ABSTRACT

Abstract Few studies deal with military firemen's work/health relationship in national literature, among which many focus only on pathological indicators and/or physical consequences, not discussing their health and life needs at work. Aiming at analyzing this relationship under a wider, humanized perspective of heroes, an exploratory and methodologically innovative study was conducted in two industry blogs. Invisible or socially little known realities concerning the investigated group's work process were unveiled, such as precarious labor conditions, illnesses, role deviation, humiliation, and dissatisfaction. These realities show the need for acknowledging military firemen as workers who lack decent working conditions and comprehensive healthcare, particularly regarding their mental health.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Circadian cognitive and physical rhythms plus 24 h patterns of accidents and work-related injuries (WRI) have been verified in numerous studies. However, rarely, if ever, have 24 h temporal differences in both work performance and risk of WRI been assessed in the same group of workers. We explored in a homogenous group of French firemen (FM) 24 h patterns of both lag time (LT) response duration to emergency calls for medical help (ECFM) for life-threatening out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA), used as a non-specific index of work performance, and WRI. Our studies demonstrate rather high amplitude statistically significant 24 h patterns of the two variables. The LT response duration was twice as long ~0500 h (slowest response) than ~1600 h (fastest response). In the same group of FM, the actual number WRI/h was greatest ~1600 h and lowest in the early morning hours. However, the 24 h pattern of the relative risk (RR) of WRIs, i.e., per clock hour number of WRI/(total number of responses to emergency calls x number of FM at risk per response), was very different, the RR being greatest ~0200 h and lowest in the afternoon. The 24 h pattern in LT response duration to ECMH for OHCA and RR of WRI was strongly correlated (r=+0.85, P<0.01), with the nocturnal trough (slowest response) in LT response duration coinciding with the nocturnal peak RR of WRI. These findings indicate the requirement for circadian rhythm-based interventions to improve the nocturnal compromised work performance and elevated risk of WRI of shift-working FM.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVE: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OCHA) is a public health problem in which survival depends on community initial response among others. This study tries to analyze what's the proportional cost of enhancing such response by involving the police corps in it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively an OCHA registry started on June 2009. We contrasted a model with limited number of ambulances and police based first response. RESULTS: Mortality was 100 percent, response times high and 10.8 percent of the victims were receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by bystanders. In 63.7 percent of the events the police arrived before the ambulance, in 1.5 percent of these cases the police provided CPR. The cost for each saved life was of 5.8-60 million Mexican pesos per life with only ambulance model vs 0.5-5.5 million Mexican pesos on a police first response model with 12 ambulances. CONCLUSIONS: In Queretaro interventions can be performed taking advantage of the response capacity of the existing police focused on diminishing mortality from OCHA at a lesser cost than delegating this function only to ambulances.

ABSTRACT

This article discourses the configuration of the professional identity of the Military Firemen from the region of the Greater Florianópolis, SC. To contemplate such general objective, the specific objectives and the theoretical referencial focused on: characterization of the profession, identity, work, professional choice and quality of life. As method, the research was defined as exploratory and descriptive, delineated as a survey. An half-open questionnaire was used. The data was analyzed in a qualitative and quantitative form. Participated in the research, 266 "praças" of the 1st Firemen Battalion. With this research, it was possible to conclude that these professionals feel themselves carried through with their profession although complaints exist, which are not on the content of the profession, but on the lack of conditions to fulfil it and on organizacional aspects. These citizens "live" the profession even outside their working hours. It was also possible to verify that, as well as the theories affirm, the work is a constituent factor of the identity of the citizen.

ABSTRACT

Deleterious effects of alcohol abuse are widely known and described. Prevention of alcohol abuse is particularly important in specific professional categories, i.e. workers subjected to constant risk and stressful situations, like firemen. Prevention may be crucial to reduce possible consequences arising from alcohol abuse in such professional categories. In the present paper we illustrate the use of a particular approach based on prevention, the Screening and Brief Intervention (TIB), on firemen from Juiz de Fora, MG. The TIB has been applied in association with other evaluation strategies and has proved to be viable and efficient as health care prevention in such context.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the job stress factors of subway workers and firemen and to develope appropriate stress management systems for the works places. METHODS: The study subjects comprised 1,826 male subway workers and 538 male firemen residing in Daegu metropolitan city. The Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) questionnaire was used. RESULTS: The median values of the study subjects were lower than the reference values. The categories of physical environment and insufficient job control were more stressful to firemen while the organization system category was stressful to both subway workers and firemen (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in the stress factor of the interpersonal conflict category. Among the firemen, the physical environment category was more stressful to field work department workers than to desk workers (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The study results suggested that interpersonal conflict and organization system categories are stressful to male subway workers and firemen. Especially, effective control of firemen's physical environment stress factor is needed.
