ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effects of perioperative nutrition management by a multidisciplinary team on nutrition and postoperative complications of patients with esophageal cancer. A total of 239 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy and gastric conduit reconstruction for esophageal or esophagogastric junction cancer between February 2019 and February 2020 were included in the study. They were divided into the experimental group (120 patients) and the control group (119 patients) using the random number table method. Control group patients received routine diet management and experimental group patients received perioperative nutrition management by a multidisciplinary team. The differences of nutriture and postoperative complications between the two groups were compared. At 3 and 7 days after surgery, the experimental group patients had higher total protein and albumin levels (P<0.05), shorter postoperative anal exhaust time (P<0.05), lower incidence of postoperative gastrointestinal adverse reactions, pneumonia, anastomotic fistula, hypoproteinemia (P<0.05), and lower hospitalization costs (P<0.05) than the control group. Nutrition management by a multidisciplinary team effectively improved the nutriture of patients, promoted the rapid recovery of postoperative gastrointestinal function, reduced postoperative complications, and reduced hospitalization costs.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the iodine nutritional status of children aged 8 to 10 in both costal and non-costal areas of Rizhao city Shandong province, and provide a basis for scientific supplementation of iodine. Methods In 2009 and 2010,townships of Lanshan and Donggang were chosen as survey points which situated close to the coast, the counties of Wulian and Juxian that were more than 50 kilometers away from the coast were selected as controls. The iodine concentration of drinking water in every village and water supply point was determined. At the county level,5 to 9 towns were selected according to their sub-area positions of east, west, south, north and center,4 villages were selected in each chosen township,8 - 15 households were selected in each chosen village, edible salt from the households was collected; 5 primary schools were selected in each chosen township,60 students aged 8 - 10 were selected to take thyroid examination in each chosen school.Twenty copies of urine samples were collected from the 60 students to detect the iodine concentration.Iodine in drinking water was tested by cerous sulfate catalytic spectrophotometry,in iodized salt by direct titration,in urine by arsenic-cerium contact method, and thyroids were examined by palpation. Results Totally 3483 copies of drinking water samples,1164 copies of edible salt samples, and 476 copies of urine samples were tested, and a total of 1200 children aged 8 to 10 were investigated; and the ratio of water iodine frequency distribution ≤ 10 μg/L (in costal and non-costal area) accounted for 90.03% ( 1011/1123 ) and 91.10% (2150/2360),respectively,the medians of water iodine were 5.6 and 4.2 μg/L,respectively; the iodine medians of edible salt were 29.03 and 29.99 mg/kg,respectively; the consumption rates of qualified iodized salt were 96.77% (569/588) and 97.05% (559/576),respectively; total goiter rates were 1.17%(7/600) and 1.33%(8/600),respectively; the medians of urinary iodine were 144.05 and 159.15 μg/L,respectively; the percentages of urinary iodine that bellow 100 μg/L were 26.58% (63/237) and 22.59% (54/239),respectively; between 100 - 300 μg/L were 66.75% (158/237) and 64.02% (153/239),respectively;above 300μg/L were 6.75% (16/237)and13.39% (32/239),respectively.ConclusionsThe costal of Rizhao is an iodine deficient area. The current popularity of household's consumption of qualified iodized salt is suitable. The levels of iodine nutrition of children aged 8 to 10 is appropriate, which met the national standard of elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).There is no iodine excess. There are no significant differences in levels of iodine nutrition between costal and non-costal areas on the premise that the same iodized salt is supplied in both the areas, and there is no need to make differentiated supply of iodized salt.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to understand recognition and behaviors related to sodium intake of Korean adults. The data were collected from subjects including 267 male and 285 female adults in nationwide and compared by gender and by age. We found that the male group showed significantly higher smoking, alcohol drinking, and exercise does the female group. The older group (40 to 59 years) revealed significantly higher exercise and lower alcohol drinking; however general disease and hypertension prevalence, diet therapy practice, and meditation for hypertension were higher. Recognizing sodium levels of foods containing high-sodium, and sodium-nutriture labels when purchasing foods, and knowing differences between salt and sodium of the male group or recognizing sodium levels of foods containing high-sodium of the older group was worse than the other. Among the 32 food behaviors, only 12 were identified as significantly correlated to sodium intake levels including behaviors of preferring Chinese and Japanese foods to Western foods, preferring kimchi to raw vegetables, completely consuming soup, stew, noodle liquid, liking of dried fish and salted mackerel, frequent eat-outs or delivered foods, and so forth. There were significant differences between gender or age groups in terms of sodium intake-increasing behaviors; the male group showed higher behaviors of preferring salty taste and eating all broths. And the older group revealed higher behavior of adding table salt as well as the previous two, however, the younger group showed more behaviors of eat-outs or delivered foods and not the liquid of kimchi.

ABSTRACT

This study was intended to examine the zinc status and effect of zinc supplementation on the zinc nutritional status of the elderly living in the Ulsan area. The zinc intake of 207 subjects(male 97, female 110) was measured by a 24-hour dietary recall and food frequency method. Biochemical analysis were conducted from blood and urine samples to evaluate the changes of zinc nutriture with zinc supplementation. The average dietary zinc intake of subjects was 7.7+/-2.8 mg for male and 7.5+/-2.6 mg for female, which were 51.3% and 62.3% of Korean RDA respectively. The first source of zinc was cereal and grain(36%), and the second was eggs and milk group(27%). After 8 weeks of zinc supplementation, the serum zinc content was significantly increased(p<0.01), although the serum copper content was not significantly decrease. Serum HDL-cholesterol level was not significantly decreased with zinc supplementation. Serum alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and urinary zinc excretion were significantly increased(p<0.05). The urinary Zn/Cr was not significantly increased. It is suggested from the results that the daily zinc supplementation can be effective to improve zinc nutriture.

ABSTRACT

Zinc metabolism was determined with 88Zn and 70Zn, stable isotopes of zinc, in two volunteers who went through different levels of zinc nutriture for 15 weeks. It was shown that zinc metabolic pool size could correctly reflect zinc nutriture. The difference between fasting and postprandial plasma zinc concentration was more reliable than fasting plasma zinc concentration alone. The sense of daily urinary and fecal zinc excretion were rather limi ted. In a certain sense, fecal endogenous zinc excretion was valuable for establishing recommendation dietary allowance of zinc.
