ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: Body composition assessment in breast cancer survivors (BCSs) is essential to plan feasible dietary strategies for sarcopenic obesity prevention. Objective: Studying the effect of an individualized nutrition intervention according to socioeconomic status and grocery shopping behavior on BCSs relative fat mass (RFM). Methods: BCSs attending an academic medical center were studied; participants saved all 1-week supermarket tickets and answered a grocery shopping consumer preference survey. RFM was assessed at baseline and after the 3-month nutrition intervention. Nutrition plans were based on the dynamic macronutrient meal-equivalent menu method (MEM) and dietary guidelines for BCSs. Results: Thirty-three BCSs completed the study and 91% of them presented obesity or overweight at baseline. After the intervention, BCSs lost 1.6 kg (p < 0.01) of body weight, 1.8 kg (p < 0.01) of RFM, 3 cm (p < 0.01) of waist circumference, and 2.4 cm (p < 0.01) of hip circumference, while no changes were observed in fat-free mass (p = 0.6) and arm bone-free muscle area (p = 0.7). Conclusions: RFM and body weight in breast cancer survivors decreased after an individualized nutrition intervention according to socioeconomic status and grocery shopping consumer behavior. Based on the participants’ food preferences and consumer behavior, plant-based protein diet plans cost less than the animal-based protein diet plans.

ABSTRACT

Guava, is one of the most promising fruit crops of India and is considered to be one of the exquisite nutritionally valuable and remunerative crops. We are unaware of any report describing macro and micronutrient dynamics in fruit at different growth stages of guava. Micronutrients play an important role in production and their deficiency lead in lowering the productivity. For conducting this experiment fruit of variety Allahabad Safeda, L-49, Lalit, Shweta, Arka Kiran, Salithong, Kimchu were collected at different stages like Marble, Stone hardening & Harvest stage for estimation of primary nutrient (N, P, K), secondary nutrient (Ca, Mg) & micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu). The nutrient content particularly N, K, Mg, and Mn are highest in variety of Allahabad Safeda, whereas, P and Ca are highest in variety Lalit. Micronutrient Fe recorded highest in Salithong while Zn and Cu were accumulated maximum in Arka Kiran and Kimchu respectively. Recommendation of fertilizer at various growth stages is paramount for precise nutritional management for which the requirement of different nutrition is essential.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The mGluR1 (metabotropic glutamate receptor 1) gene, a G protein–coupled receptor, is known to mediate perceptions of umami tastes. Genetic variation in taste receptors may influence dietary intake, and in turn have an impact on nutritional status and risk of chronic disease. We investigated the association of mGluR1 rs2814863 polymorphism with lipid profiles and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, together with their modulation by macronutrient intake in Korean adults. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 8,380 Koreans aged 40-69 years participating in the Anseong and Ansan Cohort Study, which was a part of the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study (KoGES). Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and blood chemical analysis. RESULTS: Carriers of C allele at mGluR1 rs2814863 was associated with decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and increased triglyceride as compared to carriers of TT. Also, carriers of the C allele showed higher fat intake and lower carbohydrate intake than those with carriers of TT. After adjustment for multiple testing using false-discovery rate method, the significant difference of HDL-C, triglyceride, dietary fat, and carbohydrate across genotypes disappeared. Gene-diet interaction effects between rs2814863 and macronutrients intake were not significantly associated with HDL-C and triglyceride levels. However, carriers of C allele demonstrated significantly higher odds of CVD {odds ratio=1.13, 95% CI=1.02-1.25} compared with carriers of TT. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support significant associations between the mGluR1 rs2814863 genotype and CVD-related variables in Korean adults. However, these associations are not modified by macronutrient intake.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between macronutrient composition and metabolic syndrome (MetS) incidence in Korean adults. Data were obtained from a cohort of 10,030 members aged 40 to 69 years who were enrolled from the 2 cities (Ansung and Ansan) between 2001 and 2002 to participate in the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study. Of these members, 5,565 participants, who were free of MetS and reported no diagnosis of cardiovascular disease at baseline, were included in this study. MetS was defined using the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III and Asia-Pacific criteria for waist circumference. MetS incidence rate were identified during a 2-year follow-up period. Baseline dietary information was obtained using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the quartiles of percentages of total calorie from macronutrients consumed and MetS incidence. In analyses, baseline information, including age, sex, body mass index, income status, educational status, smoking status, alcohol drinking status, and physical activity level was considered as confounding variables. Participants with the second quartile of the percentages of carbohydrate calorie (67%–70%) had a 23% reduced odds ratio (95% confidence interval, 0.61–0.97) for MetS incidence compared with those with the fourth quartile after adjusting for confounding variables. The findings suggest that middle aged or elderly Korean adults who consume approximately 67%–70% of calorie from carbohydrate have a reduced risk of MetS.

