ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to compare demographic characteristics, comorbidity, and health habits of elders with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and elders with cognitively normal function (CNF). METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the Database of the Seoul Dementia Management Project for 5,773 adults age 60 and above. RESULTS: The MCI group showed an older age distribution, but there was no significant education difference between the two groups. Elders with MCI had more diabetes and stroke than elders with CNF. In subgroups, the same findings were observed in women, but not in men. While more men with MCI had hypertension compared to men with CNF, there was no significant difference in hypertension between the two groups for women. Elders with MCI, men in particular, had a lower prevalence of obesity than men with CNF. MCI individuals did less exercise compared to individuals with CNF. While there were no significant differences in alcohol consumption and smoking between MCI and CNF groups, the over 80's subgroup with MCI reported more alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION: Findings from this study could be helpful in designing community-based dementia prevention programs and health policies to reduce the prevalence of dementia or related cognitive impairments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The adolescent years are a window of opportunity to influence lifelong bone health. Bone acquisition is accelerated within the genetic potential by lifestyle choices. But some adolescent girls do not care about healthy lifestyle and nutrient uptake. Therefore, we investigated the nutrition and health behavior relating to bone acquisition. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was administered to high school girl students from 4 general and 4 commercial high schools in Uijongbu, Incheon, Suwon, and Yongin. The data was gathered from 378 girls by self-reported questionnaire, which included age, height, weight, health behavior relating to bone acquisition and food-frequency. Nutrient uptake was assessed by DIET PLUS 3.0 program. RESULTS: Girls with bone acquisition inhibiting health habits were reported. Among subjects, 12.2% had regular alcohol intake, 21% smoked daily, 77.7% did not exercise regularly, 58% had light-activity, 42.2% experienced weight reduction trial, 30% had low body weight and 72.8% had less than 2 meals a day. In nutrient uptake, 33.1% of subjects took less calcium uptake and 4% less protein uptake than recommended daily allowance. Comparing general and commercial high schools, commercial students had more bone acquisition inhibiting health habits. CONCLUSION: There were many high school girl students with bone acquisition inhibiting health and eating habits. Family physicians need to promote and educate good health habits with a balanced meal associated with bone acquisition in girls, especially commercial high school students.

ABSTRACT

Body antioxidant status is an important factor in the prevention of many chronic diseases caused by oxidative stress, especially in the elderly and is affected by health-related habits, such as smoking, drinking and regular physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between these health-related habits and plasma antioxidant status in the elderly. Plasma antioxidant status was examined by determining plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C, A, E, beta-carotene), total antioxidant status (TAS) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS). The subjects included 225 elderly persons aged over 60 years (63 males, 162 females) living in the Ulsan area. They were interviewed to collect data on their general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise and alcohol consumption by means of questionnaires. Their dietary intakes were obtained by means of semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (FFQ). The study population was divided into two or three groups according to their smoking, drinking, and exercise status. The ratio of smoker, drinker and exerciser was 16.7%, 31.0% and 44.2% respectively. The dietary antioxidant vitamin intakes were not significantly different among groups of smoking and drinking status, but tended to be higher in non-smokers and non-drinkers than in smokers and drinkers. Plasma vitamin C and beta-carotene levels were significantly higher in non-smokers, but plasma vitamin A and TBARS levels were significantly lower in non-smokers than in smokers. Plasma TAS was not significantly different among the smoking groups, but showed a tendency to decrease with an increase in the number of packyear. Plasma vitamin C and beta-carotene levels of the non-drinkers were higher than those of drinkers and past-drinkers, but plasma vitamin A, E, TBARS and TAS showed no difference among the groups of drinker. All vitamin intakes of the exercisers were slightly higher than those of the non-exercisers, but vitamin C intake was significantly higher in female exercisers than in non-exercisers. Plasma beta-carotene levels were significantly higher in male exercisers and plasma vitamin A, C, E, TAS and TBARS levels tended to be higher in exercisers than in non-exercisers. These results suggested that change to non-smoker, modulation of alcohol consumption and regular exercise could enhance antioxidant defences against reactive oxygen species and might increase the likelihood of a healthier life span.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adolesoents experience many physical, psychological and social stresses. It is well known that there is a strong relationship between stress and illness. It has been told that good health goes with good health habits. We examine the relationship between several health habits and stress in adolescents. METHODS: We surveyed adolescents and their parents who visited an adolescent clinic in a general hospital for 8 manths. Structured questionnaires about status of several health habits and BEPSI(The Brief Encounterr Psychosocial Instrument) score were used. BEPSI is a quick stress measure that is composed of several items. RESULTS: This study included 486 adolescents and their 486 parents. Average number of good health habits was 3.2+/-1.7 and average BEPSI score was 2.1+/-0.6. The group that had more good health habits tended to mark lower BEPSI scores(p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between stress and each habit except sleep time of more than 7hrs, regular exercise and hobby. Smoker group and alcohol drinker group showed higher BEPSI scores, respectively. The conversation time between parents and adolescents had a significant relationship with BEPSI scores. CONCLUSIONS: Several health habits were significantly connected with stress in adolescents. We can assume that good health habits and conversation with their parents are important in the management of stress in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress is associated with physical illness such as coronary artery disease and hypertension. Daily life habits being able to affect physical health and are associated with mental stress. We studied the relationship between physical illness and stress amount so far. However, the investigation about the stress and the health habits to affect disease directly was not studied enough. Eventually we tested this investigation to know the relationship between stress amount and health habits. METHODS: We measured stress amount and health habits for a month(from May 1 to May 31, 1997) through the people who had already received health screening and were working as researchers. We used 147 results out of 212. Health habits were investigated about 6 articles out of "Breslow's 7 Health habits" and stress amount was measured by evaluation scale made by Lee, Pyoung-sook. RESULTS: There were no differences in amounts of stress of subjects according to age, years in work, hours of sleeping, having breakfast or not, the frequency of exercise and body mass index(BMI). But there were significant differences in amounts of stress of subjects according to drinking amount, smoking or not, and health habit index(P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Drinking and smoking appeared to be health habits related to the amounts of stress. Prospective studies are needed ? find a causal relationship between health habits and stress amount.
