ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Previous studies related with occlusal contact area were limited that interocclusal thickness level or the method of measurement has not been accurate in measuring. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between head posture and occlusal contact area using photo occlusion analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 54 subjects with complete dentition (44 men, 10 women / 23 to 33 years of age) were included. To identify the relationship between head posture and occlusal contact area, subjects took interocclusal record in maximal intercuspal position with three different positions(supine position (0°) / inclined position (45°) / upright position (90°)) on the dental unit chair. Occlusal contact area was analyzed using photo occlusion analysis. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS ver.25.0 at 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: Head posture has no significant effect on the changes of occlusal contact area (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: When interocclusal relation is stable, head posture does not change a interocclusal record because head posture has no significant effect on occlusal contact area. Analysis of occlusal contact area using photo occlsion analysis device is useful due to its material property and simplicity.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#The objective of this study was to compare the early clinical effects of zirconia all⁃ceramic crowns using two different impression methods. Zirconia ceramic crowns were produced using digital models based on either a silicone rubber impression perfusion model in vitro or a 3D mouth scanner.@*Methods @#A total of 50 patients with a planned restoration of the first permanent molar with zirconia all⁃ceramic crowns after root canal therapy were se⁃ lected and randomly divided into two groups: a digital impression by intraoral 3D scanning group and a digital impres⁃ sion by extraoral scanning after silicone rubber impression group. Zirconia all⁃ceramic crowns were created by CAD/ CAM in both groups. Marginal adaptation, proximal contact, and occlusal contact were compared between groups. @*Results@#There was no significant difference between the two groups in marginal adaptation (P > 0.05). For proximal con⁃ tact and occlusal contact, no significant differences regarding the number of cases for the criteria of level A and level B were found between two groups (P > 0.05), while the misfit value in level B was smaller in the first group than in the second group (P < 0.05). @*Conclusion@#Zirconia all⁃ceramic crowns with intraoral 3D scanning show excellent early clinical performance.

ABSTRACT

Inter-dental arch discrepancy between maxilla and mandible could cause three dimensional occlusal problems, and collapse of occlusal plane, multiple teeth loss and decrease of masticatory efficiency could be observed in patient having unstable occlusal contact. Patient showing posterior bite collapse, unstable occlusal contact and improper anterior guidance should be treated to recover stable centric occlusion, occlusal contact, and anterior guidance in conjunction between prosthodontics and orthodontic treatment. This clinical report describes the favorable results of orthodontic and prosthodontics rehabilitation of patient with above mentioned problems.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate functional changes of occlusion after orthodontic treatment by measuring the occlusal force (OcFr) and occlusal contact area (OcAr), and to compare OcFr and OcAr change according to premolar extractions. METHODS: Data were obtained from 74 patients who had finished orthodontic treatment using fixed appliance aged between 18 and 40 years. Subjects were divided into groups who had four premolars extractions or non-extraction (Male extraction-16, Male nonextraction-18, Female extraction-19, Female nonextraction-21). All subjects were asked to bite pressure-sensitive sheets into maximum intercuspation with maximum bite force, and OcFr and OcAr were evaluated by measuring the sheet with a CCD camera. Records were taken right after debonding, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after debonding. RESULTS: OcFr and OcAr increased gradually in all groups during the 1 year retention period (p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Occlusion was improved functionally throughout the 1 year retention, and premolar extraction did not induce a decline in the functional aspect of occlusion.

ABSTRACT

A non-carious cervical lesion(NCCL) is the loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction level that is unrelated to dental caries. This study was to evaluate the occlusal and periodontal status of teeth with non-carious cervical lesions. We evaluated 105 teeth with non-carious cervical lesions in 35 subjects aged 38-75 years and characterized them based on the shape and dimension, plaque retention, bleeding on probing(BOP), probing pocket depth(PPD), occlusal status, brushing type, hypersensitivity and wear facet. The results of this study were as follows 1. No significant association was observed between cervical lesions and occlusal contact in lateral excursions. 2. No significant difference occurred in plaque retention, PPD, BOP between teeth with and without cervical lesions. 3. Test teeth had a significantly higher percentage of hypersensitivity and occlusal wear facet than teeth without cervical lesions. 4. Wedge shaped lesions had a significantly higher percentage of plaque than saucer shaped lesions. 5. Teeth with plaque were found to have significantly deeper PPD than teeth without plaque retention in cervical regions. 6. Teeth with occlusal contacts were found to have significantly deeper PPD than teeth without occlusal contacts. 7. No significant association was observed between cervical lesions and PPD independent of plaque retention and occlusal contacts Although more knowledge is necessary, our results suggest that occlusal contact and bacterial plaque may influence on periodontal tissue, but NCCL is not directly associated with periodontal health

Objective:To investigate the effects of occlusal adjustment in the treatment of TMD . Methods: 7 cases of TMD were treated by occlusal adjusment and occlusal contact points were measured with T-scan II system before and after treatment . VAS pain analysis table was used to evaluate the pain control effect of occlusal adjustment method. Results:The number of occlusal contact points increased obviously after occlusal adjustment,and distribution of contact on two sides tended to be balanced.Pain release was indicated by VAS table . Conclusion: Occlusal ajustment method is necessary for the treatment of TMD

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The goal of the present study was to investigate the relationship between occlusal function and body composition in 108 premenopausal healthy Japanese women aged 20−45 years. Methods: Pressure-sensitive sheets were used to measure occlusal function. Whole fat mass and lean mass, fat-free mass, and whole-bone mineral content were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results: After being adjusted for age and the square of height, the whole lean mass and grip strength of the large occlusal contact-area group were found to be significantly higher than those of the small occlusal area groups (p<0.05, respectively). In the 1-year follow-up study, changes in weight in the small-occlusal contact-area group and the low-occlusal force group were significantly larger than other occlusal-contact area or occlusal-force groups. The mean occlusal-contact area and occlusal force were both significantly smaller in subjects with partial dentures than in those without (p<0.05). Conclusion: Large occlusal contact-area, high occlusal force, and no dentures may be associated with some good health conditions in premenopausal Japanese women.

ABSTRACT

This study was done to identify the changes of bite force and occlusal contact between before and after stabilization splint therapy. 16 female patients, accepted for orthodontic treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Chosun University, were selected as the sample of this investigation. For comparisons, the samples of 16 were divided into just before stabilization splint, 1 month after stabilization splint, 2months after stabilization splint, and 3 months after stabilization splint and used the T-scan system to identify the bite force and occlusal contact changes for each group. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out ANOVA tests, and Turkey test using SPSS/PC(+). The results were as follows : 1. Bite force change from just before treatment to 1 month after stabilization splint therapy was statistical significantly decreased (P0.05). 3. The changes of anterior occlusal contacts showed no statistical significance regardless of the wearing periods of stabilization splint (p>0.05). 4. The changes of posterior occlusal contacts from just before treatment to 1 month after stabilization splint therapy was statistical significantly decreased (p>0.05). 5. The changes of posterior occlusal contacts during 1 to 3 months after stabilization splint therapy showed no statistical significance (p>0.05). 6. Posterior teeth rather than anterior teeth were more influenced by the changes of the number of occlusal contacts. To sum up above results, we may respect to capturing and stabilizing centric relation position just 1 month after stabilization splint therapy.
