ABSTRACT

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common orthopedic disease. Western medicine treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome include conservative drug treatments, temporary external fixations, and operative treatments. Cases of patients being treated with Kampo medicine have been reported. The patient was an 80-year-old woman, who visited our clinic because of numbness in her right hand. She was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. She was administrated with a Kampo medicine, keishito. After 7 days, her symptoms were relieved, and after 14 days her symptoms had resolved. We could not find any reports showing that keishito was effective in treating carpal tunnel syndrome. We believe that her symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome were caused by eiefuwa (nutrient-defense disharmony) and were successfully treated with keishito.

ABSTRACT

We present two cases of night sweats due to eiefuwa (deficiencies of nutrients and defenses) that were successfully treated with Kampo medicine. Case 1 was that of a 64-year-old man with perspiration during sleep and slight fever, and Case 2 was that of a 78-year-old man with perspiration during sleep and common cold-like symptoms. Case 1 was administered with saikokeishito, and his symptoms quickly disappeared. Case 2 was administered with common cold drugs and saikokeishito initially, but the treatment was ineffective. Therefore, keishito was administered, and the patient's symptoms disappeared within 2 days. Sweating and common cold-like symptoms were successfully treated with Kampo medicine for the diagnosis of eiefuwa. Further, we discuss the various descriptions of eiefuwa in the literature.

ABSTRACT

A 65-year-old woman had left should pain for two months. She felt moderate pain in the left shoulder and she could not raise her left hand. She was diagnosed with shoulder periarthritis by an orthopedist, but her pain had not improved with medication and rehabilitation. So she came to our hospital. She had left shoulder pain with arthrogryposis and muscle atrophy over the course of the next two months. She had a floating and relaxed pulse with spontaneous sweating, so she was diagnosed with greater yang wind strike per Kampo medicine. Her left shoulder pain was improved with keishito for two weeks, and three months later she could raise her left hand. Greater Yang is characterized by floating pulse, headache, pain in the nape of the neck, chills, fever, general pain, and joint pain. And Greater Yang Wind Strike is characterized by fever, spontaneous sweating, mild chill and relaxed pulse. Keishito is useful for in Greater Yang Wind Strike, and our patient improved with keishito. However, keishito is generally used for the early stage of a common cold, and there have been a few reports that keishito is effective for chronic disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report of keishito being effective for shoulder periarthritis, and we believe that keishito is a valid option for the treatment of chronic pain in Greater Yang Wind Strike.

ABSTRACT

Based on our own 35 cases treated with kobokushichimotsuto as well as our predecessors' experience and their opinions, we investigated the drug's mechanism of action and its background indications. Our predecessors' opinions seem to be divided into two groups. Group A : An external pattern/syndrome (a keishito indication) of external contraction, followed by an interior heat pattern/syndrome (a kobokusammotsuto indication) appear. Mechanism of disease wise, this means that both external and internal patterns/syndromes exist at the same time. Because an internal pattern/syndrome is heavier than an external one, both patterns/syndromes are simultaneously treated, by making both medicinals bound together. Group B : Internal heat due to yang exuberance with yin debilitation is the mechanism of disease here. In group A, cause of disease is classed as a true heat pattern/syndrome. In group B, depending whether the internal heat belongs to either true heat or false type, deficiency and excess of pulse/abdominal patterns/syndromes change, and appetite differs. In either group, no peony is used to cope with the chest pattern/syndrome induced by the progression of gastric heat into the chest. Our cases consisted of upper respiratory illnesses with appetite loss, gastrointestinal diseases with chest oppression, respiratory diseases and intestinal obstructions. Kobokushichimotsuto, however, can be applied to neuroses, mental disorders and low back pains.

ABSTRACT

Introduction : We evaluated the efficacy of keishito and maobushisaishinto with reference to keikyososooshinbuto, for patients feeling cold, by means of multiple regression analysis.
Case reports : We reported a patient with an upset stomach whose severe coldness was improved as the stomach condition was cured by adding keishito to maobushisaishinto. Moreover, the combination of keishito and maobushisaishinto was effective for a patient feeling cold, with appetite loss, general fatigue and stiffness of the joints (case 1), a patient feeling cold, with chill, general fatigue, heavy feeling in the stomach, and prone to catch colds (case 2), and a patient feeling extremely cold, with general fatigue and menstrual pain (case 3).
Subjects and Methods : In this study, the subjects were 43 patients who reported feeling cold. They were treated with keishito and maobushisaishinto according to their Sho for more than one month. The relationships between the improvement of cold sensation and 52 other factors, such as symptoms noted at their first medical examination, were evaluated by means of multi-dimensional cross-sectional analysis.
Results : The factors of chilly or unpleasant wind and coldness of the whole body were significant.
Discussion : The factors of coldness in the whole body with chill, and headache without diarrhea were important for improvement of cold feeling with keishito and maobushisaishinto.

ABSTRACT

We report four patients suffering from dumping syndrome treated effectively with Keishito and its additional prescription. Case1was a 57-year old male who received subtotal gastrectomy 30 years ago. After the operation he felt shaking sensations and eyes flickering after meals for10minutes to 4 hours. These symptoms tended to occur along with hunger. After taking Keishito, these symptoms improved. Case 2 was a 63-year old male who received subtotal gastrectomy 7 years ago. In recent years, he has had noticeable sweat and fatigability 20-30 minutes after meals. After taking Keishito, these dumping syndrome symptoms disappear. Case 3 was a 71-year old female who received subtotal gastrectomy 9 years ago. Thereafter, cold sweats and dizziness came to appear regardless of what she ate. After taking keishikashakuyakuto or shokenchuto the aforementioned symptoms disappeared. Case 4 was a 72-year old female who received subtotal gastrectomy 2 years ago. Sweats and hot flushes began to occur after meals for 30 minutes to 3 hours, from last July. These symptoms were improved simply by licking candy. After taking Keishito, these symptoms also disappeared.
