ABSTRACT

Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy comprising of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are a major cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Neurological manifestations of pregnancy induced hypertension are the most common cause of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. Cranial neuro-imaging reveals focal regions of symmetric hemispheric oedema; with parietal and occipital regions getting most commonly affected.Methods: The study was conducted among 65 antenatal women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia at gestational age >20 weeks in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Kamla Nehru State Hospital for Mother and Child IGMC Shimla. Clinical signs and symptoms, neuroimaging findings were recorded for study purpose.Results: About 17.6% of severe pre-eclampsia and 100% of eclampsia had findings observed on cranial MRI. Headache and visual complaints were most frequently recorded. PRES was the predominant neuroradiographic finding in present study and occipital lobe was commonly affected region. No significant difference was observed regarding blood pressure parameters between MRI positive and negative subjects.Conclusions: Neuroimaging in antenatal with severe hypertensive disorders might aid in better understanding of the poorly explained phenomenon. In addition, this would be helpful in better management of the disorders along with their much-dreaded complications. Patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy should be subjected routinely to cranial imaging for the better perinatal outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Betel quid dependence(BQD)is a chronic recurrent brain disease characterized by loss of self-control and compulsive repeated use of drugs,which conforms to the characterics of addictive behavior classified by the World Health Organization. Long term chewing Betel nut can increase the risk of a variety of cancers such as oral cancer. The BQD research lacks the ideal animal model whereas the mechanism of BQD is still not clear,and there is no effective treatment and prevention. Notably,neuroimaging technology has provided a non-invasive,quantitative assessment method for the neural mechanism of BQD. The author sum-marized the neural mechanism and imaging studies progress of BQD,and these findings provided preliminary objective evidence for the brain changes of BQD,which was helpful for the deep understanding of the neuro-pathic mechanism of BQD,and provided theoretical basis for the early intervention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

We don’t have today drugs specifically registered for amygdala dysfunctions as preventable agents towards some kind of crime behavior. This Neuro psychiatric condition or organ state are to be considered and treated in preventive way as common disease. There is an amygdala physio-pathological Level of activation.  Still we are not sure to call this dysfunctions status as disease and drugs are needed or efficacy to control it. A neuro-pharmacology research of amygdala can give the response also using imaging Techniques. Studies demonstrated that Amygdala activation is involved in aggressive behavior. The aim of this work is to investigate in this relationship and to find if there is a level of activation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was conducted in a tertiary care paediatric hospital to ascertain the spectrum of clinical and radiological features of Neuronal Migrational Disorders in children. The role of inheritance in Neuronal Migrational Disorders is under intense investigation. Studies on Neuronal Migrational Disorders (NMDs) in children from developing countries are lacking. Method: Retrospective analysis of records of diagnosed cases by neuroimaging as Neuronal Migrational Disorders in the Department of Paediatrics. Results: Eighteen Children (2days to 8years age) with different types of neuronal migrational disorder based on neuro-imaging were included. Observed anomalies included Lissencephaly (33.3%), Pachygyria (16.6%), Polymicrogyria (5.5%), Heterotopia (11.1%), Schizencephaly (22.2%) and Hemimegalencephaly (5.5%). Focal Seizure in 5 (27.7%) cases, Generalised Tonic Clonic Seizures in 3 (16.6%) and Myoclonic Seizure in 2 (11.1%) cases were the types of seizure present in 10 (55.5%) patients. Five patients presented with Quadriparesis, two with Hemiplegia and one with Congenital Talipes Equinovarus. All the eighteen patients had some degree of Cognitive Developmental Delay. Conclusion: Lissencephaly is the most common type of Neuronal Migrational Disorder followed by Schizencepahly. Focal Seizure and Quadriparesis were the common manifestations. Family history of similar cases with parental consanguinity in Schizencephaly cases gives a clue to the autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Family history of similar cases of Schizencephaly without any history of consanguinity indicates an autosomal pattern of inheritance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore neural correlates for the recognition of facial expression videos using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging.Methods:Thirteen right-handed healthy Chinese women underwent blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI voluntarily while recognizing happy, sad, neutral emotional faces and fixation cross videos.Results:In comparison with fixation cross, recognition of neutral faces activated the left middle frontal gyrus, the bilateral precentral gyrus, the right amygdala, the left parahippocampal gyrus, the right postcentral gyrus and the left thalamus. In comparison of neutral faces recognition, the recognition of happy faces elicited increased activation in the right medial frontal gyrus, the right superior frontal gyrus, the middle frontal gyrus, the right anterior cingulated gyrus, the left subcallosal gyrus, the right superior occipital gyrus, the left middle occipital gyrus and the right superior temporal gyrus; while the recognition of sad faces activated the left medial frontal gyrus, the right middle frontal gyrus, the left inferior temporal gyrus and the left superior temporal gyrus.Conclusion:This study indicates that the recognition of facial expression is mediated by a distributed cortical network, and the medial frontal gyrus may be involved in discriminating different affective information, while the superior temporal gyrus may play an important role in processing the dynamic characters of face.
