ABSTRACT

Resumen El crecimiento del maxilar se manifiesta de manera diferente respecto a la mandíbula, la cual se caracteriza por un desarrollo sagital más tardío. El objetivo de esta investigación fue asociar el crecimiento sagital del maxilar superior e inferior con el índice de maduración cervical en radiografías cefálicas laterales de pacientes entre 8 a 20 años de la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador. Se realizó una investigación con enfoque cuantitativo de tipo descriptivo, correlacional y de corte transversal retrospectivo, con una base de datos de 10.586 radiografías cefálicas laterales. Se observó que el pico de crecimiento inicia alrededor de los 9 años en las mujeres y en los hombres a los 11 años, y este culmina a los 13 años en el sexo femenino y entre los 14 y 17 años en el sexo masculino. Además, se determinó una correlación baja ente el crecimiento sagital del maxilar superior y los estadios de maduración vertebral (r=0,338) así como con el maxilar inferior (r= 0,357). Finalmente, se concluyó que el crecimiento del maxilar superior se produce en los primeros estadios de maduración cervical, mientras que en el maxilar inferior el crecimiento longitudinal se produce a partir del estadio III de maduración cervical.


Abstract The growth of the maxilla manifests itself differently from the mandible, which is characterized by a later sagittal development. The objective of the research was to associate the sagittal growth of the upper and lower jaw and the cervical maturation index in lateral cephalic radiographs of patients between 8 and 20 years of age from the city of Cuenca. A descriptive, correlational and retrospective cross-sectional quantitative approach was conducted with a database of 10,586 lateral cephalic radiographs. It was observed that the peak of growth begins around 9 years of age in women and at 11 years in men, and culminates at age 13 in females, and between 14 and 17 years in males. In addition, a low correlation was determined between the sagittal growth of the upper jaw and the stages of vertebral maturation (r = 0.338) as well as with the lower jaw (r = 0.357). Finally, it was concluded that the growth of the upper jaw occurs in the first stages of cervical maturation, while in the lower jaw, longitudinal growth occurs from stage III of cervical maturation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Ossifying fibroma is a disfiguring benign neoplasia of the jaw that affects young animals of several species, including horses. The present report described the postoperative care and long-term follow-up after a rostral mandibulectomy (RM) that was performed to treat an ossifying fibroma in a horse. A 3-year-old crossbred horse presented a hard, well-defined, 14.5×10.0×9.5cm ulcerated mass attached to the rostral mandible. Radiographic findings were compatible with a nonaggressive mandibular bone deformity (benign neoplasia). Histological features confirmed the diagnosis of the ossifying fibroma. After the RM, the horse slowly adapted to the new feeding conditions and was discharged when it fully recovered and was capable of feeding on the paddock and drinking water on its own on day 60. This slow adaptation was crucial for post-surgical recovery and required hard labor to manage the feeding and hydration by nasogastric tube during the hospital stay.


RESUMO: Fibroma ossificante é uma neoplasia benigna desfigurante da mandíbula, que afeta animais jovens de várias espécies, incluindo equinos. O presente relato descreve os cuidados pós-operatórios e o acompanhamento a longo prazo após mandibulectomia rostral (MR) no tratamento de um fibroma ossificante em um equino. Um cavalo mestiço de três anos de idade apresentou massa ulcerada, dura, bem definida, medindo 14,5x10x9,5cm, contígua à mandíbula rostral. Os achados radiográficos foram compatíveis com uma deformidade óssea mandibular não agressiva (neoplasia benigna). As características histológicas confirmaram o diagnóstico de fibroma ossificante. Após a MR, o equino adaptou-se lentamente às novas condições de alimentação e recebeu alta clínica totalmente recuperado, sendo capaz de se alimentar em piquetes e beber água por conta própria, no 60o dia. Esta lenta adaptação foi crucial para recuperação pós-cirúrgica e exigiu trabalho árduo no manejo da alimentação e hidratação por meio de sonda nasogástrica durante o período de internação hospitalar.

ABSTRACT

To tackle a large midline diastema and generalized spacing existing before extraction often poses a challenge to the treating prosthodontist. The situation becomes even more complicated if the patient is a teenager, with multiple missing teeth, associated deep bite and where the jaw bone growth has not yet been completed. Possible treatment options would include a removable prosthesis, a fixed partial denture or an implant supported prosthesis. Treating such cases with a simple removable prosthesis cannot be justified if a deep bite existed which would result in posterior disocclusion. Also a conventional fixed partial denture or closure of the diastema with light cure composite (LCC), would result in a seemingly large tooth, which would be unaesthetic in appearance. Implant supported prosthesis is a possibility, if the patient’s jaw bone growth has been completed. Another simple non-invasive solution to this problem would be to fabricate a non-rigid connector using loops. This presentation describes the procedure for fabrication of an interim loop connector for a 16 year old female patient who had lost one of her maxillary central incisors as a result of trauma. Patient also had multiple spacing in the maxillary anterior teeth and an associated deep bite. Her cephalogram revealed that she had a Class III skeletal pattern. A permanent treatment at this stage was not possible due to ontoward mandibular growth pattern as revealed on the cephalogram. Hence to dodge all these problems, a simple and non-invasive treatment using loop connectors was chosen till the growth period was completed.

