ABSTRACT

The study presents the effect sizes, their confidence intervals, ratings, and visualizations for the 2018 normative update of the R-1 Nonverbal Intelligence Test, since the statistically calculated differences based on the p-value offer tenuous evidence against the null hypothesis and do not serve as a proof of clinical significance. We used the normative sample of the instrument, consisting of 5,595 adults of both sexes, aged 18 to 65 years, from the five Brazilian geographic regions and subdivided by elementary, middle, and high school levels. The results showed medium to large effect sizes in the comparison between elementary and high school levels; large to very large in the relation between elementary and high school; and small to medium effect sizes between high school and high school levels. It was concluded that the statistically observed differences, by means of variance and Tukey's post-hoc analyses reflect a real effect when considering the impact of the education level variable on test performance. It was understood that normative studies of the instrument reflect a real impact when considering the variable under study, and should include the effect size and their respective confidence intervals.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The study compared the intelligence test profiles of Tourette's Disorder (TD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and TD with ADHD (TD+ADHD) groups. METHODS: The Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-third edition (K-WISC-III) and Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-fourth edition (K-WISC-IV) were administered to 13 children and adolescents with TD, 17 children and adolescents with ADHD, and 15 children and adolescents with TD+ADHD. Each parameter was compared among the groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: The mean scores of the freedom from distractibility/working memory index (FD/WMI) and the digit span and arithmetic subtests of the TD+ADHD group were significantly lower than those of the TD group. CONCLUSION: According to the intelligence test results, the comorbid ADHD+TD group showed a significant decrease in working memory compared to the TD group. These findings are similar to those of previous research on cognitive functions and suggest that the TD+ADHD comorbid and TD alone groups exhibit different endophenotypes. The results also imply that WISC-III and WISC-IV, the most commonly used intelligence tests clinically, are effective in evaluating cognitive functions such as attention. Further research is required to confirm these results.

ABSTRACT

Background: The negative effects of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on cognition are well documented in previous studies; however, distinct mechanisms of these effects are still a matter of debate. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has an important role in brain functions specially memory and learning and was reported to be low in IDA in animal studies. Objective: This study was thus designed to estimate BDNF serum level in patients suffering from IDA and correlate its level to their cognitive function. Study Design: Cross sectional case-control study. Place and Duration of the Study: The Outpatient Clinic in the Children`s Hospital, Ain Shams University, between May, 2009 and March, 2010. Methods: The study was conducted on 27 child suffering from IDA (hemoglobin <11gm/dl and serum ferritin<12ng/ml) with a mean age of 7.96±3.06 years. Full history taking and thorough clinical examination were done. Complete blood count, serum ferritin and BDNF were measured. Cognitive assessment using Wechsler intelligence test was performed for enrolled children. Fifty healthy age and sex matched children were enrolled as controls. Results: Wechsler intelligence test showed significantly lower verbal, performance and total IQ values among IDA patients compared to controls. Total IQ score showed significant positive correlation with hemoglobin level and significant negative correlation with red cell width (RDW). Although BDNF level was not significantly lower in IDA patients, it showed a significant positive correlation with object assembly. Multiple regression analysis using total IQ as a dependent variable showed that RDW was the most determinant factor that affected IQ scores. Conclusion: Wechsler IQ test results were adversely affected in IDA patients. BDNF level was not significantly lower in IDA children but it showed a significant positive correlation with one of Wechsler IQ test items in such patients. Larger scale studies are recommended to further investigate BDNF as a possible mediator that disturb cognitive functions in IDA and explore other mediators.

