ABSTRACT

Gas vesicles (GVs) are gas-filled protein nanostructures that can regulate the buoyancy of microorganisms such as cyanobacteria and archaea. Recent studies have shown that GVs have the potential to be used as ultrasound molecular imaging probes in disease diagnosis and treatment. However, the mechanism of the inflation and deflation of GVs remains unclear, which hampers the preservation of GVs and gas replacement. In the present study, the environmental pH value was found to be an important factor in regulating the inflation and deflation of GVs. It can not only regulate the inflation and deflation of GVs in vivo to make Microcystis sp. cells present distinct levitation state, but also regulate the inflation and deflation of purified GVs in vitro, and the regulation process is reversible. Our results may provide a technical support for the large-scale production and preservation of biosynthetic ultrasound molecular imaging probes, especially for gas replacement to meet different diagnostic and therapeutic needs, and would facilitate the application of biosynthetic ultrasound molecular imaging probes.

ABSTRACT

@#The application of tooth whitening technology in oral clinical diagnosis and treatment is becoming increasing widespread. Non-invasive tooth whitening based on bleaching technology has become the choice of many patients with tooth discoloration because of its unique advantage of not destroying the hard tissue of the tooth. The whitening effects differ according to the causes and degrees of tooth discoloration The effect of bleaching on tetracycline teeth is not as good as that of fluorosis teeth. The bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide bleaching agents is similar to that of urea peroxide bleaching agents with the same concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The addition of non-peroxide agents such as bromelain to peroxide bleaching agents can improve the whitening effect on teeth. The whitening effect of a high-concentration bleaching agent can be achieved by using a low-concentration bleaching agent for a prolonged the working time. The effect of pH on tooth whitening is still controversial; the combination of lasers and traditional peroxide bleaching agents can effectively improve the whitening effect of teeth. The combination of enamel micro-grinding and peroxide tooth bleaching agents can improve the whitening effect in cases of dental fluorosis. This review analyzes the causes of tooth staining, the properties of bleaching agents, the application of laser microgrinding and the changes in tooth tissue after bleaching to discuss the influencing factors of the non-invasive tooth whitening effect mainly based on bleaching techniques.

ABSTRACT

At present, there are many monitoring devices for vital signs parameters for clinical selection, but urine monitoring has not received enough attention. The traditional manual visual measurement, intermittent measurement of urine pH value, and other methods are still in use, so the authors designed a multifunctional urine bag. The urine bag can set up an alarm system per unit time according to patient′s age and condition as well as set up urine pH value detection area in hard plastic measuring bottle. This device can not only accurately monitor urine volume per unit time, but also hopefully realize the alarm automation of abnormal urine volume per unit time, as well as real-time dynamic monitoring of urine pH value. It is helpful for medical staff to make accurate judgment on patients′ condition changes, to guide the formulation and modification of clinical treatment plans, and to reduce the workload of clinical nursing staff to a certain extent.

ABSTRACT

For the discussion of the source, preparation and quality problems of Indigo Naturalis, the historical tradition and reality were summarized by literature survey and producing area investigation. Besides some quality problems, potential safety hazards were found out in some samples from market tested. Because lime could not be dislodged enough from Indigo Naturalis in the process of purification, the samples of Indigo Naturalis contained too much lime and showed strong alkalinity. It was suggested that the quality standard of Indigo Naturalis should be revised and revised and some detection projects and methods should be added into the standard. In addition, we suggested that the production access of Indigo Naturalis should be further defined.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of enteral nutrition (EN) start time on pH value of gastric juice and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in critically ill patients with invasive mechanical ventilation, so as to provide reference for the rational selection of EN timing. Methods Patients with mechanical ventilation who underwent EN treatment admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 1st, 2016 to November 30th, 2017 were enrolled, and the inclusion criteria were age ≥ 18 years, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (APACHEⅡ) ≤ 15, and nutritional risk screening (NRS 2002) ≥ 3. Patients were divided into two groups according to the start time of EN: early EN group (implementation of EN within 48 hours after mechanical ventilation) and late EN group (implementation of EN after 48 hours after mechanical ventilation). The pH value of gastric juice, VAP incidence, mechanical ventilation time, and the length of ICU stay were compared between the two groups. Results A total of 108 patients were included, 54 in the early EN group and 54 in the late EN group respectively. The pH value of gastric juice in early EN group was lower than that in late EN group [4.8 (3.8, 5.8) vs. 5.6 (4.6, 6.6),P < 0.01]. There were 8 patients with VAP in the early EN group, 3 of whom were early onset VAP. There were 17 patients with VAP in the late EN group, 10 of whom were early onset VAP. The incidence of VAP and the incidence of premature VAP in the early EN group were significantly lower than those in the late EN group (14.8% vs. 31.5%, 5.6% vs. 18.5%, bothP < 0.05). The mechanical ventilation time [days: 7.5 (5.7, 9.0) vs. 8.6 (6.8, 10.7) and the length of ICU stay [days: 10.0 (8.5, 11.7) vs. 11.0 (9.5, 12.6)] in the early EN group were significantly shorter than those in the late EN group (allP < 0.05).Conclusion At the same time of protecting gastric mucosa, early EN is helpful to reduce the incidence of VAP, reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of ICU stay, and improve the prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Spectrophotometric seawater pH measurement system is an urgent need of device due to its quick speed and high precision. Based on spectrophotometric method and flow injection analysis technique, an automated system for pH measurement of seawater was developed by integrating pump and valve flow path, LED light source, flow cell and spectrophotometer. This measurement system effectively avoided bubbles. The indicator of concentration gradient in the seawater sample was used to correct for the pH perturbation caused by the indicator, thus the operation of system was simple and convenient. with this system, only 1. 5 min was needed for a sample measurement with a precision of 0. 0013 pH units and an offset of 0. 0059 pH units. This system could be used for the rapid determination of pH of seawater collected by laboratory or research ship with high precision pH values.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEThis study investigated the shear bond strength and the ability of resin adhesive containing different amounts of bioactive glass (BG) to prevent dentin demineralization.

