ABSTRACT

Background- Oral submucosal fibrosis (OSMF) is a common precancerous condition predominantly affecting the oral cavity. There are several contributing factors to its pathogenesis, areca nut chewing being the primary culprit. OSMF reversal is difficult once the disease sets in. Hence, after its diagnosis, staging becomes imperative as it affects the treatment plan. Several classification methods have been developed by various authors to categorize the disease based on its clinical, functional, and Histopathological characteristics. The main aim to conduct this study was to correlate clinical and histopathological staging. Materials & Methods- This study involved 30 patients who had been diagnosed with OSMF both Clinically and Histopathologically. All 30 patients were classified and were categorized according to their clinical and functional stages after inspection. Following this, histopathological grading was done. Results- The statistical analysis showed that there was a wide similarity between the clinical and functional staging. However, no significant similarity or correlation was found between the clinical and functional staging with its corresponding histopathological grades. Conclusions- Our study concluded that there is strong correlation between clinical and functional grading.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is involved in the carcinogenesis process and tumor progression into cancer. It has been reported recently, there was a COX-2 expression at breast cancer. Patients with a high level of COX-2 expression can have a local recurrence and decrease life expectancy, and an increase of COX-2 expression in tissue likelihood has prognostic value. This study aims to correlation cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2) expression and histopathological grading in locally advanced breast cancer patient in AW Sjahranie Hospital in Samarinda city. Methods: This study was an observational study with crossectional design to analysis the correlation COX-2 expression and histopathological grading in patients with locally advanced breast cancer and using data analysis with the Chi-Square test. Results: The results showed that the correlation was not significant (P>0.05), where there was no correlation of COX-2 expression with histopathological grading (P=0.221) and there was no correlation with the last condition of patients (P=0.61). Although patients with breast cancer high grade and moderate grade percentages were significantly higher in positive COX-2 than in COX-2 negative expression. Conclusions: There were no correlation between COX-2 expression and histopathological grading and there was no significant relationship between COX-2 expression and the last condition, as evidenced by the statistical test results showing that the differences were not significant.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of crystallization test in screening of oral potentially malignant disorders (PMDs) and oral cancer. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients of oral PMD, 30 patients of oral cancer and 40 normal healthy people were selected. One drop of blood was collected and added to 1 cc of double-distilled water at room temperature to get a final dilution of 6% hemolyzed blood. 0.1–0.2 cc of this blood sample is added to 10 cc of 20% cupric chloride solution and further is subjected to crystallization test. Results: In the normal healthy group, the pattern was typical with an eccentrically placed center of gravity with needles arranged in radiating fashion. Whereas in oral PMD and cancer groups, there was “transverse form” formation. This test had sensitivity and specificity of about 83.33% and 86.84% for PMDs group and 96.30% and 86.84% for oral cancer group respectively. Conclusion: Crystallization test was found to be sensitive, reliable, economical and less-invasive procedure for screening of oral PMDs and oral cancer.

ABSTRACT

Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a precancerous condition associated with the use of areca nut in various forms. There are very few reports to correlate the clinical stage to histopathological grading in OSF. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based study was conducted on 80 oral Submucous Fibrosis cases who visited our hospital in Jamnagar.. A detailed history of each patient was recorded along with a clinical examination. Biopsy was performed for histopathological correlation. Clinical stage of the disease in terms of the ability to open one's mouth was correlated with histopathological grading. Results: The male to female ratio of OSF cases was 3:1. All forms of areca nut products were associated with OSF. Chewing of paanmasala was associated with early presentation of OSF as compared to chewing of the betel nut The the result of all conservative therapy fails to reverse the disease. Conclusion: result of study recommend primary prevention for prevention of OSF.