ABSTRACT

The presence of a considerable amount of items with differential functioning can make a test less valid. Therefore, the existence of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) in the intelligence test SON-R 2½-7[a] was investigated. This is the abridged edition of the SON-R 2½-7 with normatization and validation studies realized in various European countries. The data of the Brazilian normatization sample of 1,200 children were used to verify the presence of DIF in relation to gender and region using the IRT method. Of a total of 60 items, 5 items were indicated as having DIF for gender and 13 items as having DIF between regions. It was concluded that the majority of the items were adequate, which makes the use of the test feasible in a national context.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed the usefulness of intelligence test in assessing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: The medical records of 312 patients with ADHD who visited the child psychiatry department in one university hospital in Seoul, Korea, were reviewed. Demographic data and scores on the Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III (K-WISC-III) and Korean-Conners' Parent Rating Scale (K-CPRS) were analyzed. To assess the relationship with comorbidities, ADHD subjects were classified as; externalizing disorders, internalizing disorders, tic disorders, and no comorbidities. RESULTS: Verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ) was significantly higher than performance IQ (PIQ)(102.6+/-14.44, 99.2+/-14.48, p<.001). Using mean scatter method, subtest scores such as 'information, similarities, digit span and coding' were significantly lower than mean scores of sum of subtests of VIQ or PIQ (p<.05). Regarding comorbidities, children with externalizing disorders exhibited. Lower scores on 'information and vocabulary' than other groups (p=.008). Children with no comorbidities exhibited higher scores on 'similarities and object assembly' than children with externalizing/internalizing disorders (p=.001) and also on 'comprehension' than children with externalizing disorders (p=.006). For subtypes of ADHD, children with hyperactive-impulsive type had higher scores on 'comprehension' than children with inattentive and combined type (p=.004). CONCLUSION: These results suggested that intelligence test might provide useful information for assessing ADHD.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Although benign rolandic epilepsy (BRE) is a benign condition, it may be associated with a spectrum of behavioral, psychiatric, and cognitive disorders. This study aimed to assess the cognitive and other neuropsychological profiles of children with BRE. METHODS: In total, 23 children with BRE were consecutively recruited. All children underwent sleep electroencephalography (EEG) and were assessed on a battery of comprehensive neuropsychological tests including the Korean versions of the Wechsler intelligence scale for children III, frontal executive neuropsychological test, rey complex figure test, Wisconsin card sorting test, attention deficit diagnostic scale, and child behavior checklist scale. RESULTS: The study subjects included 13 boys and 10 girls aged 9.0+/-1.6 years. Our subjects showed an average monthly seizure frequency of 0.9+/-0.7, and a majority of them had focal seizures (70%). The spike index (frequency/min) was 4.1+/-5.3 (right) and 13.1+/-15.9 (left). Of the 23 subjects, 9 showed frequent spikes (>10/min) on the EEG. The subjects had normal cognitive and frontal executive functions, memory, and other neuropsychological sub-domain scores, even though 8 children (35%) showed some evidence of learning difficulties, attention deficits, and aggressive behavior. CONCLUSION: Our data have limited predictive value; however, these data demonstrate that although BRE appears to be benign at the onset, children with BRE might develop cognitive, behavioral, and other psychiatric disorders during the active phase of epilepsy, and these problems may even outlast the BRE. Therefore, we recommend scrupulous follow-up for children with BRE.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at identifying what aspects of personality are modified after one and two years of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in adults attending a free university healthcare service in São Paulo, Brazil. The instruments were the Rorschach and the WAIS-III tests which were administered before and after one and two years of treatment. The participants were 34 adult individuals, both genders. After one year of psychotherapy in the Rorschach method there was an increase in effective and adaptive interpersonal relationship, an enhancement in sensitiveness related to the capacity of modulating affect, the need for close contact as well as the arousal of feelings of discomfort associated with intensification of self-regard, and a decrease in narcissistic tendencies. As well as in WAIS-III, there was an increase in motivation, attention and speed processing.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine reliability and validity of Chinese Cognitive Ability Scale (CCAS).Methods:The CCAS was administered 321 children, 275 adults, 32 patients with brain damage, and 31 children with mental retardation.Out of them, 26 children were tested with WISC-CR and 26 adults with WAIS-RC.Results: The test-retest reliability coefficients of subtests and scales ranged from 0.732 to 0.894, 0.919 to 0.960 for children, 0.859 to 0.937, 0.968 to 0.981 for adults; The reliability coefficients for children (quick coding was omitted) ranged from 0.810-0.928 (Split-half), 0.737-0.923 (Cronbach's ?) and 0.737-0.945 (generalizability) for subtests, 0.939-0.976,0.898-0.965 and 0.898-0.965 for scales; Coefficients for adults ranged from 0.829-0.948, 0.747-0.941 and 0.747-0.941 for subtests, 0.945-0.979, 0.915-0.967 and 0.915-0.967 for scales; The CCAS IQs were high correlated with WAIS-RC IQs (VIQ=0.775,PIQ=0.621,FIQ=0.724) and WISC-CR IQs (VIQ=0.888,PIQ=0.779,FIQ=0.886) , the CCAS VIQ, PIQ, and FIQ were 5.3,9.2,and 7.8 points less than WAIS-RC, and 2.0,7.2,and 5.0 points less than WISC-CR; Comparing with normal groups, mean IQs of brain damaged adults(VIQ=80.50,PIQ=80.59,FIQ=78.91) and mental retardation children(VIQ=43.68,PIQ=49.77,FIQ=44.06)were much lower. Conclusion: The Chinese Cognitive Ability Scale has excellent retest stability, internal consistency reliability, convergent and discriminant validity.
