oil?filled eyes using ultrasound?based AL measurement.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate dry eyes in children with vernal kerato?conjunctivitis (VKC) and correlate it with symptoms, clinical findings, and ocular surface analysis (OSA) parameters. Methods: Children with clinically diagnosed VKC underwent complete ophthalmological examination, Schirmer’s testing, modified ocular surface disease index (OSDI) scoring, Bonini grading, fluorescein tear?film break?up time (TBUT), VKC – Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus (CLEK) scoring, and OSA. Children with a TBUT of < 10 s were defined to have dry eyes. The above?mentioned parameters were compared between dry eye and non?dry eye VKC children. Results: The mean age of the 87 children included in the study was 9.1 ± 2.9 years. Dry eyes were seen in 60.9% [95% confidence interval (CI); 51% to 71%]. The mean TBUT was 13.4 ± 3.8 and 5.9 ± 1.9 s in non?dry and dry eye groups, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean value of Schirmer’s test was 25.9 ± 9.8 and 20.8 ± 8.6 mm in the non?dry and dry eye groups, respectively (P = 0.01). The two groups did not differ in their OSDI scores, Bonini grading, and CLEK scores. The OSA parameter of non?invasive break?up time (NIBUT) was 8.3 ± 3.2 s in non?dry eye group and 6.4 ± 2.9 s in dry eye group, P = 0.008. The lower lid Meibomian gland (MG) loss was 7.4% in non?dry eye group and 12.2% in dry eye group, P = 0.028. Other OSA parameters did not differ significantly among the two groups. Conclusion: Dry eyes are seen in two?thirds of pediatric VKC. Evaluation of dry eyes should be incorporated in their clinical evaluation. Among OSA parameters, NIBUT and lower lid MG loss are associated with dry eyes in pediatric VKC patients.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Rhodnius prolixus is the most important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in the northern part of South America. The compound eyes in adults of R. prolixus are involved in the nocturnal flight dispersion from sylvatic environments into human dwellings. During this behavior, the artificial lights play an important role in attracting R. prolixus; however, it is still not clear whether the compound eyes of this species use different visible wavelengths as a cue during active dispersion. We applied electrophysiological (electroretinography or ERG) and behavioral (take-off) experiments in a controlled laboratory setting to determine the spectral sensitivity of the compound eyes and the attraction of R. prolixus adults to discrete visible wavelengths. For the ERG experiments, flashes of 300 ms at wavelengths ranging between 350 and 700 nm at a constant intensity of 3.4 µW/cm2 were tested after adaptation to darkness and to blue and yellow lights. For the behavioral experiments, the adults were exposed to nine visible wavelengths at three different intensities, and their direction of take-off in an experimental arena was established with circular statistics. The ERG results showed peaks of spectral sensitivity at 470-490 nm and 520-550 nm in adults, while behavioral experiments showed attractions to blue, green and red lights, depending on the intensity of the light stimuli. The electrophysiological and behavioral results confirm that R. prolixus adults can detect certain wavelengths in the visible spectrum of light and be attracted to them during take-off.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of Ahmed glaucoma valve implanting through the ciliary sulcus in the treatment of intraocular lens(IOL)glaucoma.METHODS: Retrospective case series study. The clinical data of 18 patients(18 eyes)with IOL glaucoma from February 2020 to February 2022 in Liuzhou Red Cross Hospital were collected. All patients underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implanting through the ciliary sulcus. The visual acuity, intraocular pressure, corneal endothelial cell density, corneal endothelial cell loss rate and complications were observed before operation and 1, 3, 6 and 12mo after operation.RESULTS: The mean intraocular pressure before operation was 43.41±5.33 mmHg. The mean intraocular pressure at 1, 3, 6 and 12mo after operation were 12.11±3.26, 13.82±4.12, 13.54±3.83 and 15.80±4.35 mmHg respectively. The mean intraocular pressure at each follow-up point after operation was significantly lower than that before operation(F=203.40, P&#x003C;0.01). The corneal endothelial cell density at each time point after surgery was lower than that before surgery(F=6.18, P&#x003C;0.01), but there were no significantly differences in the density and loss rate of corneal endothelial cell at 1, 3, 6 and 12mo after surgery(P&#x003E;0.05). Furthermore, the overall surgery success rate was 83%.CONCLUSIONS: Ahmed glaucoma valve implanting through the ciliary sulcus is safe and effective in the treatment of IOL glaucoma, and the damage to corneal endothelial cells is mild. The corneal endothelial cells density doesn't decrease with time after surgery.

