ABSTRACT

Objective To obtain the physical anthropological characteristics of head and face of Tajik adults in Aketao, and to explore their ethnic origin through cluster analysis with other populations. Methods According to Anthropometric Method, 286 Tajik adults (male 121, female 165) in Aketao, Xinjiang were recruited and analyzed. The survey included 12 observation indicators of head and face, 19 measuring indicators of head and face, 12 indexes of head and face and its classification. Results The indicators of head length, head breadth, head height, minimum frontal breadth, face breadth, bigonial breadth, nose breadth, mouth breadth, auricular height, physiognomic facial height, morphological facial height, nasal length, nasal height, physiognomic ear length, physiognomic ear breadth, zygomatic protection, nasal root height, nasal profile, nasal base of Tajik adults in Aketao had gender differences (P < 0. 05). Compared with the Tajik adults in Aketao and Taxkorgan, the type indicators of head and face of zygomatic protection, direction of eyeslits, nasal root height, nasal base, maximal diameter of nostrils, lobe types, nreadth-height index of head type, morphological facial index type, nasal index type had regional differences (P<0. 05). The cluster analysis showed that Tajik adults have unique characteristics of head and face, which were grouped separately and were more similar to Iranians. Conclusion Tajik adults in Aketao have the characteristics of head and face of the West Eurasian. The characteristics of head and face of Tajik adults in Aketao and Taxkorgan are somewhat different. From characteristics of head and face, they may be related to the Eastern Iranian tribe.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the relationship between the head and face traits of Han, Li, Uygur and Tibetan population. Methods From 2008 to 2011, sixteen head and face measurement traits were measured in Chinese young individuals from Jiangsu, Hainan, Xinjiang and Tibet, with sample size of 1034 (348 Han, 165 Li, 305 Uygur, 216 Tibetan). The gender difference analysis, commonalities and differences between populations and principal component analysis were earned out. Results Most of the sixteen head and face measurement traits showed significant gender differences, the mean measurements of most features of males were bigger than those of females in four populations. Samples of the four populations usually had brachycephaly and hyperbrachycephaly. Most Han, Li and Uygur belonged to euryprosopy. Han, Li and Tibetan were typically mesorrhiny. The homogenous features of head and face of the four populations were shown. However, the head and face of the four populations also had some heterogeneous features. For instance, Han had the broadest face and Li had the broadest nose among all four populations. Furthermore, Uygur had the narrowest nose and Tibetan had the narrowest face. The result in population relationships presented that the head and face measurement traits of Han and Li were relatively similar, while those of Uygur and Tibetan were narrower. Conclusion There are commonalities and differences in the head and face measurement traits among the four populations. The group relationship between Han and Li is relatively similar, and that between Uygur and Tibetan is relatively close. The homogeneity and heterogeneity between populations can provide data and theoretical support for genetics, forensic science and other fields.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the understanding of the head and face protection of the health care workers in operating room of Peking Union Medical College Hospital during the corona virus disease-19(COVID-19) pandemic. Methods The knowledge of head and face protection of health care workers in the operating room was evaluated based on the non-registered questionnaires for protection measures collected on-line.Results The survey was conducted in two phases. In the first phase(COVID-19 outbreak),153 questionnaires were collected. In the second phase(when Beijing lowered the emergency response to level 3 and normalized the epidemic prevention and control),101 questionnaires were collected. The results showed that 98% of health care workers had used any form of protective devices during the pandemic and anesthesiologists had the highest usage rate(93.0%)of ear-loop face mask with eye shield.During the pandemic, health care workers mainly used goggles(71.2%)for protection to diagnose and treat the patients with fever and ear-loop face mask with eye shield(56.2%)for protection to diagnose and treat the non-fever patients. In the first-and second-phase survey,43% and 68% of health care workers still used protection, and they mainly used face shield(50.0% and 56.5%)and ear-loop face mask with eye shield(56.1% and 68.1%).Conclusions During the pandemic, more than 90% of the health care workers in the operating room of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were aware of head and face protection.Different healthcare workers in the operating room had different choices of head and face protection, and more than 40% of them would still keep such protection during the normalized stage of pandemic prevention and control.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore a novel strategy to repair traumatic soft tissue defects in the head and face by tissue expansion in the early stage. Methods Eighteen patients with traumatic soft tissue defects were treated with thorough debridement leaving the wound unclosed or simply closed with thin split-thickness scalp skin grafting, and adjacent expander implantation in the early stage and expanded flap transposition in the second stage. Results There were 11 male patients and 7 female patients ranging in age from 3.5 to 40 years [mean,(19.4±12.2) years],with average 15 months follow-up (range,3-67 months). The average expansion time was 74.3 days (range,53-96 days). The total of 18 patients with 22 expanders were treated with satisfactory results. All the flaps survived and the skin color, texture and contour well matched to those of the peripheral tissue.Only one complication of infection happened in the 18 cases (5.56%) and total 22 expanders (4.55%),which was similar to the rate reported in the literature. There were no any other complications related to the expander. Conclusions Debridement and tissue expansion in the early stage have been proved a more effective strategy to repair traumatic soft tissue defects in the head and face, which can not only achieve satisfactory color, unbulky and well matched texture similar to normal, but also can avoid unnecessary donor site injuries and does not increase the infection rate of tissue expansion.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the value of image analysis technology of polari-light dermoscopy (PD) in diagnosing head and face tumors. Methods We randomly collected the head and face tumors from the patients in this hospital, and then diagnosed them with naked eyes and PD, respectively. After making sure the diagnosis by histopathology, we analyzed the results retrospectively. Results We summarized the diagnostic signs of 211 head and face tumors on dermoscopy, which shown a great specificity. Its diagnosis rate reached to 92.89 %, obviously higher than that (69.67 %)with naked eyes. Due to clinical misdiagnosis and erroneous treatment, the recurrence rate of skin lesions was 19.91 %. The top 3 of head and face tumors, in turn, was seborrheic keratosis, melanocytic tumor and basal cell carcinoma. Conclusions PD is a non-invasive image analysis technology, which is especially applicable to the early diagnosis of head and face tumors. It can make sense in decreasing blind biopsy, directing surgical excision areas effectively, and selecting reasonable remedy. It also has great significance in the recovery and beauty of skin lesions.

ABSTRACT

For developing Digital Image Expert System in rhinoplasty, the accurate and reliable Digital Image Measuring System must be first set up, and the data from the Digital Image Measuring System must be reliable with the data measured by hand. The measuring system mainly consists of a computer with an image processing board, a TV camera and a head fixing device. Ten adults were selected randomly and some indexes of head and face were measured with the measuring system and by hand respectively. The reliability of the measuring system was confirmed by the statistical analysis of data measured. Finally, the results were also discussed.
