ABSTRACT

Holistic medicine is an interdisciplinary field that integrates all types of biological information (proteins, small molecules, tissues, organs, external environmental signals, etc.) to provide predictable and operational models for healthcare and disease treatment. Despite the global and integrative character of this discipline, scientific evidences to clarify the mechanism of holistic medicine is still lacking. Systems pharmacology, as a newly developed discipline based on the interdisciplinary and integration of classical pharmacology, computer technology, bioinformatics, and network pharmacology, has systematically studied the interaction between drugs and the human body, as well as its law and nature at the molecular, cellular, organ and network levels. Since its birth in 2011, this discipline has been widely used in the research of the promotion of holistic medicine, compound analysis, the development of new drugs, and interpretation of basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this paper, in order to provide new methods and ideas for the modernization of holistic medicine, the authors introduce the research ideas of systems pharmacology of TCM in detail, and the mechanism of holistic medicine in the treatment of complex diseases is explained by sorting out the researches of systems pharmacology on multi-component, multi-target, multi-pathway, multi-function, compatibility of TCM, etc.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease (zoonotic) caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium, which infects the intestine. It occurs in humans and in different pets, farm and wild animals. Its role is underestimated and little is known about its epidemiology, due to the low interest it draws and the limited availability of diagnostic methods. The population health, both human and animal, is related to a close interaction of three factors: the environment, pathogens, and population, which determines the state of health and disease; some of the diseases considered as emerging, that appeared in the last years. The approach, known as "One Health", is a growing global strategy being adopted by a diversity of organizations and policy makers in response to the need for integrated approaches. This approach may be relevant to a wide range of global development goals. There is more and more talk about holistic health. It seems that we are more aware that health is not reduced to something purely biological, but affects the whole person. It is not only seeing the patient globally, it is starting from the complexity of the human being and the whole world crossed by vulnerability and interacting with the totality of the subjects.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The modern medicine in Japan made a remarkable progress according to development of Western medicine and further studies made it possible to understand almost of all diseases as cell and gene abnormalities using scientific approach such as imaging diagnosis or blood biochemistry. Kampo medicine, on the other hand, developed especially in Japan and is defined as holistic medicine because many diseases can be induced by responses of whole body against various causes instead of cell or organ abnormalities.
Recently EBM (Evidence based medicine) is required in the clinical field.
Though the evidence cannot be obtained easily in the clinical field, the concept of EBM seems to be important in achieving clinical practice even from the stand view point of cost-benefit and many trials began to accept this EBM in the field of Western medicine.
On the other hand, usefulness of Kampo medicine on various diseases was elucidated by means of Western analysis such as double blind test and the “Shou”, unique diagnostic method for Kampo medicine, turned out not to be necessary in all cases for the best treatment. Doctors engaging in Kampo medicine began to change their attitude to accept EBM by their newly considered method including conventional “Shou”
Both medicines, Western and Kampo medicine, have various features and merits or demerits for the treatment of diseases respectively. Therefore, a trial to combine Kampo and Western medicine should be taken into consideration, to improve the clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

The effects of psychosocial education on undergraduate medical students were evaluated in an open trial. Undergraduate medical students were exposed to psychosomatic medicine and, in particular, holistic medicine as part of their undergraduate medical education. Almost all students (94.9%) reported addressing “extramedical” clinical problems with a holistic approach (n=98). Psychological, social, and economic problems were mentioned in 64.3%, 50.0%, and 5.1% of reports, respectively. Problems in relationships between members of the medical staff and patients were included in 37.8% of reports. Self-evaluation with the Egogram Check Lists by students who had undergone clinical practice revealed scores of “Critical Parent, ” “Nurturing Parent, ” “Adult, ” “Free Child, ” and “Adapted Child” of 2.59 1.57, 4.59±1.89, 4.79±1.54, 4.85±1.64, and 4.65±1.64, respectively (n=82). “Adult” scores were higher after clinical practice than before (n = 32, p<0.02, Student's paired t-test). Clinical practice seemed to help students mature and become better able to cope with problems objectively. Education in psychosomatic medicine is an important component of undergraduate medical education.

ABSTRACT

Traditional dental education focuses on providing adequate knowledge and skills to students. Dental care was delivered on the basis of this knowledge-and skills-oriented concept. Recently the relationship between dentists and patients has been emphasized, and the improvement of dental education, such as the introduction of attitude education, has been discussed. Our department has used attitude education, which creates a close human relationship between doctors and patients. One training program requires patients' participation. Understanding health creation (holistic medicine) could not be taught with traditional educational methods or without patients' participation. In this program, students interacted with patients in the classroom and came to understand the stable doctor-patient relationship, not as the idealized relationship taught by traditional dental education but as a human-human relationship founded on understanding mutual existence and reality. Consequently, the students could understand the meanings for the following questions: “What are characteristics of a stable relationship?” and “How should health be created?”. In this paper, the contents and the methods of our programs are introduced and the students' evaluation is discussed.