METHODSBG bonds at 30%, 40%, and 50% concentrations comprised a mixture of coupling agents modifying BG and Single Bond 2. Forty permanent premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment were randomly divided into four groups, namely, control group (BG-free), 30% BG group, 40% BG group, and 50% BG group. Composite resin and dentin were prepared into bonding specimens by using respective adhesives and then immersed in artificial saliva at pH 4 for 1 week. Changes in the pH values of the solution were measured every 24 h. The microtensile bond strength (TBS) of each specimen was examined after immersion in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h.

RESULTSThe TBS values of the control group, 30% BG group, 40% BG group, and 50% BG group were (27.76±0.29), (27.05±0.58), (26.95±0.69), and (25.12±0.24) MPa, respectively. The TBS of the control group was not significantly different from that of the 30% BG group (P=0.06) but significantly higher than that of the 40% BG and 50% BG groups (P=0.04 and P=0.00, respectively). In addition, TBS was significantly higher in the 30% BG and 40% BG groups than in the 50% BG group (P=
0.00 and P=0.00, respectively). The pH values of the solution increased with increasing BG content.

CONCLUSIONSBG bonds are useful in the prevention of dentin demineralization. However, in this study, the 30% BG group did not affect the short-term bond strength. The 50% BG group displayed the optimum ability to inhibit demineralization but showed the worst bond strength.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore sex differences of salivary α-amylase activity (sAA), flow rate, pH value and correlation between sAA activity and flow rate. Methods Saliva samples were collected from 105 healthy volunteers before and after citric acid stimulation. Salivary sAA activity, flow rate and pH value were determined for each samples, and the correlation between sAA activity and flow rate was analyzed. The sex differences of the indices mentioned above were analyzed. Results Citric acid stimulation significantly increased salivary sAA activity, flow rate and pH value, with flow rate undergoing the greatest increase (P <0.01). No significant sex differences in sAA activity, flow rate or pH value were found at baseline, stimulation or acute responses (delta value) to citric acid stimulation. For female subjects, significant positive correlations were found between sAA activity and flow rate in unstimulated and stimulated saliva, between sAA activity delta value and flow rate delta value (P <0.05), and their coefficients kept relatively stable. For male subjects, significantly positive correlation was only found between stimulated sAA activity and flow rate (P <0.01). Conclusion Our study indicates that no sex difference in the sAA activity, flow rate or pH value at basal and acute responses to citric acid stimulation. However, certain sex difference is indicated in correlation between sAA activity and flow rate.

ABSTRACT

In order to identify the germination behavior of Marsdenia tenacissima seeds. We studied on ground substance, soaking time, temperature, illumination, and pH value, which have the effects on the germination of M. tenacissima seeds. The results showed that M. tenacissima seeds can germinate in different ground substances especially in sandy soil, the effect of soaking time on the seed germination of M. tenacissima is not significant, the seeds could germinate well during 25-30℃. Based on these appropriate conditions, the effect of illumination is not significant but the illumination should be the key factor under inappropriate temperature. The effect of acidic soil is lighter than that of alkaline soil. The optimal germination condition of M. tenacissima seeds is 24 h of soaking at the temperature of 30℃ with sandy soil by which pH value is 7.0-7.5 under illumination.