ABSTRACT

The theory of "liver opens at the eyes" was first seen in Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon of Medicine, which is the ancient people's summary of the connection between the liver and the eyes. The theory of "liver opens at the eyes" suggests the characteristic of "co-damage and co-recover of liver and eyes". It has been found in clinical practice that liver diseases and eye diseases often occur together, and "liver and eyes co-recover" is an ideal choice. The key to achieving "liver and eyes co-recover" is to analyze its pharmacological material basis and mechanism. With the development of modern medicine, more and more evidence indicates that the liver and eyes have complex and close relationships in physiological and pathological aspects. In a pathological state, there is a phenomenon of "liver and eyes co-damage", and after the intervention of traditional Chinese medicine, "liver and eyes co-recover" occurs. "Liver and eyes co-damage and co-recover" can be explained through the "co-material basis and co-action mechanism". On this basis, the research group tentatively proposed that the liver and eyes had "four common characteristics" (4CCs), namely "co-damage, co-recover, co-material basis, and co-action mechanism" from the theoretical connotation of traditional Chinese medicine, clinical practice, and molecular biology. Additionally, the group also took the intervention of Prunella vulgaris, traditional Chinese medicine, for removing liver fire and improving eyesight on immune liver injury (ILI) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) as examples to analyze 4CCs. This project aims to deeply analyze the scientific connotation of the theory of "liver opens at the eyes", reveal the common characteristics and biological essence of liver and eyes, explore a new research paradigm of "liver and eyes co-recover", and provide a reference for the study of common problems of multi-organ associated diseases.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the clinical application of water-filling with "four-eyes" sign under the guidance of ultrasound in nasal-jejunum intubation for critical patients. Methods:This study was a randomized controlled trial. Eighty patients who needed indwelling nasobenteric tube were selected from June 2021 to April 2022 in the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University. They were divided into control group ( n=40) and experimental group ( n=40) by systemic randomization. For the patients in the experimental group, the intubation was performed by water-filling with "four-eyes" sign under the guidance of ultrasound. For the control group, the traditional method was applicated under the guidance of ultrasound. Using abdominal X-ray as the gold standard of successful pylorus posterior catheterization, the result of catheterization, time of operation, efficiency of positioning in the two groups were analyzed and compared. Results:In the experimental group, 38 cases were successfully intubated, 2 were failed; in the control group, 27 cases were successfully intubated, 13 were failed, and all the failed cases in the control group were then successfully intubated again by using method of the experimental group. The success rate of tube placement in the experimental group was 95.0% (38/40), which was higher than 67.5% (27/40) in the control group ( χ2 = 9.93, P<0.05). The average time of operation in the experimental group was (45.2 ± 14.2) min, which was significantly lower than (70.2 ± 17.7) min in the control group, the difference was significantly different ( t=-5.51, P<0.05). The specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic rate of nasal-jejunum intubation positioning in the experimental group were 100.0% respectively, higher than 38.4%, 77.7%, 72.4%, 45.4%, 65.0% in the control group; the false positive rate, false negative rate in the experimental group were both 0, lower than 22.2%, 61.5% in the control group, with statistically significant differences( χ2 values were 4.69- 16.97, all P<0.05). Conclusions:Water-filling with "four-eyes" sign under the guidance of ultrasound in nasal-jejunum intubation was a new method which can shorten the operation time and increase the success rate for intubation. It has relatively high positioning accuracy and possess valuable clinical application.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To analyze the incidence and disease burden of foreign body in eyes in 1990 and 2019 of China.METHODS: Using the global burden of disease database in 2019, the incidence and disability adjusted life years(DALY)of foreign body in eyes in 1990 and 2019 of China were analyzed among the total population and different age groups of China.RESULTS: In 2019, the number of cases of foreign body in eyes in China was 11.2535 million, and the incidence was 79.12/10 000. The number and incidence of foreign body in eyes in 2019 decreased 12.87% and 27.49% respectively compared with those in 1990. In 2019, the DALY of foreign body in eyes in China was 181 200 person-years, and the DALY of foreign body in eyes in 2019 increased by 6.14% compared with 1990. In 2019, the age groups with the highest number of cases, incidence and DALY were all 20-54 years old, which were 8 012 600, 103.97/10 000 and 102 500 person-years, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the incidence of foreign body in eyes in China showed a decreasing trend, average annual percentage change(AAPC)=-1.2%(95%CI: -1.8~-0.7, P&#x0026;#x003C;0.05), and DALY rate also showed a decreasing trend, AAPC=-0.6%(95%CI:-2.1~0, P&#x0026;#x003C;0.05). From 1990 to 2019, the incidence and DALY rate of foreign body in eyes in China and the World showed a downward trend. In 2019, the incidence and DALY rate of foreign body in eyes in China were significantly higher than those in the World and regions with different sociodemographic index(SDI).CONCLUSION: Although the incidence and DALY rates of foreign body in eyes in China have been decreasing in recent years, China has a large population base and the burden of foreign body in eyes is still large in the World. Active preventive measures should be taken to reduce the disease burden of foreign body in eyes.