ABSTRACT

Aims: Diabetes as a health problem, leads to many pathological effects. Many studies showed that micronutrients found in these patients are not in accordance with the recommendations of RDA*. The aim of this study was to assess the adequacy of nutrient intake in diabetic patients attending diabetes clinics in Markazi Province of Iran, there by basic information on the nutritional status of this group of patients was obtained and early survey started. Study Design: Cross - sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Clinical Research Unit, Markazi Province, Arak, Iran, between April 2012 and July 2013. Methodology: In a random sample procedure 250 diabetic patients referring to diabetic clinics in Markazi Province was assessed. A questionnaire was completed for each patient. This form included some demographic data and laboratory food frequency questionnaire (FFQ -168) and a 24-hour dietary recall. After completing the questionnaire the amount of energy and nutrients in each food and beverage ingredients were calculated by using food composition table USDA designed in a food processing software. The standard amounts of Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA 1989) were used to evaluate the adequacy of the diet. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient, chi-square and Independent Samples T-test, Paired Samples T-test the SPSS16 statistical software were used. Results: In this study, about 32% of patients had normal weight and 68% of them were overweight or obese. The mean of fasting blood glucose was 212.5 mg /dl. Percentage of energy derived from carbohydrate, protein and fat, was 58.8 and 13.6 and 27.6% respectively. Percentage of energy from saturated fat was around 17%. Among male patients, energy intake, fiber, unsaturated saturated fat energy percentage, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamin A, selenium, vitamin K, vitamin C and vitamin E intake values are significantly different from RDA values​​, the amounts of iron, percent of energy from saturated fatty acids, and vitamin E intakes were significantly higher than RDA values and other nutrient intakes were lesser than the RDA. Among female patients, fiber intake, percentage of energy from unsaturated and saturated fat, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, vitamin B1, folic acid and vitamin E values are significantly different from RDA values, among of these amounts, energy from saturated fat, zinc, vitamin B1 and vitamin E ​​were significantly higher than RDA values and other nutrient intakes were lesser than the RDA. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the nutritional adequacy of food intake in diabetic patients, is not desirable. The amount of energy from carbohydrate was higher than RDA recommendations. Percent of energy from saturated fatty acids was higher than standard. Percent of energy from saturated fatty acids was higher than standard. Despite the apparent over-weight and obesity of patients, there was nutrient deficiency in them. In overall, in this area choice of balance diet and training are necessary.