En la población joven venezolana las maloclusiones representan un importante problema de salud bucal. Resulta útil la aplicación de métodos diagnósticos cefalométricos como el propuesto por Petrovic que permitan identificar el potencial de crecimiento mandibular del paciente como un instrumento para seleccionar la modalidad de tratamiento. El propósito de esta investigación fue identificar los grupos rotacionales y las categorías auxológicas en pacientes venezolanos, de ambos géneros, entre 7 y 10 años, que acudieron a la Facultad de Odontología de la UCV, durante el periodo 2006-2010. Se aplicó el método cefalométrico de Petrovic para la identificación del tipo rotacional y categoría auxológica en las radiografías cefálicas laterales de pacientes sin tratamiento ortopédico ni ortodóncico previo. El tipo rotacional más frecuente fue el P1N, seguido por R2D, R1N y P2D; en ambos géneros el tipo rotacional P1N fue el más frecuente, sin embargo en el género femenino, también se observaron los tipos P2D, R2D y R1N. El grupo rotacional más frecuente fue P1NOB y en segundo lugar R1NOB. Los grupos rotacionales P1NOB y R1NOB fueron los más frecuentes en las niñas y P1NOB en los niños. In the young venezuelan population, malocclusions are an important oral health problem. It is useful the application of cephalometric diagnostic methods as the proposed by Petrovic that allows to identify the mandibular growth potential of the patient as a tool to select the appropriate treatment modality. The aim of this study was to identify the rotational auxologic groups and categories in Venezuelan patients for both genders, age between 7 and 10 years, who had been attended in the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Central of Venezuela, during the period 2006-2010. Was applied Petrovic cephalometric method for identifying the rotational type and auxologic category in the cephalic lateral radiographs of patients without previous orthodontic or orthopedic treatment. The most frequent rotational type was P1N, followed by R2D, R1N and P2D; in both genders P1N rotational type was the most common, however in the female gender, P2D, and R2D and R1N types were also observed. The most frequent rotational group was P1NOB and secondly R1NOB. R1NOB and P1NOB were rotational groups most frequent in girls and in boys was P1NOB. ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: avaliar o grau de correlação existente entre o crescimento mandibular e a maturação esquelética em jovens brasileiras melanodermas. MÉTODOS: examinou-se 140 telerradiografias, obtidas em norma lateral e 140 radiografias de mão e punho de jovens do gênero feminino, brasileiras, melanodermas, com 8 a 14 anos de idade, com oclusão normal ou má oclusão de Classe I, de Angle, não submetidas a tratamento ortodôntico prévio. Nas radiografias da mão e do punho, avaliou-se o desenvolvimento dos centros de ossificação da falange proximal do 3º dedo e da epífise distal do osso rádio, apoiando-se no método descrito por Eklõf e Ringertz; e nas telerradiografias, obtidas em norma lateral, analisou-se a pneumatização do seio frontal, de acordo com o método descrito por Rüf e Pancherz, e as medidas cefalométricas representativas do crescimento mandibular (Co-Go, Co-Gn, Go-Gn e Fg-Pg). Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise estatística, utilizando-se a Correlação de Pearson, para determinar o grau de relacionamento entre as variáveis. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: ocorreu uma correlação altamente significativa entre os centros de ossificação observados na radiografia de mão e punho e as medidas cefalométricas representativas do crescimento mandibular (r = 0,777). Apesar de estatisticamente significativa, ocorreu uma baixa correlação entre a pneumatização do seio frontal e os eventos da maturidade esquelética (r = 0,306), assim como a relação entre a pneumatização do seio frontal e as medidas cefalométricas representativas do crescimento mandibular (r = 0,218).