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of intraoperative aberrometry (IA) in intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation and compare it with conventional IOL formulas. Methods: This was a prospective case series. Eyes with visually significant cataract and axial hyperopia (AL <22.0 mm) underwent IA?assisted phacoemulsification with posterior chamber IOL (Alcon AcrySof IQ). Postoperative spherical equivalent (SE) was compared with predicted SE to calculate the outcomes with different formulas (SRK/T, Hoffer Q, Haigis, Holladay 2, Barrett Universal ? and Hill?RBF). Accuracy of intraoperative aberrometer was compared with other formulas in terms of mean absolute prediction error (MAE), percentage of patients within 0.5 D and 1 D of their target, and percentage of patients going into hyperopic shift. Results: Sixty?five eyes (57 patients) were included. In terms of MAE, both Hoffer Q (MAE = 0.30) and IA (MAE = 0.32) were significantly better than Haigis, SRK/T, and Barrett Universal ? (P < 0.05). Outcomes within ±0.5 D of the target were maximum with Hoffer Q (80%), superior to IA (Hoffer Q > IA > Holladay 2 > Hill?RBF > Haigis > SRK/T > Barrett Universal ?). Hoffer Q resulted in minimum hyperopic shift (30.76%) followed by Hill?RBF (38.46%), Holladay 2 (38.46%), Haigis (43.07%), and then IA (46.15%), SRK/T (50.76%) and Barrett Universal ? (53.84%). Conclusion: IA was more effective (statistically significant) in predicting IOL power than Haigis, SRK/T, and Barrett Universal ? although it was equivalent to Hoffer Q. Hoffer Q was superior to all formulas in terms of percentage of patients within 0.5 D of their target refractions and percentage of patients going into hyperopic shift

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Ocular manifestations in psoriasis are due to direct eye involvement with psoriatic plaques or psoriasis?related, immune?mediated inflammatory processes. The commonly reported pathologies are blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, dry eyes, and uveitis. Limited data is available on the ocular findings in psoriasis patients in India. In this study, we evaluated various ocular changes associated with moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, treatment?naive psoriasis patients with Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score of more than 10 were included. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, Schirmer’s score, tear film breakup time (TBUT), corneal and conjunctival staining score, and meibomian gland dysfunction score were noted. All these parameters were re?evaluated at 8 weeks of follow?up after systemic treatment. Results: Sixty-eight patients were enrolled in the study. The most common ocular pathologies observed in this study were tarsal hyperemia and anterior blepharitis in 128 (94.1%) and 64 (47%) eyes, respectively. Mild, moderate, and severe dry eyes were seen in 26 (19.1%), 14 (10.2%), and 34 (25%) eyes, respectively. Thirty?nine (57.3%) patients complained of significant difficulty watching television or digital screen. In 21 patients evaluated on follow?up at 8 weeks, cornea and conjunctiva’s ocular surface staining score increased and TBUT decreased significantly. Conclusion: The most common ocular pathologies observed in this study were anterior blepharitis and moderate dry eye, which significantly affected most patients’ daily routines. Screening patients with greater severity of psoriasis would help in early management of such problems.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The map topography analysis gives an idea of temporal dynamics of electric fields, which is reference independent, making the results unambiguous. These topographic maps remain stable for 80 to 100 milliseconds, abruptly shifting to a new topographic map configuration and remains stable in that state are called the ‘functional microstates’ as described by Lehmann et al (1987). There has been no study done in the resting state eye closed and eye open conditions showing the microstate maps in healthy Indian subjects in resting eyes open and resting eyes closed condition using 128 channel EEG. So our study aim was to assess the microstates in resting eyes closed and eyes open condition. And to compare the microstate parameters such as mean duration, global explained variance (GEV) and time coverage between eyes closed and eyes open condition. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional and observational study on 20 indian subjects (Mean age- 26.65 and (SD) - 2.78 years) was done on resting eyes closed and eyes open conditions. After EEG acquisition using 128 channel EEG machine, EEG was preprocessed and microstate analysis using CARTOOL software was performed on the EEG data. Results: After microstate analysis four maps topography were obtained. There was statistically non-significant difference observed in microstate maps between resting eyes closed and resting eyes open condition for the all parameters i.e. mean duration, time coverage and GEV. Conclusion: Our findings suggests that, both eyes closed and eyes open conditions were similar to each other in terms of stability and predominance of Maps