Introducción: La leche materna es recomendada como el alimento más adecuado en el primer año de vida, ya que proporciona los sustratos necesarios para el crecimiento del recién nacido. En los últimos años se ha ampliado el estudio de la composición de la leche materna y su relación sobre el efecto de la nutrición en los recién nacidos de pre termino. Objetivo: investigar la composición de macronutrientes en leche materna de recién nacidos prematuros (<33 semanas). Métodos: análisis de contenido de proteínas, carbohidratos y lípidos en muestras de leche materna de recién nacidos prematuros (menor que 33 semanas) recolectadas longitudinalmente, según protocolo de estudio. Resultados: Se presenta variabilidad en muestras recolectadas en tres semanas consecutivas de edad posnatal, dando contenido de proteína que vario de 1,34g/dl (DS +/- 0.11) a 1,05 g/dl (DS +/- 0.10) con (p menor que 0,05). Hidratos de carbono vario de 6,20 g/dl (DS +/- 0.17) a 6.77 g/dl (DS+/-±0.22) con (p menor que 0,05). Lípidos vario de 4.10 g/dl (DS +/- 0.39) a 4.33 g/dl (DS +/- 0.26) con (p=0,075).Discusión: Estos datos proporcionan una visión más detallada de la ingesta de nutrientes de los recién nacidos prematuros alimentados con leche materna.


Introduction: Breast milk is recommended as the most suitable food in the first year of life, as it provides the substrates required for growth of the newborn. In recent years it has expanded the study of the composition of breast milk and their relationship on the effect of nutrition in preterm infants. Objective: To investigate the macronutrient composition of breast milk in preterm infants (33 weeks). Methods: Analysis of protein, carbohydrates and lipids in breast milk samples from preterm (<33 weeks) collected longitudinally, according study protocol. Results: We present variability in samples collected in three consecutive weeks of postnatal age, giving protein content ranged from 1.34 g / dl (SD +/- 0.11) to 1.05 g / dl (SD +/- 0.10) with (p < 0.05). Carbon hydrates 6.20 g / dl (SD +/- 0.17) to 6.77 g / dl (SD +/- 0.22) with (p <0.05). Fat of 4.10 g / dl (SD +/- 0.39) to 4.33 g / dl (SD +/- 0.26) with (p = 0.075).Discussion: These data provide a more detailed picture of the nutrient intake ofpreterm infants fed breast milk.

