ABSTRACT

@#AIM:To analyze satisfaction on night vision and its related factors after FS-LASIK in patients with high and low-to-moderate myopia.<p>METHODS:This was a retrospective study. Totally 75 patients(150 eyes)who underwent FS-LASIK in Xi'an No.1 Hospital from June 2018 to September 2019 were included. All subjects were divided into two groups based on spherical equivalent(SE): high myopia group(SE≥-6.00D)and low-to-moderate myopia group(<-6.00D). Six months after surgery, corneal topography and corneal higher-order aberrations(total HOAs, spherical aberrations, coma and trefoil)under 7mm pupil diameter was investigated by Sirius. Patients were required to complete a questionnaire to evaluate satisfaction and night vision symptoms.<p>RESULTS:For the high myopia group and low-to-moderate myopia group, preoperative SE was -7.85±1.27D and -4.57±1.01D respectively. There were significant differences in total HOAs, spherical aberrations and coma(all <i>P</i><0.001)except for the trefoil(<i>P</i>>0.05)between the two groups. Overall satisfaction was 95.3% and 100.0% in high and low-to-moderate myopia group. 18.8% and 9.3% experienced worsen night vision, 51.2% and 40.6% experienced halo, 41.9% and 43.8% experienced starburst, and 18.6% and 15.6% experienced double vision, respectively. Except that there was significant differences in night vision between the two groups(<i>P</i>=0.010), the occurrence of other night vision symptoms were similar and there were no significant differences in any of them(all <i>P</i>>0.05). For all patients, the satisfaction was correlated with preoperative astigmatism and ablation zone(all<i> P</i><0.05), night vision was correlated with preoperative SE, ablation depth, corneal curvature, total HOAs, spherical aberrations and coma postoperatively(all<i> P</i><0.05), star burst was correlated with preoperative total HOAs, coma and postoperative trefoil(all<i> P</i><0.05), double vision was correlated with preoperative astigmatism(<i>P</i><0.05).<p>CONCLUSION: High myopic patient experienced worsen night vision mainly because of increased total HOAs, spherical aberration and coma. However, symptoms such as halo, starburst and double vision were similar in both groups and did not affect overall satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, corneal refractive surgery continues to develop with becoming to be one of the most prevalent utilizations of correction of many patients and brings about better visual quality for ametropic patients.Meanwhile, some patients are subjected to optical complications, and poor night vision is one of the most serious problems which are complained by sufferers after refractive surgery, such as glare, halo and reduce of contrast sensitivity, and the affective factors include age, pupil diameter, high order aberation,scattering,pre-estimated diopter, corneal healing, individual sensitivity to surgery, which are supposed to attract the attention of the majority of clinicians and researchers,at the same time.Ophthalmic clinical doctors and researchers only fully understand the mechanism of the above factors and explore the corresponding measures in order to purposefully treat these complications. In addition, ophthalmologists should be aware of the interaction of these factors and their relationship with individual sensitivity and explore the impact of postoperative visual impairment and the way to avoid them in clinical practice inorder to improve the visual quality by controlling the postoperative optical complications.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare pupil size measured by Colvard(R)pupillometer, ORBScan II(R), Sirius(R) and analyze correlation between pupil size and night vision disturbance after refractive surgery according to measuring methods. METHODS: Two hundred eyes of one hundred patients who underwent refractive surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Pupil size was measured with Colvard(R)pupillometer, Sirius(R) in the scotopic light condition and with ORBScan II(R), Sirius(R) in the photopic light condition. Patients filled out questionnaire about night vision disturbance at postoperative three months. Correlation between pupil size according to measuring methods and night vision disturbance was evaluated. RESULTS: The mean age of patient was 26 years and number of male patients was 36. In scotopic light condition, pupil size measured with Colvard(R)pupillometer (6.76 mm) was significantly larger than that of Sirius(R) (6.53 mm) (p < 0.001). In photopic light condition, pupil size measured with ORBScan II(R) (3.98 mm) was significantly smaller than that of Sirius(R) (4.41 mm) (p < 0.001). Night vision disturbance were correlated with pupil size and Sirius(R) in the scotopic light condition had strongest correlation among three measuring method (r = 0.44). CONCLUSIONS: Sirius(R) tends to measure pupil size smaller than Colvard(R)pupillometer in the scotopic light condition. The correlation between night vision disturbance and pupil size was highest in Sirius(R).