OBJECTIVE: To assess the degree of correlation between mandibular growth and skeletal maturation in young melanodermic Brazilian women. METHODS: The authors examined 140 lateral teleradiographies and an additional 140 radiographies of hands and wrists of young female Brazilian melanodermic subjects aged 8 to 14 years with normal occlusion or Angle Class I malocclusion, who had not been subjected to previous orthodontic treatment. Using the hand and wrist radiographies, the authors evaluated the development of ossification centers in the proximal phalanx of the 3rd finger and the distal epiphysis of the radius bone, drawing on the method described by Eklõf and Ringertz. The lateral teleradiographies enabled an analysis of frontal sinus pneumatization according to the method described by Ruf and Pancherz, and of the cephalometric measurements representative of mandibular growth, namely, Co-Go, Co-Gn, Go-Gn, Fg-Pg. The data were statistically analyzed using Pearson's Correlation to determine the degree of relationship between variables. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A highly significant correlation was found between ossification centers observed on the hand and wrist radiographies and cephalometric measurements representative of the mandibular growth (r = 0.777). Although statistically significant, there was a low correlation between frontal sinus pneumatization and the progression of skeletal maturity (r = 0.306), as well as a relationship between frontal sinus pneumatization and the cephalometric measurements representative of mandibular growth (r = 0.218).

ABSTRACT

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo realizar uma avaliação comparativa entre os resultados das medidas obtidas segundo dois traçados (Altonen, Haavikko e Mattila × Puricelli), efetuados sobre radiografias panorâmicas em dois momentos de formação radicular, verificando-se a presença ou ausência de compatibilidade entre os mesmos quanto ao grau de inclinação dos terceiros molares inferiores em relação aos segundos molares. Desta forma, as seguintes medidas foram comparadas: ângulo Beta de Altonen, Haavikko e Mattila correspondente ao gama de Puricelli, o qual indicou o relacionamento dos terceiros molares inferiores em relação aos segundos molares. Baseando-se nos resultados obtidos, apresentados e discutidos no presente trabalho e de acordo com a metodologia estudada, pode-se concluir que os traçados diferem entre si. Entretanto, apresentam uma correlação positiva.


The aim of the present investigation was to compare the measurements obtained based on two tracings (Altonen, Haavikko and Mattila versus Puricelli) conducted on panoramic radiographs at two moments of root formation, as to their compatibility with the degree of inclination the lower third molars in relation to the second molars. Thus, the following measurements were compared: the beta angle of Altonen, Haavikko and Mattila with the corresponding gamma angle of Puricelli, parameters that indicate the relationship of the lower third molars to the second molars. Based on the results presented and discussed in the present study, and based on the method employed, it is concluded that tracings differ but also show a positive correlation.

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the possibility of using a cervical vertebral maturation indicator as a mandibular growth indicator, the relationship of cervical vertebral maturation and mandibular & body height growth changes was assessed in biennial serial lateral cephalometric raadiographs of eighteen korean male and fourteen korean female while they were 8.5 to 185 years old. The following results were obtained. 1. It was a reliable method to evaluate skeletal maturation by using cervical vertebrae. 2. In general, cervical vertebral maturation stages of females were higher than those of males at the same age and there were significant differences in statistics at the age of 105, 14.5. 3. The age of a female at the same cervical vertebral maturation stage were earlier than that of a male. 4. In the case of males, significant Ar-Gn increases were found between stage 3 and 4,5 Ar-Go increases between stage 4 and 5. 5. In the case of females, significant S-Gn and Ar-Gn increases were found between stage 3 and 4. 6. Significant body height increases were found between stage 3 and 4 in both sexes. 7. The peak velocity of body height and mandibular length was observed between cervical vertebral maturation stage 3 and 4 in botli series. 8. The relationship between- inandibular & body height changes and specific maturation stage of cervical vertebra was found, therfore using a cervical vertebral maturation indicator as mandibular growth indicator is quite within realms of possibility.

ABSTRACT

This author tried to find if the size of the frontal sinus can be used as a diagnostic aid to predict the mandibular growth pattern in growing patients-in lateral cephalogram utilizing the fact the the frontal sinus completes its growth in earlier stage but the mandible continues to grow until later. At this study, the 228 samples were divided into 3 groups as skeletal Class I , II, III malocclusions and three indicies(ANB, APDI, Wits) were measured which hidicate the mandibular body length and the antero-posterior relationship of maxilla and mandible to evaluate their relations with frontal sinus. And results were obtained as followings. 1. The size of frontal sinus is highly related to ANB, APDI, Wits and mandilar body length(p<0.001) 2. the size of the frontal sinus of the Cl III malocclusion group was on the lateral cephalogram larger than Cl I and C1 II group.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the partial glossectomy on the mandibular growth of growing rats. Thirty one Sprague-Dawley rats four weeks old were divided into two groups : the first group served as the control and the second group was partially excised in the tongue of the rats. The experimental animals were sacrificed at 4 and 8 weeks after partial glossectomy. The changes of the rat mandibular growth following partial glossectomy were observed biometrically from dry bone specimens. The findings were as follows: 1. Partial glossectomy of growing rat produced inhibitory effects on the growth of the mandible and did not change the original shape of the mandible. 2. Among the factors affecting mandibular growth, the presence of the proper tongue size was essential. 3. Partial glossectomy of the growing rats could not change general growth of the rats whole bodies.