ABSTRACT

Aims: A mother’s diet during pregnancy is considered one of the most important external factors affecting health of her child further in life. Unfavourable diet, together with advanced maternal age, high pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), and excessive pregnancy weight gain are considered to be significant risk factors for adverse pregnancy complications and outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine correlations between pre-pregnancy BMI, quality of nutrition during pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with an excessive weight gain during pregnancy. Study Design: Randomized, observational, prospective, long-term study. Methodology: The study included pregnant women from the area of the city Osijek, eastern Croatia. The subjects were monitored throughout pregnancy to labour and 6 weeks postpartum. Analysis included anthropometry, blood glucose, incidence of gestosis (i.e. hypertension, gestational diabetes, edemas and proteinuria) and delivery outcomes (e.g. mode of delivery, birth weight) and a 24-hour dietary record was used to asses nutrition quality. Based on the risk factors for adverse pregnancy complications and outcomes, two groups of women were selected for the sub-group analysis. The first group of women with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI and an excessive pregnancy weight gain (n=47), and the second group of women with an overweight/obese BMI (BMI≥25 kg/m2) and an excessive pregnancy weight gain (n=43). Results: For women with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI, the balance of specific carbohydrates had the greatest importance on pregnancy complications and outcomes. On the other hand, for women starting pregnancy at-risk; with an overweight/obese BMI, the total dietary intake of fats and the balance in specific fatty acids had the greatest impact on pregnancy complications and outcomes. Conclusion: The present study provides important data on how specific dietary components influence pregnancy complications and outcomes. This information may be useful in creating specific timed interventions for women of reproductive age, ensuring a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy child.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermic effects, the macronutrient oxidation rates and the satiety of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). METHODS: The thermic effects of two meals containing MCT or long-chain triglycerides (LCT) were compared in ten healthy men (mean age 24.4 +/- 2.9 years). Energy content of the meal was 30% of resting metabolic rate of each subject. Metabolic rate and macronutrient oxidation rate were measured before the meals and for 6 hours after the meals by indirect calorimetry. Satiety was estimated by using visual analogue scales (VAS) at 8 times (before the meal and for 6 hours after meal). RESULTS: Total thermic effect of MCT meal (42.8 kcal, 8.0% of energy intake) was significantly higher than that (26.8 kcal, 5.1% of energy intake) of the LCT meal. Mean postprandial oxygen consumption was also significantly different between the two types of meals (MCT meal: 0.29 +/- 0.35 L/min, LCT meal: 0.28 +/- 0.27 L/min). There were no significant differences in total postprandial carbohydrate and fat oxidation rates between the two meals. However, from 30 to 120 minutes after consumption of meals, the fat oxidation rate of MCT meal was significantly higher than that of the LCT meal. Comparison of satiety values (hunger, fullness and appetite) between the two meals showed that MCT meal maintained satiety for a longer time than the LCT meal. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed the possibility that long-term substitution of MCT for LCT would produce weight loss if energy intake remained constant.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Breast milk is the best available food for optimum growth and development of infants and the breastfeeding rate is increasing in Korea. The purpose of this study is to measure the concentrations of macronutrients and to evaluate their changes according to lactation period in breast milk from lactating Korean women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Milk samples were obtained from 2,632 healthy lactating women (mean age; 32.0 +/- 3.3 years), where the lactating period was up to a period of 8 months, who also volunteered to participate in the Human Milk Macronutrient Analysis Research. Lactose, protein, fat and water content in the breast milk samples were analyzed with infrared spectrometry using MilkoScan FT-2. RESULTS: The mean macronutrient composition per 100 mL of mature breast milk was 7.1 g for lactose, 1.4 g for protein and 3.0 g for fat, and energy content was 61.1 kcal. The protein concentration was significantly lower in milk samples at 1-2 weeks (2.0 g/dL) to 2-3 months (1.4 g/dL) than those at 0-1 week (2.2 g/dL), but it was similar among samples from 3-4 months to 7-8 months (1.3 g/dL). Mean lipid levels varied among different lactational period groups (2.7-3.2 g/dL), but presented no significant difference. Lactose concentration in the milk samples did not differ with lactation period. Maternal body mass index was positively related to protein and lipid breast milk contents, but was negatively related to lactose content. General linear models examining the associations between maternal variables and milk macronutrient content revealed that lactation period had a major impact on protein and lipid, but not on lactose content in breast milk. CONCLUSIONS: These results warrant future studies to explore factors that may be associated with changes in macronutrient content in human milk.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da deficiência dos macronutrientes no crescimento e estado nutricional de mudas de bananeira tipo Prata. Os tratamentos foram dois genótipos Prata-Anã e seu híbrido PA42-44 cultivados em solução nutritiva na presença e ausência dos macronutrientes. Após 100 dias foram avaliados a área foliar, a massa seca das raízes, rizoma e folhas e, os teores de macronutrientes na massa seca de cada parte da planta. Com esses resultados calcularam-se os índices: eficiência de absorção, de transporte e de utilização dos macronutrientes. As deficiências de N para Prata-Anã e Mg para híbrido PA42-44 foram as que mais limitaram o crescimento dos genótipos. O acúmulo de nutrientes correspondeu à seguinte ordem N > K > Ca > P > Mg > S para Prata-Anã e N > K > Ca > P > S > Mg para o híbrido PA42-44, o que reflete as exigências da planta. O híbrido PA42-44 apresentou maior eficiência de absorção de todos macronutrientes, em solução completa. Os tratamentos não diferiram quanto a eficiência de transporte dos macronutrientes, exceto na omissão de Mg, onde a maior eficiência ocorreu no híbrido PA 42-44. A omissão de P, K, Ca, Mg e S na nutrição dos dois genótipos de banana resulta em maior eficiência de utilização, comparado com as plantas nutridas adequadamente.


