ABSTRACT

Handa et al., 1986 noted that in India, more than 87 plants are used in 33 patented and proprietary multi-ingredient plant formulations for liver protection. Siddha Materia Medica illustrates a safer, cheap and potential hepatoprotective polyherbal decoction ‘Pidangunaari kudineer’ comprised of three herbal ingredients such as leaves of Premna tomentosa, pericarp of ripe fruits of Terminalia chebula, rhizomes of Curcuma longa. This formulation is very effective against hepatitis in the clinical practice. The goal of this systematic review of the literature was to summarize the literature on the safety and hepatoprotective activity of above herbs. A manual search of bibliographies of papers identified through an Internet search using multiple search engines. Textbooks on herbal medicine and their bibliographies were also searched. Result and Conclusion: A large number of in vitro, in vivo, human clinical studies on those herbs were identified. These included studies on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihepatoxicity induced by acetaminophen and antituberculosis drugs, anticarcinogenicity, antimicrobial properties and also phytocompounds were identified to justify the safety and hepatoprotective efficacy. Ethnic background of these herbs results liver protection make Pidangunaari Kudineer for further screening for hepatoprotection.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the protective effect of Ganyu capsule on the experimental hepatic injury in mice and rats. Methods Acute hepatic injury was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 0.1 %CCl4 10mL/kg and D-galactosamine 500 mg/kg in mice;Cirrhosis was induced by 40 %CCl4 adding with variousagents in rats. The biochemical parameters such as serum ALT were examined and the histopathological changes of hepatic tissue was measured. Results Ganyu capsule could obviously inhibit the increase of serum ALT and AST activity and reduce the content of collagen in liver and the deseverity of hepatic fibrosis. Conclusion Ganyu capsule has protective effects on the acute and chronic hepatic injury in mice and rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the protective effect of Xiaoyao Tablet(XYT)(Radix Bupleuri, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Poria, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Herba Menthae, Roasted ginger) on liver. Methods: Using the acute hepatic injury model induced by Tetrachloride and D-galactosamine (CD-GaIN) in rats or mice, we observed the influence of XYT on ALT and AST level in the serum, MDA level and glutathione-s-transferase(GST) activity in the liver homogenates. The pain-killing effect was tested by body twisting model induced by glacial acetic acid and by hot plate model in mice. Results: The XYT reduced the serum ALT level significantly in the acute hepatic injury model in rats and mice. In the CCl 4 reduced acute hepatic injury mice model, XYT decreased the MDA level and increased the GST activity in liver significantly, also it reduced the MDA level in the serum. The XYT reduced twisting number in mice induced by glacial acetic acid. In the hot plate test, the pain threshold was increased. Conclusion: The drug has the similar hepatoprotective function to Xiaoyao Pills.