ABSTRACT

[au]

The objective of this work is to describe clinical cases and case series related to ophthalmological changes in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. A narrative/descriptive review of clinical cases and case series was performed. Based on data searches with pre-defined descriptors, 17 studies were integrated in the review. Among the main themes identified, the following stand out: conjunctival changes, retinal changes and ophthalmoparesis. The picture of changes in the conjunctiva was prevalent in relation to the others. This review included not only eye disorders in adults, but also in children and adolescents. The study draws attention to the fact that the ocular changes were described as isolated alteration, precipitating alteration and simultaneous alteration to the respiratory condition. It is concluded that ocular conditions go beyond conjunctival alterations, although these are predominant, with retinal alterations, ophthalmoparesis and the unusual Miller Fisher syndrome. New trials will be able to assess, in fact, the representativeness of eye problems in the epidemiological chain of COVID-19. [au]

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Remnant lens epithelial cells (LECs) within the capsular bag (CB) undergo epithelial?to?mesenchymal transition (EMT) and acquire a myofibroblast phenotype, depositing extracellular matrix (ECM) components, leading to posterior capsular opacification (PCO). This study histopathologically analyzes the LEC?to?myofibroblast transition and de novo ECM component deposition (i.e., smooth muscle actin (SMA) and fibronectin (FN) expression) and determines the intraocular lens (IOL) and patient factors associated with these changes. Methods: In total, 190 CBs with IOLs were removed from donor eyes. Digital images were obtained, and PCO was graded using published software (ADOS, Medical Parachute). Automated immunohistochemistry was performed using anti?SMA to detect EMT and anti?FN to document ECM remodeling. Slides were digitized and analyzed using the Positive Pixel Count v9 algorithm. Linear regression and Poisson regression were performed (P < 0.05). Results: SMA positive expression decreased as the time of IOL implantation increased (P < 0.0001). Positivity of SMA and FN demonstrated a positive correlation (P = 0.0002). Controlling for confounding factors in Poisson regression, hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials showed higher FN and SMA expression when compared to silicone material lenses (FN; P = 0.018; P < 0.0001, SMA; P = 0.001; P = 0.003, respectively). The square optic design had 29% higher SMA positivity compared to the opti?edge design (P = 0.042). One?piece haptic lenses had higher SMA expression compared to three?piece haptic (P = 0.042). A higher risk of expression of SMA and FN was seen in patients with a history of smoking, hypertension, and glaucoma (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that SMA and FN expression is different according to IOL design and patient factors, thus indicating that LEC changes depend on lens biocompatibility. Therefore, by analyzing the histopathological composition of PCO by using LECs, further insight into the characteristics of IOLs that are important for biocompatibility can be ascertained.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of Kane formula with Sanders Retzlaff Kraff/Theoretical (SRK/T) and Barrett Universal II in predicting intraocular lens (IOL) power in Indian eyes. Methods: This retrospective study conducted in a tertiary care eye hospital. Data from patients having uneventful cataract surgery with Tecnis ZCB00 IOL implantation were obtained from Lenstar and electronic medical records. Eyes were divided into subgroups based on axial length (AL) as short (<22.0 mm), medium (22 mm), and long (>24 mm). The predicted refractive outcome for each patient was calculated after optimizing the lens constant. Prediction error was calculated by subtracting the predicted spherical equivalent from achieved spherical equivalent 1 week post?surgery. The mean absolute error (MAE) and median absolute error (MedAE) and percentage of eyes within 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 D were calculated for each formula. Friedman test, Cochrane Q test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Out of the 350 eyes included in the study, we found that without lens constant optimization, Barrett formula performed better than SRK/T and Kane (P < 0.0001). Over the entire range of axial lengths, Kane formula performed slightly inferior compared to Barrett and SRK?T, both of which performed equally well (P = 0.006). On subgroup analysis, Kane formula performed inferiorly for medium eyes as compared to the other two. No significant differences were noted between the formulae for short and long eyes. Conclusion: Kane formula did not outperform Barrett Universal II and SRK/T in Indian eyes