This work objective to evaluate the effect of macronutrient deficiencies no growth and nutritional status of banana seedlings type Prata. The treatments were two genotypes Prata-Anã and its hybrid PA42-44 grown in nutrient solution in the presence and absence of macronutrients. Leaf area, dry matter of roots, rhizome and leaves, and the macronutrient dry mass of each plant were evaluated after 100 days. With these results was calculated the indices: absorption, transport and utilization efficiency of macronutrientes. The deficiencies of N for Prata-Anã and Mg for PA42- 44 hybrid were most limited the growth of genotypes. The nutrient accumulation corresponded to the following order N > K > Ca > P > Mg > S for the Prata-Anã and N > K > Ca > P > S > Mg for the PA42-44 hybrid, which reflect the plant requirements. The PA 42-44 hybrid showed higher absorption efficiency of all macronutrients, in complete solution. The treatments no differ regarding to the macronutrients transport efficiency, except the omission of Mg, where higher efficiency occurred in hybrid PA 42-44. The P, K, Ca, Mg and S omission in the nutrition of two banana genotypes results in increased utilization efficiency, compared with plants growing adequately.

PURPOSE: It is reported that most senior people consume a high carbohydrate diet, while a high carbohydrate diet could contribute to the risk of chronic disease. The aim of this study is to determine whether a high carbohydrate diet can increase the risk of chronic disease in elderly Koreans. METHODS: Using the 2007-2009 Korean National Health Nutrition Examination Survey data, out of a total of 3,917 individuals aged 65 and above, final 1,535 subjects were analyzed, divided by dietary carbohydrate energy ratio into two groups of moderate carbohydrate ratio (MCR, 55-70%) and excessive carbohydrate ratio (ECR, > 70%). All data were processed after the application of weighted value, using a general linear model or logistic regression. RESULTS: Eighty one percent of elderly Koreans consumed diets with carbohydrate energy ratio above 70%. The ECR group included more female subjects, rural residents, lower income, and lower education level. The ECR group showed lower waist circumference, lower diastolic blood pressure, and lower frequency of consumption of meat and egg, milk, and alcohol. The intake of energy and most nutrients, with the exception of fiber, potassium, vitamin A, and carotene, was lower in the ECR group compared to the MCR group. When analyzed by gender, the ECR group showed lower risk of dyslipidemia in male and obesity in female subjects, even though the ECR group showed low intake of some nutrients. No difference in the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and anemia was observed between the two groups in male or female subjects. CONCLUSION: This result suggested that a high carbohydrate diet would not be a cause to increase the risk of chronic disease in the elderly. Further study is needed in order to determine an appropriate carbohydrate energy ratio for elderly Koreans to reduce the risk of chronic disease.

ABSTRACT

BRAFO, Benefit-Risk Analysis for Foods, was a European Commission project funded within Framework Six as a Specific Support Action and coordinated by ILSI Europe. BRAFO developed a tiered methodology for assessing the benefits and risks of foods and food components, utilising a quantitative, common scale for health assessment in higher tiers. A methodology group reviewed and assembled the methodologies available developing a guidance document that describes a tiered (‘stepwise’) approach for performing a risk and benefit assessment of foods. In parallel, three expert groups on natural foods, dietary interventions and heat processing applied the tiered approach to several case studies. Finally a consensus group reported on the implications of the experience gained during the development of the project for the further improvement.

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of adiposity is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The two most popular methods to measure adiposity are body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip-ratio (WHR), which measure the overall and abdominal adiposity, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine whether BMI or WHR was more strongly associated with macronutrient intakes and lipid profiles in T2DM patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 210 T2DM patients, mean age of 56.73(SD 10.23) years, were recruited from Penang. Information on socio-demographic, body measurements (height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference)and macronutrient intakes (three 24-hour dietary recalls) were recorded. Routine laboratory tests (fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, LDL, HDL, triglyceride and total cholesterol) were performed according to standard procedure. Results:Among the respondents, 84% had abdominal and 63% had overall adiposity respectively.There was a significant correlation between WHR and the total calorie(r=0.27; p<0.001), carbohydrate (r=0.30; p<0.001) and protein intakes(r=0.18; p=0.009). WHR was significantly associated with serum triglycerides(r=0.18; p=0.011) and the HDL levels (r=-0.20; p=0.003). On the other hand, neither lipid profiles nor dietary intakes showed significant correlation with BMI. Conclusion: In T2DM, WHR is more strongly associated with macronutrient intakes, HDL and triglyceride compared with BMI. Hence, WHR is a better anthropometric indicator of plasma lipids in T2DM.

This study was carried out to compare the macronutrient contents in three types of local sweet kuih; kuih seri muka (SM), kuih bakar (B) dan kuih wajik (W) which recipes were developed using calculation according to the Malaysian Food Composition Table (MFCT) and proximate analysis technique. The contents of the macronutrients were identified using proximate analyses while determination of energy and total carbohydrate were based on calculation. Results from proximate analysis showed that W contained significantly higher (p < 0.05) total carbohydrate content (61.5 ± 1.6%) compared to B (39.3 ± 1.5%) and SM (38.7 ± 1.5%). SM contained significantly higher (p < 0.05) of water (46.7 ± 1.6%) compared to B (42.5 ± 6.6%) and W (30.2 ± 0.4%). The protein content in B was 6.1 ± 0.9% and significantly higher than that in W (3.0 ± 0.3%). There were no significant difference of fat content between B (12.8 ± 1.8%), SM (9.9 ± 0.2%) and W (8.2 ± 2.6%). Total calorie for W was the highest (332 kcal/100g), followed by B (299 kcal/100g) and SM (262 kcal/100g). In general, macronutrients content determined based on proximate analyses were lower compared to the calculation method based on MFCT. Introdução. O consumo de açúcares aumentou consideravelmente nas últimas décadas, bem como a incidência e a prevalência da obesidade, gerando a elaboração de recomendações para moderá-lo. Os açúcares contribuem para a palatabilidade dos alimentos, podendo também aumentar sua densidade energética (DE), outro fator de risco para obesidade. Uma alternativa seria a substituição por adoçantes não calóricos, que também aumentam a palatabilidade dos alimentos, porém são isentos calorias. No entanto, ainda não existe consenso a respeito das implicações desta substituição principalmente na redução da ingestão energética e do peso corporal. Objetivo. Identificar a DE da dieta, a ingestão energética total e de macronutrientes, segundo consumo de adoçantes e/ou alimentos processados com adoçantes por adultos e idosos. Métodos. Estudo transversal, no qual foram coletados dados de sexo; idade; peso e estatura, para cálculo do IMC; consumo de adoçantes, por questionário adaptado e pelo recordatório de 24 horas, foram calculadas as médias de DE, de ingestão energética total e de macronutrientes. Para verificar associação entre variáveis independentes (idade, sexo, IMC, uso de adoçantes não calóricos) com a dependente "classificação da DE foi realizada regressão logística, considerando dietas com alta DE aquelas com 1,5 Kcal/g ou mais. Para comparação das médias de ingestão energética e de macronutrientes, entre usuários de adoçantes e não usuários, foi utilizado o Teste t de Student (p 0,05) pelo Stata 10.0. Resultados. Participaram do estudo 168 indivíduos, com idade média de 54,8 anos (DP = 14,9 anos), sendo 84,5 por cento do sexo feminino, 67,9 por cento com sobrepeso ou obesidade e 44,1 por cento usuários de adoçantes. A média da DE das dietas de usuários de adoçantes foi 1,15 Kcal/g (IC 95 por cento [1,11; 1,19]), e de não usuários 1,28 Kcal/g (IC 95 por cento [1,23; 1,33])...