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The sensilla of insects play important roles in odor, taste, the feeling environment, and some sensory functions, which are closely associated with insect host locating, feeding, habitat searching, courtship, mating, and oviposition. In this study, we used a scanning electron microscope to observe the external morphology of nymph and adult Frankliniella occidentalis sensilla on antennae, compound eyes, legs, mouthparts, wings and tail. The results show that three main types of sensilla are located on the antennae: sensilla trichodea, sensilla chaetica, and sensilla basiconica. Among them, sensilla trichodea are the most abundant, followed by sensilla chaetica. Sensilla basiconica on antennae are divided into seven sub-styles, including longer sensilla (L-sensilla basiconica, long sensilla basiconica), shorter sensilla (angle sensilla basiconica, bud sensilla basiconica), and thicker and bigger sensilla (stick sensilla basiconica, fork sensilla basiconica, and finger sensilla basiconica). Only two fork sensilla basiconica were found, located on the dorsal part of the first flagellum subsegment and the ventral part of the second flagellum subsegment, respectively. Seven sensillum types were found on the legs: sensilla trichodea, sensilla chaetica, sensilla basiconica, sensilla ear washing buob-shaped, mamillary sensilla, sensilla campaniform, and Böhm bristle. About 60% of them are sensilla chaetica. Only one sensillum type was found on compound eyes: sensilla chaetica. In addition, some sensillum types were also found on the mouthparts, wings and tail, respectively. In the study, we observed the type, morphology, and distribution of sensilla on antennae, legs, compound eyes, and other regions of nymph and adult F. occidentalis, forming a base for future electrophysiological and behavior experiments on F. occidentalis.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To provide guidance for more accurate measurement of axial length(AL)of difficult measuring eyes by comparing the differences in the AL of the patient's difficult measuring eye with three methods of the sitting position, supine position A-scan and Lenstar 900(Lenstar, LS900). METHODS: Clinical case-control study. We selected 102 cases(102 eyes)including cataract patients with combined silicone oil filled, vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment and patients with dislocation of the lens or IOL in Zhengzhou Second Hospital from May 2019 to September 2020. AL were measured using LS900 and A-scan on sitting position and supine position respectively, and the results of the three methods were statistically analyzed.RESULTS: The detection rates of LS900 and A-scan axial measurement were 83% and 100% respectively. Three methods of A scan in sitting position, supine position and LS900 to measure the overall AL, silicone oil group, lens dislocation group and vitreous hemorrhage group, the differences were statistically significant(P&#x003C;0.001), The mean values of AL measured by overall A-scan, supine positions of silicone oil group, supine position of lens dislocation group and vitreous hemorrhage group were statistically significant differences with LS900 measurement(all P&#x003C;0.05), while there was no statistical difference between the results of the overall sitting position and the difficult measuring eye groups' sitting position compared with the LS900 measurement of AL. The three measurements showed good consistency within the 95% consistency range, but the result of A-scan on sitting position was closer to LS900.CONCLUSION: Changing the conventional decubitus position to the sitting position can improve the accuracy of the measurement results and provide clinicians with more reliable guidance for the treatment of patients with difficult measuring eyes of A-scan axial measurement, especially in diseases with altered ocular structure.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To explore the efficacy and safety of foldable capsular vitreous body(FCVB)in the treatment of severe ocular trauma and silicone oil dependent eyes.<p>METHODS:A retrospective study. Totally 20 patients who were underwent FCVB implantation due to severe ocular trauma and silicone oil reliance conducted in our hospital from May 2018 to October 2019 were select as observation group, 10 previous severe eye trauma patients without FCVB implantation as control group. The visual acuity(VA), intraocular pressure(IOP), exophthalmos, eye axis length, retinal reattachment, and complications of preoperative and postoperative in observation group and control group were recorded. A 1a follow-up was carried out to compare the changes in the observation indicators of each group so as to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the FCVB.<p>RESULTS: Before and 1a after operation, there were no statistically significant differences in VA, eyeball protrusion, and axial length of the observation group, but IOP was significantly increased. The preoperative eyeball protrusion and axial length of the control group were larger than those of the observation group, but they were smaller than those of the observation group during the 1a follow-up. The eyeball protrusion and axial length of the control group were also significantly reduced 1a after the operation compared with the preoperative baseline. Retinas were well attached, silicone oil emulsification, secondary glaucoma, endophthalmitis and any other severe adverse event were not even occurred in the observation group.<p>CONCLUSION:FCVB could effectively and safely prevent eyeball atrophy in the treatment of severe eye trauma and silicone oil dependent eyes.