The consumption of sugar has increased considerably in recent decades, as well as the incidence and prevalence of obesity, leading the development of recommendations to moderate this consumption. Sugars contribute to the palatability of food, but may also increase their energy density (ED), which is an important obesitys risk factor. An alternative would be replacing sugar by non-caloric sweeteners, which increase the palatability of foods, but with free calories. However, the implications of this substitution in reducing energy intake and body weight are controversial. Objective. Identify the ED of diets, the total energy intake and macronutrient consumption according to the consumption of sweeteners and/or processed foods with sweeteners by adults and elderly. Methods. A cross sectional study, that collected data on gender, age, weight and height, to calculate BMI, consumption of non-caloric sweeteners, by questionnaire and with data from 24-hour recall, were calculated the average of ED, total energy intake and total macronutrient intake. Logistic regression was performed to assess the association between independent variables (age, gender, BMI, use of non-caloric sweeteners) and the dependent classification of ED, considering diets with high ED those with 1.5 kcal/g or more. To compare the means of total energy intake and total macronutrient intake, among noncaloric sweeteners users and nonusers, was used the Students t test (p 0.05) by Stata 10.0. Results. Were collected data form 168 individuals, with an average age of 54.8 years (SD = 14.9 years), 84.5 per cent female, 67.9 per cent overweight or obese and 44.1 per cent users of sweeteners. The mean of ED diets of non-caloric sweeteners users was 1.15 kcal/g (CI 95 per cent [1.11; 1.19]), and 1.28 Kcal/g (CI 95 per cent [1.23; 1.33]) for non-users. ABSTRACT

Um considerável número de espécies arbóreas constitui a flora brasileira, em alguns casos, seus frutos e sementes revelam-se boas fontes de nutrientes. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a composição química e de nutrientes em sementes de Pente de Macaco, Flor de Paca, Itaúba, Jatobá e Murici Manso. O delineamento experimental foi casualizado com cinco tratamentos. As análises realizadas foram: grau de umidade (105 ºC ± 3 ºC por 24 h), teor de amido (mg.g-¹), carboidratos (mg.g-¹), e proteínas (albumina, globulina, prolamina, glutelina) (mg.g-¹), e nutrientes (N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S). Os resultados demonstraram que as sementes de Flor de Paca possuem os maiores teores de amido e proteínas, de Jatobá constituem uma fonte significativa de carboidratos e os maiores índices de fósforo, cálcio e enxofre. Para os teores de nitrogênio a Itaúba apresentou os maiores teores e também obteve resultados satisfatórios para cálcio e a espécie Murici Manso apresentou os maiores teores de potássio e magnésio.


A considerable number of tree species is the flora in some cases, their fruits and seeds turn out to be good sources of nutrientes. The study aimed to verify the chemical composition of nutrientes in seeds of forest species Pente de Macaco, Flor de Paca, Itaúba, Jatobá and Murici Manso. of forest species of Monkey Comb, Flor de Paca, Itaúba, Jatoba and Murici Manso. The experimental design was randomized with five treatments. Analyses were carried out: moisture content, starch content (mg.g ¹), carbohydrates (mg.g ¹), and proteins (albumin, globulin, prolamin, glutelin) (mg.g ¹) and nutrients (N, P, K , Ca, Mg and S). The results showed that the seeds of Flor de Paca had the highest content of starch and protein of Jatobá is a significant source of carbohydrates and the highest levels of phosphorus, calcium and sulfur. For contents of nitrogen Itaúba showed the highest levels and also obtained satisfactory results for calcium and species Murici Manso had the highest levels of potassium and magnesium.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the macronutrient composition of breast milk from Korean women on the growth of infants. METHODS: 173 healthy lactating women and breast-fed infants who visited Gangnam Severance Hospital and two breast-feeding centers in Seoul from October 2011 to March 2012 were recruited. We checked the birth weight and body weight of infants while collecting breast milk from the mothers, and analyzed the macronutrient component of breast milk with a mid-infrared milk analyzer (MIRIS(R) Human Milk Analyzer, HMA, Miris AB, Uppsala, Sweden). Group analysis was performed depending on more or less than 5 percentile and 25 percentile of body weight. RESULTS: The amount of daily intake/RDA for calories, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates of breast milk were significantly lower in the less than 5 percentile and 25 percentile group (P<0.05). Using multiple logistic regression analysis, the significant nutrient component that was insufficient in the less than 5 percentile and less than 25 percentile of body weight group respectively was carbohydrates (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: We conclude that each macronutrient level of breast milk is statistically low in infants with less body weight. These results suggest that nutritional consideration of breast milk is necessary for the growth of breast-fed infants.

BACKGROUND: Major macronutrients for energy intake vary among countries and cultures. Carbohydrates, including rice, are the major component of daily energy intake in Korea. The aim of this study was to examine the association of daily energy intake or each proportion of macronutrients, especially carbohydrates, with glycemic control in diabetic Koreans. METHODS: A total of 334 individuals with diabetes (175 men, age 57.4+/-0.8 years; 159 women, age 60.9+/-0.9 years) who participated in the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were examined. Glycemic control was categorized based on concentration of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; HbA1c or =8.1%). Dietary intake was assessed by using a 24-recall item questionnaire. RESULTS: High total energy intake was associated with poor glycemic control (HbA1c or =8.1%, 2,144+/-73 kcal; P value for trend=0.002). Each proportion of protein, fat, or carbohydrate was not associated with glycemic control. Even after adjusting for several parameters, the association of daily energy intake with glycemic control still persisted. CONCLUSION: Total energy intake may be more closely related to glycemic control than each proportionof macronutrients in Korean diabetics.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gender on the thermic effect of food and substrate oxidation rate during 5 hours after a mixed meal. Twenty healthy college students (10 males and 10 females) aged 20-26 years participated in this study. The energy contents of the experimental diets were 775 kcal and 627 kcal for males and females respectively, which were 30% of individual energy requirements and were composed of 65/15/20% as the proportion of carbohydrate/protein/fat. Resting and postprandial energy expenditure and substrate oxidation rates were measured with indirect calorimetry in the fasting state and every 30 min for 5 hours after meal consumption. Thermic effects of food expressed as DeltaAUC and TEF% were not significantly different between males and females. However, TEF% adjusted for body weight and fat-free mass in males (0.095% and 0.120%) were significantly lower than those in females (0.152% and 0.213%)(p < 0.05). The total amount of carbohydrate oxidized was significantly lower in males than that in females (58.6 vs. 86.6 mg/kcal energy intake/5 h, p < 0.05). In contrast, the total amount of fat oxidized was significantly higher in males than that in females after the meal (32.9 vs. 17.2 mg/kcal energy intake/5 h, p < 0.01). These results indicate that gender affects the thermic effects of food and the substrate oxidation rate after a meal. The results show that males use relatively less carbohydrate and more fat as an energy source after a meal than that of females.

ABSTRACT

There are a few studies that reported the association of sleep duration with calorie intake and energy expenditure. Using cross-sectional data from a population-based prospective study, we evaluated the association of sleep duration with indicators of obesity including body mass index and waist circumference, calorie intake and its proportion of macronutrients, and physical activity. The study subjects were 4,226 male and female adults, who were aged 40 to 69 years and were free of diagnosed cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia at baseline. Robust regression analysis was used to analyze associations. The study found that sleep duration is inversely associated with waist circumference, calorie intake, and percent of calories from fat intake and is positively associated with percent of calories from carbohydrate intake and physical activity. The inverse association between sleep duration and waist circumference was stronger among men than among women. The inverse association between sleep duration and calorie intake was stronger among women than among men and such association was also stronger among obese persons than those with a normal body mass index. The positive association between sleep duration and physical activity was strongly demonstrated regardless of sex or obesity. Physical activity is positively associated with sleep duration independent of potential confounding factors including age, sex, income, occupation, marital status, education, smoking status, waist circumference, calorie and macronutrient intake, and alcohol intake.
